They did this for a while but I think there were complaints that new users were being missed (in the mass amounts of spammer accounts that were tryin gto be created).. so kind of a damn if you do, damn if you don't situation.

I'm just concern because a spammer could post what could be an innocent title (EA Sports new game or whatever), but post something that is NSFW.

Isn't there a way to restrict http links till you have a certain amount of posts.

I'm not that familiar with vbulletin so don't know if it has that ability or if you need to add mods to do that.

Whatever you do, don't accidentally click on allowing popups from here. I had about a billion voices all come in and blow me away. Scarry.

I think ideally we need to find a system that does not allow spambots to register for the site in the first place.

I think you can limit bbcode and html on a group basis. So you could do like 5 posts or something.

But captcha is the way to go. Works on a sites I use it.

We may need to upgrade the board software to take advantage of some of the better antispam hacks as most of them are for versions 3.7 or 3.8.

I think the latest versions of the software also have a slightly different signup procedure.

I wonder how many times we have to complain to get that sort of stuff fixed/changed?

Exactly!

Don't get me wrong, I understand that they get revenue from these ads, but, can they please NOT use ads with sound? Even then, I'm not clicking on it anyway, so they are wasting their time.

Just in case this turns into a "things about the board we could improve" thread...another board I'm on has the ability for the user to click on an arrow and instead of being taken to the first new post since you last logged on, you'll go to the first post in the thread which you haven't read (which could go back days/months). So if I hit the board at 8 in the morning, read through the new posts in the NHL playoff thread, and then forget to click the thread again all day...when I log on at 10 pm and click the arrow, I won't just be getting posts from the last time I logged in around 5 pm, but I'll be able to read everything that has been posted since I was last in the thread at 8 am.

I think it would be a welcome addition especially for those busier days.

More hard liquor advertising (a-la Hulu) less spammertizing (weight, teeth, and dating).

If I mention Firefox + Adblock here, do I get the free beer?

He hates this country, yes, but most spammers are offshore so he doesn't care about them as much.

Even though Adblock is out there and works just fine to get rid of the annoying ads, it is still annoying that we even have to resort to that, just to not be bombarded by a random talking voice when we come to the page.

I would recommend using noscript for protecting you against harmful website attacks various places you go instead of adblock. It has a side effect of blocking the ads you find annoying, but helps you practice safe computing too at the same time.

I forget, since I haven't used nosript for a couple years. Won't it (like AdBlock) block basically all the ads for sites? Which in turn takes away the main and sometimes only revenue for many of the websites we visit?

That's one of the reasons I've gone away from blocking ads, it's easy enough for me to ignore them so I didn't need something blocking them for me any more.

It depends on how the advertising revenue is set up. Many sites get revenue based on "click throughs" which depend on an end user not only seeing the ad but also clicking on it to go to the advertiser's site before any revenue is given for that viewing. In those cases, if you wern't going to click on the ad anyways, by simply choosing to not view it you aren't decreasing the revenue.

Other ads just have to be served in order for a "hit" to count. In those cases, the website still serves that ad to you, your Adblock (or noscript) is simply choosing to not display it to you or to send it through the browser to be processed. In most (but not all) cases there, this still does not impact revenue.

In some cases an ad that is served to you actually is some other imbedded frame or other method of serving content on a different location which your browser will not ever receive if your adblock blocks it. In these cases, some revenue may indeed be lost, however the security risk that you expose your system to by allowing this method of viewing is too high realistically. In an around a bout way this method is also used for a good number of website attacks that are out on the internet.
