WTF Three Stooges movie!

I just see that they are going to make a Three Stooges movie and think there should be federal law against anyone ever remaking certain movie or tv series. The stooges would be near the top of my list. And the cast: Sean Penn as Larry (will he protest pie throwing), Jim Carrey as Curly (not too bad)
and Benicio del Toro (rumored to be top choice) good fucking God no.

Carey fits, Benicio del Toro fits because he can play the straight man. Penn is really the one that seems kind of an odd pick, but he's talented enough I'll at least pass some grace his way.

This sounded odd, but fairly interesting until I saw this:

The film is not a biopic but a fictional treatment that maintains the Stooges' gleeful slap schtick updated for a modern milieu.

I agree that Penn stands out as the oddball here. This sounds like somewhat of a slapstick comedy, so it is hard to understand where he would fit in. I think the last (and possibly only?) time I have seen him in a comedy was in Fast Times.

I can also envision Penn going apeshit on Carey at some point during production.

Not sure if Shanghai Surprise could fall in 'comedy' category (been a long long time since I saw that)

He was also in a few episodes of Friends.

Penn was hilariously deadpan playing himself in an episode of Ellen that also featured Emma Thompson. The gist was that Emma revealed she was a lesbian and the British thing was all a lie (she was actually from the South). Then during some awards presentation, Penn announced he was gay,

He was also in Being John Malkovich, talking about how Malkovich's career change inspired him.

Penn was in We're No Angels with DeNiro. Comedy doesn't seem like his thing. Benicio seems like worse casting.

Benicio del Toro is undecided because he is weighing an offer from Kenny Ortega to take Zak Efron's place in the remake of Footloose.

I like Penn as Larry, because Larry always seemed to be the 3rd wheel.

It was 2 brother and Larry with Shemp, and then 2 brothers and Larry with Curly and then back to 2 brothers and Larry when Shemp came back.

I can't decide whether this is just another terrible idea, or mind-blowing ingenuity on the part of the people behind this.

Based on most Hollywood remake vehicles, I'll go ahead and re-imagine this Curly quote as the reason someone went with it:

"I try to think, but nothin' happens. Nyuk, nyuk, nyuk."

I loved the Stooges growing up, though.

Insane. It's not like the 3 Stooges were characters, really. It'd be like doing a remake of a stand-up comic or something. I can't imagine this being funny at all. They would have to deviate from the original quite a bit to pull it off I think.

Bill Clinton is lined up to do a cameo as Joe Besser.
