Homicide: Life on the Street
As a huge fan of The Wire and the Corner miniseries I have been meaning to watch Homicide for the longest time but I didn't want to spend a ton of money. Then a few weeks ago on Amazon I saw the entire series for 65 bucks so I decided to take the plunge.
Just about done with season one and it is utterly fascinating, even moreso when you consider it started in the early 90's on NBC. Any other fans on here and should I expect it to be as good as it is for most of its run? |

Good to hear. I know so far the first season is based entirely off of the Homicide Book (which I loved) but it's actually made it more enjoyable. Andre Brougher is a bad ass in this. |

Frank Pembleton may be my all-time favorite TV character.

Detective Scrotes might have something to say about that

+1 to this, but I'd remove the "cop" qualifier. And individually Andre Braugher's work on this show is as good as I've seen anyone do on television period.

I loved Homicide when it was on, but I haven't watched it since it originally aired.

It was indeed phenomenal - when Andre Braugher leaves, stop watching as it goes downhill *very* fast from there.

Agree its not nearly as good once Braugher leaves, but luckily that's only the last season. There are some great characters in that show - Pembleton, Howard, Lewis and Kellerman are some of my favorites. It's easily one of my favorite shows ever.
Also, if it didn't come with the set, make sure you watch Homicide:The Movie after finishing the series, it ties a lot of things up. |

The one episode I really remember is the guy and subway train "accident". That was a really powerful episode for me. Some time after that episode, I was watching HBO (I think) taxi-cab confessions and there was a cop that said those accidents happen. Ever since then, I stand back from the edge. |

Definitely one of my all-time favorites.
The episode in the first season that is solely them interrogating a suspect is probably my single favorite episode of a TV show. It is perfect. |

How does this thread get to post 17 without a mention of Luther Mahoney one of my all time favorite TV bad guys?
I've recently decided to rewatch the series as I know I didn't watch Season 1 and am pretty sure I skipped Seaon 2. I'm glad it has held up. I was going to watch this on Netflix (have the first three discs now actually), but the relatively cheap price for the set means I just purchased the whole thing. |

Homicide is one of those shows I always wanted to watch but never did.
Sounds like I'll have to Netflix it.

How does it hold up compared to the Wire? I liked the book, but I definitely would have enjoyed it more had I not already seen the The Wire. Part of that was because many of the stories were similar (The lie-detecting copy machining, for instance), while the rest of it was because David Simon had yet to research and write The Corner, and thus it didn't have both sides, as in The Wire.

Was I the only one who felt the health issues Pembleton dealt with did more harm than good for the series?
