Most Overpaid Sports Journalists

http://thebiglead.com/?p=6296

Holy crap. I'm not complete sure of the accuracy of this list, but I will say that if Jason Whitlock really makes $650,000 a year between The Star and Fox Sports, he is without a doubt the most overpaid fat pussy toad in sports since at least Hideki Irabu.

Reilly, Wilbon, Albom, Lupica, Simmons ... those names make sense at the top of the list. But Jason freakin' Whitlock as the eighth-highest paid sports journalists in the country? I'm gagging and vomitting at the same time. I'm gavomitting.

Albom sucks. I loved him back in the day, but he's really lost it.

Also, I'd rather read something by Whitlock than Woody Paige. He's awful. From the few things I've ever read from Jay Marrioti, he's pretty bad as well.

Pre-Morrie Abom was great. Since then, he's ego has soared and integrity fallen.

I'm not much of a Paige or Marriotti fan, and I suppose familiarity breeds contempt. But this week Whitlock penned two of his by far most ridiculous columns in ever -- first, he said foreign players weren't good enough or tough enough to win titles in the NBA, then the next day retracted that column when everyone pointed out that San Antonio won titles with even more foreign players than Los Angeles had. Then compounded that by claiming it was only his second mistake he's ever made, the other one being that the Chiefs were going to go 16-0 because they signed Chester McGlockton.

He still stands by his argument that Jeff George should be quarterbacking and NFL team.

Interesting list...comments....

Whitlock probably gets paid big because of being in the Midwest. Albom is somewhat but not really.

Reilly is an overrated windbag.

Wilbon, even at $2 million is a good buy. He's my favorite.

Heh! That's classic! I don't see why he felt the need to take the page out of Don Cherry's book and apply it to basketball. It's great that he got called out for it.

Sports columnists, like political columnists, provide value for their employers by generating content that attracts readers. You can do this by doing a lot of research, making great insights and penning very erudite columns.

Or you can do it by acting controversial and/or idiotic.

Whitlock isn't a very good writer in my estimation and is even more useless on TV. Wilbon and Tony K are great. Rick Reilly is overrated, but not as overrated as Bill Simmons.

you think his name is really Richard Reilly? who names their kids "Rick". that's a nickname.

technically his name could be Dick Reilly. that sounds like a great comic book detective name.

"Dick Reilly here. Now ma'am, could you describe the villain for me...?"

He was about 7 inches tall and wore a hat. Had a rain jacket on too. Two of his smaller buddies were backing him up as well, and they were topless.

korme (pronounced kor-may) sounds like a really funny, but bumbling sidekick. like a mexican sidekick who always smiles and sips from his tequila flask.

The Adventures of Dick Reilly and Korme.

or, if pronounced kor-me, it could be a cute nickname for Professor Kormelius that his wife calls him.

"korme, could you remember to bring me up some tea before you leave your lab?"

What if it's his sidekick and a pet name from his wife. Then there could be all sorts of shenanigans when the sidekick comes over for dinner.

Jason Whitlock, KC Star, Fox Sports: Insiders estimate his Star salary to be in the $250k-$350k a year range, and they surmise he’s probably making close to the same at Fox, putting his yearly take in the $550-650k range.

Glad to see the Star knows how to make sound financial decisions.

Yeah, there's a media blog here in KC that noted that having Whitlock meant five or six other reporters lost their jobs.

Trust me, I understand the argument that having an obnoxious sports columnist sells papers to some people. I don't subscribe to The Star, I read it online and buy a copy at machines when I need one. If they fired Whitlock, I'd call up and subscribe tomorrow and tell them why.

I had to mention that even if Bill Simmons pays me to read his columns, he would still be grossly overpaid. I can't stand that guy. Also don't care for Mariotti/Whitlock/Paige.......

Simmons is an idiot. Boston Articles or recycled 80s jokes must have a huge fan base.

I like Wilbon and Reilly. Reilly does quirky pieces, but they are typically good writing and witty. Wilbon is just solid all around. The only other one on the list I consistently read and like is Peter King. (glad Dr. Z isn't on there, I like him too)

Whitlock is a hit and miss guy. I've LOVED some of his articles, but others are as bad a Simmons or Bob Ryan (a hack at best)
