Good thoughts please - Pet related

One of our Min Pins (Duke, that's him on the left in the racing outfit ) is very sick, in 2 days he has gone from 11.5 pounds to 8.5 and has been vomiting and unable to eat or even move more than a few steps before literally collapsing. This came out of nowhere and I thought it was just a stomach virus yesterday, but he continued to get worse.

He is at the Vets now going through a battery of tests and she was very concerned with the rapid weight loss and complete lack of energy, since Mini-Pinchers are extremely active by nature. We have three Dogs and they are like our Kids, so I am quite upset right now.

So please keep some positive thoughts/prayers on tap for my little buddy, god sometimes I hate how attached I am to my Dogs.

Thank you

I'll keep the little guy in my prayers. Pets are absolutely a part of the family.

What dog food do you use? My lab had the same issue, and after researching her dog food company (Nutro), it seems as if LOTS of dogs are getting sick after eating that dog food. Just took her off it, and she's been better since.

Thank you so much everyone.

They have been on Beneful since we got them last October. They are a year old this month, so two weeks ago per our Vet, we transitioned them to the adult version of Beneful and they had been OK.

Bob - I hope that is all it is, that would make my day for sure! The vets 2 main concerns are he swallowed something that is causing a blockage (We watch them like Hawks, but they occassionally manage to locate some none food substance to chew on) or Pancreatitis in terms of more serious issues. Thanks for the links as well.

Tests should be done this afternoon some time.

Dola - Just read Beneful has had recalls for food poisoning issues in the past and we just cracked a new bag open Saturday, I really hope this is it and I will definitely be changing brands now.

Anyone have any recommendations?

I have a HUGE soft spot not just for dogs, but Min Pins specifically (I have 3). So I feel for you and my thoughts are with you and your family.

Our dogs have a special diet because two of them have an allergy, but we've been very successful with Wellness [WELLNESS® - Healthy Dog and Cat Food (White Fish and Sweet Potato specifically). Even the dog without allergies eats it and have been on it for years and are very healthy - and have stayed at a good weight despite the tendency for Min Pins to get overweight.

It can be tough being attached to pets, but that's what makes them so important to us. Best wishes for your little guy's tests today.

I bought a bag of Nutro and my cats HATE it.... no adverse affects, just real unhappy about it... I guess I wouldn't be happy if I was fed generic food either!

I hope whatever your problem is gets sorted out! and the little guy returns to health!

My dog had a similar issue and it turned out to be an infection. He got on antibiotics back then and was better in a day or two. Hope it's something as simple as that.

OK, just got the call from the Vets, it was the receptionist and she said the Doctor would talk to me when I got there, but that it was nothing major/life threatening. I am totally relieved right now.

Thanks for the positive thoughts everyone!!!

Wade thanks for your suggestion on the food. I found a place in my city that sells it and will be stopping on the way to the Vets.

Got big Duke home, he has a parasitic intestinal infection called Giardia. If left untreated it can erode the intestinal lining and cause internal bleeding and potentially lead to very serious infections. Luckily it was caught early, so he will make a full recovery and actually showed a little spunk when he got home after getting an IV and rehydrated while at the Vet.

The funny part is I was always one to over react when my Kids were Babies\Toddlers and got sick. I did the same thing today with this damn Dog, all worried and emotional hoping he would be OK, now I want to boot him for worrying me

Very thankful it turned out well and thanks to all the great Animal lovers at FOFC one more time.

Good news!

Standing water, puddles, etc can carry Giardia.....a friend's dog has had it a couple of times with no long-term effects.

That's awesome news! He deserves some treats for being poked and proded all day by the vets.

A little OT, but man, if I knew anyone starting college I'd suggest veterinary.

Giardia sounds like a sexy Italian lady, not an infection. Tell the vet that if there's a sexy Italian lady inside your dog, that lady is, by all rights, yours and you want her back.

Glad the pooch is gonna be OK!

LOL, if she is there I'm not checking

And Path, you are right.....We even have insurance on the Dogs and it was still over $500 when all was said and done. Not bitching about paying it, cause my furry Kids are priceless, but it does pay well.

Yep. Ms.path was surfing the net and discovered that three-year old Norm is dying from congenital heart disease because he's started to get tired after sprinting.

$410.00 of dog checkup later verified that there is not a thing wrong with him. Ms.path is now barred from internet dog diagnosis.
