what better? michael jackson vs prince
Reading some articles about MJ, it turns out he felt a rivalry with Prince. Whose music did you enjoy more over the years?

I think Michael has the better top hits, but Prince is the far more talented musician and song writer, with a much stronger overall body of work. So I voted Prince.

I went with Jackson. Prince has too many songs that I turn off as soon as they come on. While some of Jackson's songs I feel the same way, the list of those for me is much shorter.

Did Weird Al ever parody a Prince song? While Beat It / Eat It has to be the best song / video parody comedy ever (but only because The Saga Begins is so far off the subject from American Pie, but it's probably the best song parody ever), Prince never did anything worth parodying that I remember.

See, I can't say I "enjoy" Prince's music. Maybe he was more talented or whatever, but there's a bunch of MJ songs that when they come on, people either sing or dance to or whatever (me too). But Prince?

Prince is more of a musician and Michael Jackson was more of an entertainer. And I am not sneering at either or saying that either is/was limited to one or the other, because Prince puts on an incredible show and Michael wrote a lot of his own stuff.
"Let's Go Crazy" and "When Doves Cry" from Purple Rain are probably Prince's best known hits. They certainly stayed at #1 for the longest. For me, it is Prince in a runaway. Prince has a lot more funk in his style, especially as he matured as an artist. Michael went in the other direction. |

I also find myself squarely in Prince's corner. Don't get me wrong, Michael had MONSTER hits, and I really like his songs. But from a career perspective, Prince has shown himself time and again to be an incredible writer & performer. I was fortunate enough to see him live in the 1999 Tour (1981-1982) and he put on an unbelievably entertaining show.
Just for kicks, I just did a search, found the ASCAP website, and found out he has written 692 songs. In addition to the big hits mentioned above, he has also written a number of hits for other artists. Songs such as: Stevie Nicks "Stand Back" (1983) Chaka Khan "I Feel For You" (1984) Sheila E. "The Glamorous life" (1984) The Time "Jungle love" (1985) Bangles "Manic Monday" (1986) Sinead O'Connor "Nothing Compares 2 U" (1990) Apparently he also has hundreds of songs that still lie unreleased in his vaults (if rumors are true, Michael also has 100+ unreleased tracks). I also found a link to Rolling Stone article listing 50 Greatest Artists of All Time: Prince #28 Michael Jackson #35 Interesting question! |

I just like Prince's music better. Songs like Bambi and Little Nikki rock. Dave Grohl even covered Nikki.
I will admit that I will almost always pick someone who actually plays instruments over somebody who can just sing. |

It's so bizarre that you can't find a Prince video on Youtube with sound.
(Other than BatDance) The Kevin Smith 1/2 hour long Prince story is pretty funny if you have time to find it on Youtube and are bored enough to watch. |

Ya know, I don't really like either all that much. I can appreciate that Prince is a bit of a musical genius, and MJ has some classic songs, but out of around 50 gigs of mp3s on my PC (and the CD collection to match), I don't have a single track by either and I couldn't ever see myself changing that.
I will drunkenly sing/dance to either of them though if they come on in a bar/nightclub.
