The parents who names the CF for Philadelphia are very cruel.
I have read biographies on Kerouac and always thought it was pretty cool that he invented his own game. |

I did this with construction paper cutouts of football player shaped dudes.
Had a 12 team league, 20 game season, and judged the skill of the player by the quality with which I managed to cut them out.. My parents even bought me this blanket that happened to have a field printed on it, at the exact scale of the players. Needless to say, I was obsessed like this from age 7 til.. 19? Somewhere after that I guess I lost my innocence.. But damn.. I had about 50 construction paper "seasons" of history and even a hall of fame for the retired legends.. (players were "retired" when their contruction paper bodies ripped or tore because of old age and were no longer able to be fixed with scotch tape.. Thats also how i handled injuries..) I'm quite surprised I managed to get laid at some point and that I have been able to maintain a respectable quality of girlfriend despite this.

For anyone else like me who was going "Who the heck is Jack Kerouac and why should I care?" I went ahead and Googled for you:

This is relatively well known among tabletop sports gaming geeks.
There have been attempts to recreate the game over the years & others that emulated the style if the not the exact rules & procedures in homage.

Very cool. It reminds me of the Universal Baseball Association, by Robert Coover. Well worth a read.

Kerouac had the habit of leaving his starting pitchers in too long. BUSH league!!

I love the names he came up with for the players. Also, this makes me feel less like a geek for doing very similar things (er... maybe less like a geek...)

I ran a dice based football game in junior high with fictional players and some minor management aspects. If I'd known that anyone would buy a computer game of that nature, I would have gotten into programming.
