Here are my starters heading into the preseason:

QB Mo McNally
RB Ty Durham
FB Ralph Malone
TE Vince Lake
WR Vinny Short
WR Van Buktus
LT Adam Meadows
LG Matthew Campbell
C Frank Guinn
RG Jonathan Shea
RT Bo Schulz

K Chuck Schultz
P Heath Lindley
KR Jesse Bates

DE Vincent Drexler
DT Amos Winslett
DT Richard Tomczak
DE Mike Rucker
LB Calvin Sandberg
LB Brock Brock
LB Wali Rainer
CB Juan Gilbertson
CB Johnnie Benton
FS Ronnie Wilkins
SS Jeff McCormick

Quite a few changes for 2008. First, Ty Durham will get the start, but expect Biakabutuka to continue to run the ball often. I will use a trio of WRs consisting of Short, Hayes, and newcomer Van Buktus. Chuck Schultz will handle the place kicking.

The right side of the offensive line is new with T Bo Schulz and G Jonathan Shea getting the calls there. On defense, we welcome Vincent Drexler and Richard Tomczak to the starting defensive line. Finally, Juan Gilbertson replaces Shannon Layton at CB.

I am not sure if the team is any better than last year's unit, but we did get younger.

The Panthers flew through preseason at 3-1. The defense gave up 30 points in the four games and put together two shutouts. Granted, it is preseason, but that says something about the depth of this defensive unit.

In other news, Tim Biakabutuka reclaimed his starting spot with a great showing in the final two games.

The Panthers open up the season with a big 30-7 win over the Lions. We rack up over 500 yards of offense while Mo McNally gets the game ball. Biakabutuka gains 127 yards and scores twice, but is out done by McNally's 22-34-0-300 2 TD performance. Mo follows up that performance with a 22-39-0-269 3 TD outing in a 38-14 rout of the Steelers, led by Jeff Blake.

The defense comes up big in week three, picking off three passes in a 16-14 win over Atlanta. McNally claims his third straight games ball and has six TDs to no INTs through three games. We head into our bye week 3-0 and pumped.

After a 31-13 thrashing of the Jaguars, we face fellow 4-0 New Orleans for an early lead in the NFC West. The Saints get a couple of FGs early and a 4th quarter TD to lead 13-0 with less than 2:00 remaining. McNally hits Short for a 24 yard TD, but we cannot convert the onside kick and we lose our first game, 13-7. McNally was picked for the first time this season in the loss.

We run into injury trouble for the first time in week 7. C Guinn goes down with a broken hand and won't be back for a couple of months. Return specialist, Jesse Bates, comes up with a hip pointer and will miss the rest of the regular season. The injury to Bates opens the door to Rico Bolduc, who has not played since 2006 when he messed up his back pretty good.

We reach the halfway mark at 6-2 and tied with New Orleans for the NFC West lead. Biakabutuka is on pace for 1150+ yards and 14 TDs in a year where he had to beat out younger RB to retain his starting spot.

After a 42-24 win against Dallas, we visit the Meadowlands to take on the 7-2 Giants. The Giants, down 42-28, score twice in the final two minutes to force overtime. The Panthers win the toss and put together a nice five minute scoring drive that resulted in a McNally TD pass to Buktus. Biakabutuka claims the game ball with 186 yards and a pair of scores. Giant QB Zack Kemp had a huge day, throwing for 404 yards and 5 scores.

A 17-9 setback at San Francisco evens us back up with the Saints. We visit New Orleans in the final week, which could very well decide the division and a 1st round bye. Should be interesting.

More injuries. T Adam Meadows, my staple at LT, goes down with four broken ribs. He'll miss the rest of the season - a big blow to the team. WR Rico Boldus, in his sixth game since his back injury 2006, dislocates an elbow. His career is likely over, at least with the Panthers. His ratings have diminished. I sign WR Ryan Couch and T Ryan Mueller to take their roster spots.

The Panthers limp to two wins in their next three games, setting up a matchup of 11-4 teams to settle the division. The winner will also have home field advantage throughout the playoffs. A huge game.

