Welcome to the league, Richmond Flying Squirrels!

The San Francisco Giants' AA Minor League Affiliate the Connecticut Defenders just moved to Richmond this off-season. To determine the team name, 5 suggestions were raised and then voted upon. The contenders:
  • Richmond Rockhoppers
  • Richmond Flatheads
  • Richmond Rhinos
  • Richmond Hambones
  • Richmond Flying Squirrels

I'm floored that Flying Squirrels won this vote.

Here's an article about the name vote, with a reasoning behind why each name was chosen.

Richmond manage to get someone to come to their dump of a stadium abandoned by the Braves?

Interesting.

Connecticut was supposedly the lowest drawing team in their league.

It's sad because Norwich used to be a pretty good draw back when they were a Yankees affiliate and had big names like Soriano on their way up.

Is there any way to do the mascot without aviator goggles and a blue cap?

Seems crazy that a west coast team would have an AA affiliate that far from home. Is it some sort of relic thing where they never moved the AA team west 60 years ago?
