Also big fan of Daniel Kitson, Jerry Sadowitz, Frankie Boyle (at least from Mock the week, never seen him live), Ross Noble, but my top comedian is Tim Vine - they guy is so funny you end up being unable to breathe through laughing. And even stranger it's compeltely clean, family friendly.

As far people posters on this board will likely know, Rich Hall, Steve Martin...

I was very excited when I first heard about the generation of "emo kids", and was deeply disappointed when I discovered it didn't mean what I thought it meant.

Anyone who likes standup and also has XM needs to listen to channel 150. I catch most of my standup there, hilarious stuff.

Schimmel is on there, hadn't heard of him prior, but he's hilarious.
Also Stanhope, Bobby Collins, Bob Marley, Mike Birbiglia...the list goes on.

OK, my off the top of my head list is, in no particular order:

Richard Pryor, Sam Kennison (RIP), George Carlin, Sarah Silverman.

But the next guy on the list hasn't had a mention, so let me tell you about Sean Cullen. I had never heard of him until last January when I went on a Barenaked Ladies cruise with my wife and another couple.

Sean opened for Harlan Williams (also funny, but not nearly as), and looked like he had come up on stage without having given any thought to what he was going to say. After about 2 minutes of amusing but uninspired rambling, he launched into the most ridiculous and thoroughly hilarious diatribe about how tragic it is that mice are not capable of making their own cheese.

We laughed so hard I could feel my pulse throbbing in my temples. I was wishing he'd take a breath so my sides might stop hurting so much. I think he spent about 15 minutes or so on stage, but it was absolutely the funniest thing I've ever heard.

He headlined two nights later, and the highlight for me was when he was sharing his fondness for engaging in hand-to-hand combat with various sea creatures, such as squid and halibut. I do not exagerrate when I say that I was crying real tears during at least two different segments of his show.

What's weird, though, is I can't find any clips on the interwebs that recapture the magic of those two routines. There's some quirky and funny Cullen stuff, but nothing approaching the heights attained those two nights, IMO. Maybe he was just in a groove? I don't know, but I highly recommend seeing him live if you ever get the chance.

On New Year's Eve 2003, I got to see Lewis Black, Dave Attell, Mitch Hedburg, and Mike Birbiglia in Philly, at Tower Theater. Sixth row center. Greatest show I've ever been to.

I just saw Black for the third time about a month ago, in Stamford. It was a birthday present from my girlfriend. There was a guy who opened for him, seemed to be a Lewis Black clone. Angry, not as funny, but there were some moments that had me going.

By the way, the hardest I've *ever* laughed was during a rant Lewis Black had on golf during this latest show. My girlfriend thought I was going to pass out from lack of oxygen, because I kept laughing so hard.

As much as I love standup comedy, I've never actually been to a show. I have seen some comedians on TV, and I've listened to some CDs, but that's it. I'm going to Las Vegas in July, and I think I'm going to see George Wallace. I've liked his stuff on television, so I think I'll check his show out.

Oh, yeah, and I like a lot of the other folks that you've all mentioned in this thread. I can't stand Flight of the Conchords because the face on that Jemaine fellow freaks me out. I'm sure they're funny, but I simply can't watch them. I AM SO SHALLOW

Next Friday for me.

The only big name comedians I have seen live are George Carlin and Stephen Lynch (and Lynch is a bit of a stretch to say "big name").

Has anyone listened to Russell Peters? He's hosting Comedyfest here in Chicago this month, and I think he's just brilliant.

Ignore the haters, it'll be fantastic, he has a lot of charisma and he'll have original material... as long as you haven't seen this guy recently

PS, if Dane Cook tries pulling some crying "I was so unloved in HS because I was misunderstood" routine - please call him out. He wasn't misunderstood - he was a huge douchebag, and he's still close to a punchline in Arlington. It is what it is.

I just saw a special of his on Comedy Central the other night and I had never seen him do stand-up before... I was just dying throughout the whole show. It was great. And I am not usually a big stand-up fan.

I heard my favorite stand-up comedian, Daniel Tosh, is getting some sort of show. One person said it was gonna be similar to Demitri Martin's, the other said it was gonna be him on the internet making fun of movies. Either way, sounds great.

EDIT - apparently 1st episode was last night. Oops, hope it was good.

I don't get Demitri Martin. I saw a bit of his show, and it was like a bad sketch comedy attempt at replicating that Vote For Pedro movie.

Demetri Martin... definitely a taste you have or don't.

Tosh's show... I can easily see devolving into interviews where he has 1-2 hilarious, original comments, but no one (including me) at this point wants to watch a 5 minute+ interview for that one line... Put him in Conan's old place in late-night and he would kill.

+1

I saw Doug Stanhope at a small little bar in DC several months ago. His mother had just committed suicide, he spent the entire show in a drunken haze, and really should have just stayed at home that night.

Izzard - had no idea so many others were onto him. always felt like he was on of those guys I liked that no one else knew about.

Mike Birbiglia - cracker, please

Patton Oswalt - his stand up is so 180 degrees away from his character on King of Queens, made it that much funnier.

Brian Regan - he kills me and my kids know every word.

Ron White - saw him before all the blue color stuff and I absolutely loved him. Tater Salad, classic

Mitch Hedberg - I thought he was brilliant and tortured. Always felt like all the other guys I liked were doing their act, and Hedberg just actually thought and talked that way all the time.

Wow, great thread for recomendations. I had heard Mike Birbiglia's stories on This American Life and never really realized he was a comedian instead of a commentator and I've been laughing my ass off on Youtube for the past thirty minutes.

Maybe this thread is as good a place as any to ask after a comedian who I have NO IDEA OF THE NAME OF. All I can say is he was on Conan, like, seriously, a decade ago? Maybe? And he made a joke about making a river of lava on the US-Candian border and turning the whole thing into a game show where if you got across you'd be in scott free. Anybody have ANY idea?