Chuck Schultz got us on the board first, connecting on a 33 yd FG on the opening drive. Following a three and out, the Panther offense went back to work. McNally completed 5 of 6 passes to four different receivers, as we spread the field and drive to a quick 16 yard score. On the ensuing kickoff, Ryan Couch forced a fumble and the Panthers fell on it to regain possession. Five plays later found McNally throwing an 11 yard TD pass to Van Buktus. We lead 17-0 and we're not out of the 1st quarter yet!

After another three and out, the Panthers put together a 16 play drive, featuring Biakabutuka. The drive resulted in a 33 yard FG and a 20-0 lead with 7:58 left in the first half. New Orleans QB Charlie Batch is picked on their next possesion by Ronnie Wilkins. The Panthers capitalize with another TD pass to Van Buktus and this game is all but over, 27-0. New Orleans is able to tack on a FG before halftime for a 27-3 score. We coast through the second half, relying on the defense in a 34-3 rout. The win secures us a first round bye and gives us our first division championship since 2003 and third overall.

The Saints, however, defeat the Rams 35-23 in the Wild Card round to force a rematch with the Panthers. How sweet it is! After embarrassing them at their house, they get to come to ours for a chance at revenge.

The rematch begins with the Saints receiving the opening kickoff. They convert many 3rd downs in route to a 42 yard FG. Saints 3, Panthers 0. McNally puts the ball in the air on our opening drive, leading us to the Saints 8 yd line. But, two dropped passes in the end zone forces us to settle for a 25 yd FG. Panthers 3, Saints 3. The teams exchange punts, but the Saints win the field positions battle and gain another 38 yd FG. Saints 6, Panthers 3. The defenses took over on the second half as the teams exchanged punts a few times. The Panthers, however, intercepted a pass in New Orleans territory with 1:11 left in the half. The return took the Panthers to the NO25. The Panthers capitalize with a 24 yd FG, evening the score at six going into halftime.

The third quarter becomes another field position battle that the Panthers win as Chuck Schultz comes through on a 33 yd FG. The Saints redzone defense has held the Panthers to three FGs in three trips. Not bad. After another Saints punt, the Panthers drive to the NO33, where Schultz nails a 50 yard FG. Panthers 12, Saints 6. Time for the defense to come up with a big play - put the nail in the coffin. Another Saints punt turns into another Schultz FG to stretch the lead to 15-6 with 8:36 left to play. Then with 2:33 to play, the defense come through. Denson sacks Batch(again) and Charlie coughs the ball up. DE Jay Oster fall on it, giving the Panthers possession at the NO39. It's all but over. After a Panther punt, the defense does it again. This time it is Brett Price. He intercepts his second pass and returns it to the Saints 23. We go for the jugular as McNally find Short for an 8 yd TD. Panthers 22, Saints 6. A Saints unecessary roughness penalty ends the game.

The Cardinals, led by QB Jake Plummer and RB Lonnie Stewart, are up next.

After a quick Cardinal punt, McNally goes to work. He finds Hayes and Short for 26 yards each and lets Ty Durham run it in from 17 yds out. Panthers 7, Cards 0. The Cards go for it on 4th-and-2 on their next drive. Borck and Sandberg combine to stuff Stewart at the line, giving the Panther possession at the ARI38. The Panthers take advantage as Biakabutuka scores from 3 yds out to give the Panthers a 14-0 lead. Carolina gets the ball back following a punt and drive right down field with a mixture of pass and run. Hayes scores on a 1 yd TD pass for a 21-0 lead.

Arizona is able to counter with a Frank Sanders two yard TD reception, but the Panthers answer with a 33 yd FG helped out by a 49 yd pass from McNally to Vinny Short. Panthers 24, Cards 7. After another Cardinal punt, McNally and Buktus hook up on multiple occasions that results in a 29 yd TD pass between the two. 31-7, game over before halftime. For good measure, Wilkins picks off a Plummer pass and the Panthers turn that into an 18 yd Biakabutuka TD stretching the lead to 38-7 at halftime.

