Bulletin Boards
How hard is it to set up a BB and what is the one that has the most features anymore?

If you have some technical skills, it is no big deal at all to get one set up. As for features, it all depends if you are looking for a free BB solution, or a pay one. For free, phpbb is pretty common, and has a decent feature set. For pay, vbulletin seems to be the most common.

As far as free boards go, I think the Simple Machines Forum.

This. I know of two different sites who moved away from phpBB. SMF is what I used when I ran a site for my City of Heroes super group. The most technical aspect of the whole thing is uploading the files to the server and getting it set up. Once it's set up, it's a breeze from there. |

It depends on how you want to go about it. I have dreamhost for my hosting, and they have a "one-click install" of phpBB. You just say go to the dreamhost web interface and say "I want to install phpBB" and it gets installed. It doesn't get much easier than that.

I have set up phpBB on many different sites and that is a fairly straight-forward and painless install. I enjoy all the different mods and such that you can get for it as well, but it is really the only one I have used extensively (at least on the admin side), so I don't have much of a comparison.

I ran wwiv, but pcb and renegade seemed far more popular.

New Orleans was a WWIV town. I was on a PCB or two, but I never saw a Renegade at all. The DOS boards in my area were about 90% WWIV.

Well, later on, particularly in the ANSI scene, things like OBV/2, Vision-X and some others really started to take hold. Whatever made it easiest to integrate some |<-R4D ANSIs into your screens.

vBulletin is very good if you are running a large forum, but if you are just starting out I would recommend you try the free software until you build up your community. You may be able to import the messages into a vBulletin board at a later date.
Setting up vBulletin is easy if you have had any web development experience. |

The community would be roughly 15-20 regulars with new people regularly coming in. The big question is how long the new people stick around which I don't really know. I'm trying to get away from Yahoo! Groups and move to a BB which is what prompted the question. |

Is there something you are trying to tell us?
