PING: California Residents (aka Wildfires 2009)

My friend says she could see the fires in the mountains from the 110 freeway and this is the first year she's seen them that close. Pretty scary. My mom says she can smell the smoke and she lives close to Downtown L.A.

Stay safe peeps.

Northern California here....my area is pretty quiet, but CAL-FIRE (the state fire department) just phoned our department and let us know that they'll be requesting help from the north half of the state soon. In short, they expect it to get a lot worse before it gets any better.

If I hear anything more as an insider, I'll let ya'll know.

Cheers!

These things scare the shit out of me. There is no way I would live with this threat over my head on top of the earthquakes.

I heard on CNN yesterday that there were 5 folks trapped in a valley because they ignored the mandatory evacuation order. The flames were to high that they couldn't get any helicopters in to save them.

Pretty nuts.

Good luck to the folks who live out there.

.

I have no sympathy for them.

I was reading a quote from a sheriff who said when people ignore the evacuation order he asks them their next of kin and where their dental records are stored.

Hey hawk,

What is the fire situation like in NorCal? I'm heading to Jenner on Friday for the weekend, then heading to Tahoe for a few days, then Yosemite. Has it been as dry up there as it has been in SoCal?

Honestly, in my neck of the woods it is very quiet save for a few small veg fires daily. But I'm also WAY up north near the Oregon border.

Haven't heard of anything in the Yosimite area either. But, per the CAL-FIRE briefing today, new stuff is popping up all over and they're doubtful they have the resources for another large campaign fire currently.

Air quality sucks, but these fires aren't as close as the ones earlier in the year. But I'm in OC.

Been getting a ton of news coverage on the fires here, it seems like.

Glad I get to give the nervous-wreck-will-they-come-our-way part of the experience a miss now.

About 6 miles from my office. We can watch it burn. Pretty amazing stuff.

The problem with this(these) fire(s) is the lack of access and the steep terrain. They are saying that they can't get manpower to most of the fire and it's on a part of the mountain that hasn't burned since the early 90's. They don't expect containment to happen until at least next week, tuesday at the earliest. If it goes higher on the mountain, it'll take out Mount Wilson, which would be a blow to a lot of communication and media outlets

No worries out here in the Bay Area. We're pretty used to wildfire sagas, but most of us ignore it.