I may have spoken too soon. The Cards put together a run highlighted by three Plummer TD passes to Terry Hardy and Frank Sanders(2). All of a sudden it's 38-33 with 13:54 yet to play. The Panther settle down and put together a scoring drive that ends with a TD pass to Vinny Short. The defense then puts it away when Mike Rucker picks up a Jake Plummer fumble and returns it 14 yards for a score. The final: 52-33. Vinny Short gets the game ball for 193 yards receiving. It's on to Super Bowl IX. They will face the Colts, who downed the Browns 24-10 to advance. QB Peyton Manning and RB Courtney Farley lead the Colts.

The first quarter is a defensive battle with Panthers scoring the only points via a FG. The Colts, however, answer with a TD early in the 2nd. Farley scored on a 2 yd run. On the half's last possession, the Panthers connect on a 33 yd FG on a drive highlighted by a 43 yd bomb from McNally to Buktus. What an addition this receiver has been.

The Colts begin 2nd half scoring with a 31 yd FG extending their lead to 10-6. The Panthers answer on their next possession as McNally throws for passes of 45, 12, and 7, finding Short for the TD. The Panthers take their first lead at 13-10.

In the 4th, both team exchange punts. The Panthers get something going and McNally find Buktus on a 6 yd scoring strike. The Panther lead is now 10. Three offensive holding penalties killed the Colts final threat as the Panthers walk off the field 20-10 victors! McNally claims MVP honors with a 19-28-1-281 2 TD performance.

After a nine year career and helping the Carolina Panthers to two Super Bowl Championships, RB Tim Biakabutuka retires from the game. Over the course of his career, Tim missed just two games due to injury. His 11,082 yards and 90 rushing TDs are, by far, the highest total of any Panther. He also caught 147 balls for another 945 yards and six TDs. He eclipsed 1000 yards in every season but two and topped out at 1501 yards in 2006. On three occasions, Biakabutuka totaled 14 TDs in a season. The only disappointment, I feel, is that the man was never named to an All-Pro team. What an injustice to my 2001 Super Bowl MVP. He will be missed and tough to replace.

Coach Ike Turnbull decided to lead the Panthers to a Super Bowl Championship at just the right time. His contract expired at the end of last season. I award him by offering him a 4 year contract worth 3.5 mil a year - an increase of 200K per year.
He accepts immediately.

The league is also welcoming two expansion team into the league. As you can see, the franchise have followed the trend that the MLS has set in naming their franchises:

the Austin Bush(NFC West)
the Iowa City Caucus(AFC East)

A rather political flair, I might add....

Anyway, I have to expose a few players. Here is my list:

QB Toby Rexin
RB Jeremy Emerson
WR Rico Bolduc
P Heath Lindley
DT Marco Nowlin

I lost Jeremy Emerson in the 4th round to the Austin Bush. As I had expected, Emerson is the only player selected by either expansion team.

I receive a number of trade offers following the draft, all for veterans. None of them catch my eye and I pass on each and every one.

Here is my free agent situation:

Unrestricted
LB Wali Rainer
K Chuck Schultz
TE Max Gibson
T Ryan Mueller

Restricted
G Jonathan Shea
T Myron Bronson
DE Danny Torres
WR Ryan Couch

I slapped the franchise tag on Wali Rainer before the expansion draft, so I don't need to worry about competition with him. But, I only have 11 mil under the cap to work with. I would like to resing the kicker and Jonathan Shea. I won't be very active this offseason.

For shits and giggles, I put in a modest offer for P Jake Graveson. He is the real deal at this position. I have never had a stud punter before. He signs with nearly no hesitation! I sit idle as TE Max Gibson is snatched up by the Eagles, but I manage to resign K Chuck Smith. T Ryan Mueller is grabbed up by St. Louis for over 14 mil for three years.

