I don't remember the exact episode, but one of the episodes around Ted's and Stella's wedding episode showed what Ted's children would have looked like if he had married Stella (Both had blonde hair I believe).

Stella mentioned that she was at a St. Patrick's Day party with some friends on the night that Ted happened to be at a St. Patrick's Day party and went back and got the yellow umbrella. And we know that the umbrella is related to the Mom. So I am thinking that the Mom might be Stella's friend. And (this is more speculative), Stella might have seen the umbrella and thought that she was tapping her friend on the shoulder and not Ted. (though you would think that she would at least have noticed that the person holding the umbrella was a guy and not a lady).

While this season has had some funny moments, overall its been a waste. I am beginning to think that shows should take the approach used in the UK - fewer seasons with fewer episodes.

I'm sorry, but I can't imagine dating the friend of the girl who left me at the alter. Maybe that's just me, but seems like lazy writing. Hopefully that is not the direction that the plot will go. I also hope they don't somehow re-enter Stella into the picture, although I did want her to be the mother originally. The two minute date was one of the coolest things in a sitcom, especially since it was all one take.

Anyway, after looking at some of these spoilers, I'm fine now thinking that Stella is what directly leads to finding the mother (I forgot about the "how you'd look if Stella was your mom scene"). Maybe the mom is Stella's friend or something.

Most disappointing episode of the series, by far. They built it up to be something major, but instead it was Stella in, Stella out. There was nothing to further the storyline. Had this been a typical episode, that would be fine. However, they built things up in the previous episode as though something major was going to happen.

My wife and I agreed that this was a disappointment. The only thing I could figure was that this whole situation will allow the "romantic, open to love" Ted to come back, as the Stella situation killed that. But if that was the case, they did a crappy job of showing that during the course of the season and these two episodes. A lot of build up for little pay off at the end, but I'm sorta getting used to that now. I kinda wish it had ended after season 3 with Stella as the wife, followed up by the super-awesome barney spinoff show.

As opposed to "Big Bang Theory" which I felt like really hit with a bang last night. The whole awkward "what does this blanket mean? what did that long hug mean? What..." thing, followed by Penny curling up on the other side of the door saying "it means i wish you wouldn't go" I thought did a great job of breathing real potential back into the leonard-penny thing.

I guess I'm alone in thinking last night's episode was one of the better ones of the series, but I guess I knew going into the episode that Stella wasn't going to be the mother based on the what would Stella and Ted's kids look like episode. I really like how we got an episode that actually related to the mother for once. If I had forgotten about the episode or not seen it, then I probably would have been disappointed like most people here.

We got one piece of information that will be revisited next season, that being Tony's movie (based future Ted saying "More on that later" and its May 2010 date). I would imagine Ted meeting the mother somehow involves the movie or it is another step in Ted meeting the mom (like finding the penny was back from season 2).

I'm a bit confused as to how meeting Stella helped Ted meet the mother. Unless something Stella told Ted in the car is something he uses soon and that gets her. Or maybe allowed Ted to be a romantic again (ie, attached the strings?).

Though I liked the episode in general. The murder-house scene was great and the flash forward to Stella's future with the movie "we'll get to later" (assuming it is based on the Ted/Stella/Stella's husband story).

I don't think they did a bad job showing Ted's romantic side got killed off. In a lot of critic articles and blogs there was references to "douche Ted", but sometimes it was welcome, as it was amusing.

Also, Barney works in a show like this, where he is part of an ensemble. A show where he is the main lead would likely crash and burn.

What I meant is we never saw Ted avoid what might have been a good situation for him because he was gun-shy due to what happened with Stella. Or if we did, I don't remember it.

And in response to someone else, I don't think anyone here thought Stella was going to be the mother since the wedding breakup. I just think we were expecting something in this episode that was moving the ball forward, not just some hint at something that will be brought up again in a year that might be somehow related to something to do with the mother.

I don't think any of us thought Stella might be the mom. The disappointing part is the build up they gave this episode last week as though something new and exciting was going to be revealed. It was not.

No. But has he had a serious relationship since the Stella episode? Getting back with the ex that cheated on him in college (Laura Prepon's character) doesn't count.

True, but lots of people go more than a year without a serious relationship, not just people that were left at the alter. The whole "strings were cut" thing seemed a bit out of place given how quickly he seemed to get over her as shown on the show.

I didn't like the finale very much. The goat subplot was just stupid and the Ted/goat fight was beyond stupid. The jumping thing was funny at first, but they went back to it too much and spent way too much time on it.

I did like the reference to the Svens and liked the Barney/Robin hospital scene. I thought the season was pretty good overall, but it peaked a few weaks ago for me.

goat was dumb, jumping was overdone as a metaphor, but the barney/robin stuff and the continuation of the ted/mom storyline made it a great episode i thought

doubt it. I think what's happened is the show's supposed to be about Ted, but Ted's such a douche at times that his friends are more interesting; its become almost "Friends", with each of the 4-5 characters having an interesting story. For example, the Barney-Marshall dynamic is easily my favorite pairing of the show.

I was psyched for the goat and such a let down. I liked the Barney-Robin storyline with Robin constantly "Mosbying" Barney because she didn't know what she wanted... and the Marshall-Lily was meh to me as well.
