Restaurants in D.C.

Need some help...my little brother is heading to D.C. for business and is going to have the wife tag along. He asked me for suggestions about where to go for a nice evening...something the lady would like, too. While I was there several years ago, I was usually at a sports bar with buddies so I really don't have any good suggestions for him.

They are pretty open-minded when it comes to food so just wondering if any of you local DC guys have any suggestions or else anybody who's had a good experience while they were visiting the area.

I ate at Old Ebbitt Grill (Old Ebbitt Grill) when I was in town a couple weeks ago. I've been there before and always enjoyed it.

He can also try La Perla (404 Not Found. Really good Italian food, but a bit pricey.

Nice Places I have enjoyed:

Les Halles (French Bistro/Steakhouse)
Kinkead's (seafood)
The Oceanaire (seafood)

D.C. also has a small (2 blocks or so) Chinatown that I have enjoyed (though I don't remember the names of everywhere I went). Though I have heard that not every resturant in the Chinatown is good, so he will want to check and find a recommended place if Chinese looks appealing.

Oh, and if they are looking for something very cheap and very good, Ben's Chili Bowl has great chili and great milkshakes--but it is definitely not a date night place.

Finally, Adams Morgan is my favorite resturant/bar/nightlife neighborhood. There is an Ethopian place there I really like, but, again, I cannot remember the name. Still, if they like walking around after dinner and getting coffee/drinks/etc., it would not be a bad place to start.

Last time we were there, some friends took us to Ana Maria's in Dupont Circle for Itallian. It was very good.

Depends on the price and type of food. I agree with the Oceanaire and its convenient to the metro. I work right next to Chinatown and there are some good places here. Georgetown has really nice places. Check out 1789.

There are some OK italian places here, but if you like NY Italian, don't bother with it down here. I have been trying to find a place for years now. Tried Filomena and iRicchi, nothing great.

It definitely depends on where he is staying, how far he's willing to travel, and what food they like. DC has as large a variety of foods as any other city. Ben's is definitely the casual place to go, but as was stated, its not really a date sorta place. One of the tapas style restaurants would certainly be good (jaleo, oyamel, zatinya), they're all located on the edge of Chinatown. Georgetown has a lot of good places, such as 1789. Adams Morgan has some better "everyday nice" places, as opposed to upscale Georgetown. The rest of the city has excellent food as well, so it would be easier if things were narrowed down.

For Ethiopian food (very interesting if you haven't had it before), try Zeds on M Street in Georgetown.

Ten Penh on Pennsylvania Ave is very good.

Zatinya (near the Verizon Center) has Mediterranean mezze/tapas - really good, and a very high energy place.

Cafe Atlantico (also near the Verizon Center) - very good Caribbean food.

Black Salt - in the Palisades neighborhood - is the best fish restaurant in the city (Oceannaire, recommended earlier, is also very good). If you can't get a reservation, you can always eat at the upscale bar.

Thanks for all the suggestions so far...keep them coming!! I'll hop online later tonight or tomorrow and check some of them out to give my brother something to browse.

Something else that's been suggested is a dinner cruise. I've been on one at home (Ottawa) as my wife had never been on the river so thought it might be nice and it was fantastic. Anybody ever been on a dinner cruise in DC or, I guess for you locals, would that be something you'd consider doing for a night on the town??

I went on the Spirit of Washington in place of Prom in HS. It was nice. Maybe on the border between nice and cheesy though. I think if you've got someone that likes interesting places to eat then you have a lot better FOOD choices in DC. If you're looking for an interesting night it could be fun.

For my money - I think I'd rather eat at an interesting restaurant and catch a show (even if an obscure show) than do the cruise thing.

I would ditto this one. I actually work in the same building and eat there pretty often. They have a great menu and atmosphere - and outside dining if you want it.

+1 on Les Halles. I always get a good meal when I go there.

My wife and I enjoy going for tapas at Jaleo's, next to the Verizon Center.

my opinion would be that ocean air is the place to go.... if you can afford it! but it depends how adventurous you are! we have lots of diverse ethnic foods here.

The food's not bad. Nothing to write home about, but above average bar fare. I've loved the desserts at Brickskeller everytime I've gone.