For the first time in franchise history, the Panther decide to wheel and deal on draft day. In an effort to reduce my cap cost, I trade down from my 34th overall pick by trading it along with P heath Lindley, DT Richard Tomczak, and QB Toby Rexin to the Iowa City Caucus for their 2nd, 3rd, and 4th picks in the draft. Their 2nd round pick is the 36th overall, so I only drop two spots there. The real key to this deal is Tomczak, an up and coming defensive tackle who could be a solid starter for the caucus from day one. They also get Rexin, a 2nd year QB that could develop into a starter. Lindley was jsut a sweetner that sealed the deal. Hopefully, I can turn those extra picks into quality spot starters and backups.

Draft Results
RB Matthew Shew, Michigan Tech (48/61)
DT Earl Osborne, Cincinnati (33/73)
WR Bart Murphy, Mississippi St. (46/60)
S Rod Monaco, Navy (32/49)
TE Lewis Myers, Kentucky (43/66)
T Mario Wiggins, Duke (11/44)
FB Dustin Freeman, Lafayette (35/51)
DE Bryant Shea, Kansas (18/32)
QB Lonnie Rogers, Kansas St. (24/55)
RB Vincent "the Unabomber" Kaczynski, Duke (32/36)

The biggest catch is RB Shea, who will join my young crop of running backs. Also, expect "big" things from "the Unabomber" Kacynski.

Following camp, I released the following players to "cut some fat":

DE Casey Waddell
WR Rico Bolduc
FB Kendrick Oreck

With the emegence of Wally Reichard at guard this past training camp, I find my 3 mil free agent, Tyrone Sellars useless. I offer him, along with a 4th round pick, to Miami for their 2nd round pick in next year's draft.

Here are my starting lineups for the 2009 campaign, heading into presason.

QB Mo McNally
RB Ty Durham
FB Ralph Malone
TE Vince Lake
WR Van Buktus
WR Vinny Short
LT Adam Meadows
LG Wally Reichard
C Frank Guinn
RG Matthew Campbell
RT Bo Schulz

K Chuck Schultz
P Jake Graveson
KR Jesse Bates

DE Mike Rucker
DT Amos Winslett
DT Jack Collier
DE Vincent Drexler
LB Calvin Sandberg
LB Brock Brock
LB Wali Rainer
CB Juan Gilbertson
CB Johnnie Benton
FS Ronnnie Wilkins
SS Jeff McCormick

With only four changes in the starting lineups, I expect to defend my title well. The most obvious change, of course, is at RB. Ty Durham wil get the call right now, but the job is up for grabs in the preseason. Expect the rookie Matthew Shea to get a real close look.

I'm reading too, and my Panthers just won the 2009 Super Bowl.

Too bad that will never happen in Charlotte.

After the team's preseason rushing performance, you may see the Panthers air it out a bit more this season. No RB stood out as Durham will retain the starting spot by default. The Unabomber will move up to the 2nd spot and Shea will be the third down back. Expect the carries to be distributed amongst the three over the course of the seaosn.

Wild Card vs New Orleans(W17-10, 14-3)
Divisional Playoff at Dallas

We start the season off with a 23-17 OT win over Kansas City. Our offense struggles in the first four weeks, but our defense leads us to a 3-1 record. Matthew Shea has been promoted to starting QB as Ty Durham has gotten hurt and the "Unabomber" has been sporadic. McNally went down in week 4, but Randall Bright stepped in and guided the Panthers to 3 wins to improve the team to 6-1 going into the bye week.

We lose Amos Winslett until the playoffs as he goes down with a dislocated knee in week 9. The Panthers beat Seattle 23-20, however, to improve to 7-1 on the year. A couple more wins sends us to 9-1 with a three game cushion in the once feared NFC West. The Saints and Rams are tied at 6-4, while the Falcons settle for a 5-5 record. The 49ers bring up the rear at 1-9 while the Austin Bush are 3-7.

