I am having a ball!

I set up MAME on my laptop, so I have all the old games. I've had this for several years, but never enjoyed it fully due to having to use the keybaord to control it. Well, the other night I went on a mission to find out what I would do better. I bought a NES Advantage joystick & NES-to-USB converter cable.

I am kicking arse on Gyruss now!

i used to have a bunch of old nintendo roms before i guess i lost them all on an old HD.

I have 10 CDs of ROMs around here somewhere, but after the last computer upgrade I never got around to getting MAME setup....and that was like 4 years ago.

That said, I luv me some classic video games. Most of my favorites are just the ones I remember most from my youth:

Kangaroo - I think I liked this one just because it was somewhat easy.
Popeye - I enjoyed the sounds, but it was pretty tough.
Bagman - Also a little too tough for me, but I liked the concept.
Pengo - Push those iceblocks you penguin bitch!
Mr. Do and all his many rides - Mr. Do kicks so much goddamn ass. I think the Mr. Do games were the best of the 80s arcade games.
Galaga - Surprisingly entertaining for what was basically a Space Invaders clone.
Robotron - this one is still a blast with an xbox 360 controller

I wish I had the proper hardware to play Tempest, or Star Wars, or Centipede or some of the other tracball/paddle/wackyhardware games...but I think my fondness for some of those games is colored by the fact that I haven't been able to play them.

How well do the NBA Jam games run on MAME these days? When I was into MAME several years ago, NBA Jam was unplayable.

I had a a phase where I played a bunch of NES/Genesis RPGs - Sword of Vermillion, Crystalis, Final Fantasy I, Shining Force I & II, Might and Magic.

Might and Magic: Gates to the Another World for Genesis was the most confusing game I ever played. I never did finish it. I don't think I ever really understood what was going on with the elements, quests - it never seemed like I got anywhere, even though I put tons of time into it.

You guys do realise that many of these games are being re-released on various legal platforms (Live Arcade, PC CD-ROM, other casual games outlets) and people still hold the rights to them? Talking about this stuff puts FOFC at risk.

Right now though I'm playing that Final Fantasy IV "Expansion".

I have an old tube TV that I use just for my SNES, NES, Sega CD, etc.

I was just talking about this at work yesterday- I have 0 flat screen tvs as none of my 3 tvs have broken. Heck, one is back from the dorms (1997, I think), one was in exchange for 2 months of staying on a couch from a roommate since he didn't have cash, and one was of the "if you can carry it, it's yours" ilk. And none of them will die and I'm probably not getting a "modern" tv until they do...

Wow, not to threadjack or sound too pompous, but how in the hell do you watch TV/play new video games in standard def? At work all we have is a standard def TV in our crew room and I can't stand to watch TV on it b/c I'm so used to my high definition signal I get at home.

I also can't help but laugh when one of the guys brings in an XBOX 360 and they have to squint their eyes to read the on screen text on the SD TV.

I like that you are old school, but holy crap I couldn't imagine still having old school TV's after seeing the newer ones in action.

I recently hooked up my colecovision to one of my tv's. i bought a coax converter to get it to work. but alas all my controllers seem to have broken (they would only go up and left) and I had a real hard time getting it to read the cartridges. i guess the stuff just deteriorates over time. It was sad.

ps. I'm in the same boat as SI regarding old school tvs and will be until my current TV breaks.

To me, it was one of those things that's no big deal at all until I bought a HDTV myself and got used to it. Of course HD is better, but I'm quite pleased with the money I saved by being behind the curve on HD. Frugality more than old school I think.

Yeah, it's more that I'm cheap-- err.. frugal, yeah, that's it

Sports is great on HD as is some scifi stuff, but, really, I don't mind it at all.

I just picked up Rise of Nations,Rise of Nations expansion Patriots, Age of Mythology and it's expansion Titans,Kohan 2,Rise of Legends all for the cost of trading in a copy of Spore to Goovex. If you have not tried Goovex it is a great site for trading old games PC or Console as well as Dvds and would recommend it. You get get credits for trading for other games people are trading in for your traded in games. I am currently hoping to get a old coy of Age of Wonders Shadows Magic and Icewind Dale

I signed up for Goovex, but it seemed all the games I had for trade would be 50th on the list with around 1 copy being traded a month so, seemed pretty useless for what I have.

I am fairly cheap myself and just cannot justify buying one of those new fangled TV's until my current one breaks. Besides sports, i rarely watch TV. I know it would make my sports watching experience orgasmic, but I just cannot shell out that kind of money when I have a perfectly good TV right now.

Shit, you say that and suddenly I'm paranoid. My old Sony TV had coax so I could hook my Genesis etc up to it...but I just realized I dunno if my HDTV has that at all.

I might need a converter to RCA for those systems.

Looks like RF Modulators only work one way. Most recommendations I see online say you should get your hands to get an old VCR.

I've just start playing the original Fallout. Always wanted to play it, but for some reason never got around to it. Got too addicted to Fallout3 lol. I also just found Sanitarium, i remember playing this years ago. Was so creepy.
