Good Sports Mag?
So I like to have a sports magazine lying around the house to keep me vaguely in the know about things, but I just can't find a magazine that I like. ESPN is more than 50% ads (and not about anything that's happened recently), Sports Illustrated can be tiresomely dull and... well, OK I haven't tried any others. That's where you come in: what sports mag would you recommend I try? Thanks fellas and ladies!

Most magazines are 50% ads.

Sporting News used be really good but now they have gone to every two weeks and i am really not all excited about the change. They are trying to drive business to their which has daily updates.

I prefer Sports Illustrated. I used to get The Sporting News. But when it went to that bi-monthly format, I dropped it. Was never a fan of ESPN the Magazine.

USA Today's Sports Weekly isn't too bad but it only really features football and baseball.

I used to get all 3 - SI, TSN and ESPN. ESPN was some of the all-time worst writing I've ever seen.
TSN, as mentioned, has gone bi-monthly, and made some other format changes I don't like. I loved old TSN, I'm a sucker for notebook format. So that leaves SI. The most expensive of the 3, but you'll get one or two decent articles in each issue, and every second or third issue, a pretty good feature article.

I used to have SI because someone gave it to me as a gift, and it was nothing special. It's much better than ESPN though which is atrocious. I say, none of the above. Don't get a sports mag and just use the web.

Maybe I mean ESPN is MORE than 50% ads - anyway, it feels like it as there are never two pages with articles on them back to back. Looks like slim pickings out there

With the all of the internet information out there nowadays, weekly sports magazines are fairly useless. By the time they get to you, unless you do not frequent any sports sites online, all of the news will be pretty out of date.
If you are looking for some to just have around, I would reccommend annuals or previews from whichever sport or sports you most enjoy. I always get 3-4 college football previews (Phil Steele's is the best to me, Sporting News, Athlon, etc. are all good and you can learn, at least a little bit, about teams other than your own and those in your teams' conference). I think the Sporting News produces pretty decent preview issues for all major pro sports and college football and basketball. |

Yea, I can't recommend any in good faith, either... I'd also suggest just checking around internet sites periodically to keep in the know. That was always my biggest beef with SI - I just can't read old news - even with a weekly mag. Granted, they have features and columns in addition, but many of them just didn't interest me.
The funny thing is, I get more info (and in a more timely fashion) from fantasy sites like rotoworld than I do at espn or other 'pure' sports sites - and it's less irritating, too, since espn is inundated with ads that pop up but don't pop up (like newspaper sites, grrrrr.) |