We clicnh the division after week 15 win over the Saints, 37-35. It seems like just yesterday that the Saints had our number and we could never beat them. I believe we have on four of our last five meetings with this club. We need one more win to clinch home field throughout the playoffs and a 1st round bye. This season has seen a plethora of great records:

AFC
Colts 12-2
Browns 11-3
Chargers 11-3
Bengals 10-4

NFC
Panthers 12-2
Cowboys 11-3
Bears 11-3

We experience one of the biggest losses in franchise history as the Bears run up 51 points in a 51-21 win. That moves the three division champ all to 12-3 records, forcing me to play all of my starters in week 17.

We win our finale, but still get edges out of the first round bye with a 13-3 record. Unreal. We will have to take the long way through the playoffs, beginning with a home game against the Saints.

The Saints get on the board first with a late first quarter field goal. The Panthers miss one of their own early in the second. The Panthers picked off Batch in the endzone of the next possession, but failed to do anything with it. After a Saints punt, McNally finds reserve TE Thomason for a 3 yd score to give the Panthers a 7-3 lead, which end the first half scoring.

On the Panthers' first drive of the second half, they put together a long, sustained drive that results in a Schultz 31 yd FG pushing the Panther lead to seven at 10-3. We put together another decent drive, but Schultz misses a 44 yd FG. Is this another case of John Kasay syndrome. Neither team can do anything for the remainder of the 3rd quarter and the Panthers receive a punt to start the 4th.

Following a Panther punt, the Saints drive right down the field to set up a 1st-and-goal. On the next play, Johnnie Benton steps in front of a Charlie Batch pass and downs it in the endzone for a touchback. Huge play with 8:14 remaining. The play sparks the offense, as the Panthers march right down the field on a mixture of pass and run, capping the drive with a Shea 6 yd TD scamper. The score all but ends this game with 2:17 reamining. The Saints score once to make things interesting, but cannot convert the onside kick and the Panthers run the clock out on a 17-10 win. Shea earns game MVP honors, but my personal game ball goes to Johnnie Benton for his crucial interception.

Dallas is next up. QB Chad Pennington and Ethan Evison lead the Cowboys, who won the NFC East with a 13-3 mark. On the opening drive, the Cowboys march right through my defense down to the eight yard line. Our defense stands tough in the redzone and the 'Boys can only muster a 24 yd Mike Vanderjagt FG. The drive takes up more than 6:30, though. The Panthers counter with a long drive of their own, resulting in a 45 yd Chuck Schultz FG. After two possessions, there is only :59 left in the 1st quarter.

After a Cowboy punt, the Panthers take it down to the DAL28 again and settle for another 45 yd FG Schultz FG. The Cowboys answer on their next possession with their own 45 yd FG, tying the game at six. The PAnthers get the ball back with :34 seconds left in the half and manage to get 24 yards on the first pass play. Another 12 yards gets them to the DAL40 with :02 left. They line up for a 57 yd FG and Schultz barely nudges it through, giving the Panthers a 9-6 lead at the half. This could be huge.

The Panthers open up the second half with a punt and the Cowboys march down the field to score on a 7 yd TD pass, taking the lead at 13-9. The Cowboys turn another Panther punt into a touchdown, this time on a 34 yd run. They now lead 20-9 heading into the 4th. We need to get our offense going now. A missed Carolina FG complicates things with 7:14 left. The Cowboys take advantage and put me away with another TD to go up 27-9. We nee a miracle at this point. An interception ends all Carolina hope as Dallas milks the clcok out for a 27-9 victory.

Dallas goes on to face the Chargers in Super Bowl X. San Diego led the NFL with 453 points this season and are the favorite to win. Dallas stuns them, 28-24, to win the championship. Chad Pennington claims MVP honors with c couple of TD passes.

Season Stats:
QB Mo McNally 256-434-13-3497 21 TDs 88.4 rtg
QB Randall Bright 81-127-3-1052 7 TDs 98.2 rtg
RB Matthew Shea 170-839 10 TDs
WR Van Butkus 93-1589 9 TDs

Sandberg probably had the best year of any linebacker in my organization. He led the team in tackles with 102, added 25 assists, and had 8.5 sacks, which also led the team. He also contributed 3 QB hurries, a 16.8 tackle percentage, and 2 interceptions. Lastly, he led the team in passes defensed with 12.
