Computer question- Am I passing a virus?

Some program sent this to everyone in my contacts list. It seems to just be an advertisment, but I am a little worried since I have professors, etc... in that list.

hello friend:
I am glad to tell you one good news ! i have bought one DELL laptop from one site then i got it within 4 working days and the quality is high too.i am very satisfaied with their service. there are many interesting electronic items on the site!such as Phones,TVs Laptops or Video Games or Motorbikes and so on!also the price is good enough! If you have free time you can visite the site by yourself
the website: shop-2009.com
Their Email/MSN: [email protected]

I am running ad-aware right now, any other suggestions on free programs that may get rid of this?

thanks

Yes, that's probably a virus on your box. You need a lot more than ad-aware. Get one of the free virus checkers out there. I know that slickdeals has been running specials for Kaspersky for free, and I think it's AVG that has a freeware one.

kaspersky is very good too though if you can get it for free

AVG is an ok antivirus suite. Antivir is also ok as well for free virus software.

I echo what Greg said, you have something that sent that out on your system. You are past the point of using ad-aware. You need a full blown virus lock down. I would advise if possible completely disconnect that computer from the network now entirely and use a different computer to download any anti-virus software that you want to install. (Bring it over using a thumb drive or usb drive, but remember certain viruses can transmit via those so be careful in plugging that back into your clean computer before scanning it to make sure it is clean.)

Good luck!

actually that's true - i lied. on my laptop at home now I use Antivir. I found it's less of a resource-piggy (or so it seems). But I use AVG on our work computers.

Yep, I used to have AVG on my wife's system, but now run antivir on it for that reason.

Good stuff. Definately did a lil double-take when you walked into the theater...

Oh... I hate to admit it, but I didn't realize that was you! I'm bad with remembering faces. So sorry, if I had known it was you I would have stopped and talked!

How embarassing I smiled and waved and such being nice because I figured I knew you from softball or something and just couldn't remember where. Woops!

It might just be me, but if my system emailed people like that I'd be wiping the entire machine and starting from scratch. That shit is like Herpes if you don't go scorched-earth with it.

Haha! I thought that might be the case - like I said I definately did a double-take but then I was like "yeah...that's Alan and his wife." But like I said I didn't want to interrupt your night out with your lady, and I was waiting on friends walking through the door myself. No worries! Next time I'll just smack you upside the head with a trout?

Kaspersky Anti-Virus 2009 3-User Edition Free after $50 MIR - Slickdeals.net

Kaspersky for free after rebate from Fry's.

Personally I'm using Norton 360 at home now that they seem to have fixed the system-hog aspects of Norton anti-virus.

Yeah, I don't want to get too far down the road in suggesting what antivirus to use since I try very hard to not let the company I work for cloud that judgement

That said, I hear the most recent Norton is indeed not that horrible, but I still wouldn't use it over Avast or Avira (antivir). AVG was good, but the most recent version is not that great. Kaspersky is good, but usually not enough to pay for it over avast or avira. Using the link gstelmack posted is a good deal.

Norton 360 3.0 is $30. Antivirus deals abound.
