PS3 Advice...

So the last time I had a game console it was an atari, what can I say I have always stuck with PC games. Now that I have a HD tv and with Blue Ray, it looks like I am finally going to purchase a gaming console. Naturally since I mentioned Blue Ray that means a PS3 or PS2, so I have been reading up on things trying to get familar with the systems.

The biggest thing I am confused about is the backwards compatibility of the PS3 so that you can play PS2 games. I read in one place where the 80gb PS3 for $400 coming out in September will not be backwards compatible with PS2 games. Some other information I read stated that the current 80gb PS3 for $500 is compatible with PS2 games.

Does anyone have any experience with this?

Thanks in advance...

Older 80 GB models did emulate PS2 games, but I believe that the new version coming out is NOT backwards compatible. If you want BC, you need to find an older 80 GB model used, or the 60 GB. I imagine those are both somewhat hard to find at this point.

I am wondering if the 80gb PS3 I saw at my local Best Buy for $500 and the same one was on Newegg.com are PS2 capatible.

Maybe it is not worth the fuss to get a system that is backward compatible but it looks like there are alot of nice PS2 games that are pretty cheap.

Is it the MGS4 one? I know that one is backwards compatible, since my friend picked it up specifically for Disgaea 3. The 80gb PS3 I got was the MotorStorm bundle.

Keep in mind that the MGS4 bundle is not 100% backwards compatible like the launch PS3s were. They will play most games but not all. Sony has a website somewhere on the internet where you can check to see if your PS2 games will run on it. All PS3s play all PS1 games fwiw.

The vast majority of the PS2 games are playable on the 80 GB MSG4 PS3 bundle. Most of the games that aren't playable are relatively rare. Here's the official list if you'd like to check for specific games.

Very cool! This is the type of info I am looking for, I think the bundle I saw was MGS4.

I've also been thinking about buying a PS3 because of the Blu-ray capability. My buddy has a 40 gig and it's awesome. I don't want to spend $500 on the MGS4 version so I'm going to wait till the holidays and look for deals similar to the Wal-Mart one I missed out on a couple months ago.

If you need BC, you always could get a PS2, as I believe those are $129 or less now, $79 used. I don't think you will be finding a need to play PS2 games though. I fell in love with the PS3 and ended up selling the PS2 for credit.
