Calling all IT gurus - puzzled

So my bosses computer had flickering monitor issues. Had a tech out to replace the motherboard yesterday (don't like to spend time on IT stuff when I could be doing other things).

IIRC I opened up the internet with the tech and it worked fine. However now every other computer on the network is online except his - I get the "network cable unplugged" bit. I've just replaced all the accessible Cat5 in the office (the stuff we had was janky and caused issues anyways) so it can't be bad cable (unless I happed to buy bad cable from Staples). It also can't be the jack - it's plugged into the same jack as the server (server is on outlet #10 and his is #11 - i swapped the two and the server still works and his doesn't).

Am I missing something?

it's not the cable - i just tried swapping it with known-good cable from before the replacement (replaced it anyways)

Edit: misread.

You don't happen to have a spare network card you can put into his machine, do you? Could be the network port on his board (I'm assuming it's onboard ethernet) is hosed.

I assume the ethernet port is on the mobo, hence why you mentioned it? Maybe a driver needs replacing?

If he just had a new motherboard put in, seems like there's probably an issue with the network needing to be reinstalled. Might need to load drivers for the network hardware, or simply reinstall the protocols and service? That would be where I'd look.

Also check the BIOS to see if the on-board ethernet port somehow got disabled.

i've tried doing that - i uninstalled the onboard ethernet adapter on the mobo and let windows auto-detect it.

every tcp/ip setting is just set to auto on mine and works fine.

i find it really hard to believe that he had one mobo with bad video and now one with bad ethernet. it's got to just be some sort of setting

Another thought which popped up is if y'all do any kind of MAC filtering on your switches. Since it is a new mobo, the new MAC address might need to be added to the table.

I sped read this entire thread (in my head in bed) ... maybe it's something as simple as the network card being loose? I've seen that happen.

i'm going to check the security stuff - i don't think it's MAC-filtering - fact i'm sure it's not, but maybe that might be it somehow...that thought popped into my head but i dismissed it. in fact it can't be - i checked for that by cutting our server/router out of it and going direct from the ethernet card to the wall and from the other side of the wall to the fios router

i dunno...could be i suppose? but it's an onboard thing (yay for being prebuilt systems from HP), so I'm not quite as confident tugging and pushing at it - it's all just built right onto the system board i think.

yep. all built right onto the system board. i took off the side and made sure that the RAM was all seated nicely (didn't actually remove it, but made sure it was snug). i've reset the BIOS to factory-default and made sure the ethernet adapter is on...i don't know wtf else i can do.

i've swapped cables in every possible way to make sure the problem is on the computer - other computers work in that jack, other computers work with the cables i'm using for this computer...i've taken it outside of our firewall and security policies by putting it direct to the FIOS box...

If you logged into the internet once with the tech and everything worked fine, I seriously doubt it's a security setting issue. Sounds more like a hardware/network cable/network cable infrastructure (beyond the jack) issue.

Make sure the cable is plugged in securely. My work computer has a loose cat5 connection at the NIC and just bumping the damned thing can lose the connection and force me to push the cable back in snuggly.

no lights on the lan-port, either amber or green. called the HP warranty tech who was out here yesterday - he's ordering another new mobo.

course my boss is pissed "WTF WHY DOES THIS ALWAYS HAPPEN TO ME...OMGZ!!!"

upon further reflection both the tech and i agree we didn't do that.

the port is built right onto the mobo - not much of a way it can be loose. they'll be out monday to make it all better

Yep, I've seen that before.. usually happens at a site that's like 2 hours away so I have to go back out there again next day.
