College Days Revisited
I created this dynasty over on the OOTP boards last year, but have dusted it off for posting here since this is the spot for football. Basically I'm going to play through college football history of the past (the last 33 years) using Haffner's 3-in-1 football. Not a flashy sim by any stretch, 3-in-1 does have virtually every Division I school and I've found that I actually have all the uninterrupted season disks from 1956 on (only recently found the older stuff, I originally thought 1974 was the starting point of my continuous string of disks). Anyway, we're starting with '74. If things go well, I may go back to 1956 and start over...
Here's the preview of the 1974 College Gridiron Season: Preseason Top 20 Poll (the actual preseason poll from 1974): 1) Oklahoma 2) Ohio State 3) Notre Dame 4) Alabama 5) Southern Cal 6) Michigan 7) Nebraska 8) Penn State 9) LSU 10) Texas 11) Houston 12) UCLA 13) Pittsburgh 14) Maryland 15) Arizona State 16) Tennessee 17) Arizona 18) NC State 19) Arkansas 20) Texas A&M Top 10 Previews #1 Oklahoma (10-0-1 in 1973) - BYE week on 9/7 Coach Barry Switzer's squad is a juggernaut and returns 39 of 50 letterman from an unbeaten season in 1973. Nine of the offensive starters from a unit that produced 453.3 yards and 36.4 points per game a year ago are back and that spells trouble for Big 8 opponents. Heading things up are quarterback Steve Davis and halfback Joe Washington. Both are juniors coming off solid sophomore campaigns. Washington churned out 1173 yards and 10 TDs in '73 while adding 482 yards on kick and punt returns. Fullback Waymon Clark is coming off a 1014 yard season himself, so the ground game is on solid - ahem - ground. Five of the defensive starters are back and defense is Switzer's main concern entering the new campaign. "We've got to find some down linemen and the secondary is a concern," the coach concedes. Of course, Switzer has some solid down linemen already in the brother tackle tandem of Lee Roy and Dewey Selmon, so you've got to believe that the Sooners will do just fine on defense. #2 Ohio State (10-0-1 in '73) - BYE week on 9/7 Woody Hayes has a simple philosophy - cram the ball down the other guys' throats. And the Buckeyes execute that simple commandment like no other college squad. In 1973 the Bucks' churned out an incredible 4511 yards on offense - and 3908 of them came via the rush. Leading the charge in 1974 will be bruising sophomore fullback Pete Johnson, who goes 6-1, 240 and piled up 162 yards in OSU's spring game. While Johnson is the body blow, the jab will come from the man who is perhaps the top back in all of college football, junior tailback Archie Griffin. Griffin, a flashy 5-9, 184 pounder, has racked up 2444 yards in his two varsity seasons thus far and set an all-time Big 10 record with 1577 last season. He's also run up a string of 11-straight 100-yard games entering the 1974 season. Cornelius Greene - another flashy runner - will handle the quarterbacking duties and durable Brian Baschnagel will handle the wingback spot. The defense is rock-solid as well, coming off a 1973 season in which they were first nationally in scoring and fourth in yardage allowed. Van DeCree, an All-America selection, starts at end and another All-American, Neal Colzie anchors a tremendous secondary. #3 Notre Dame (11-0 in 1973) - takes on Georgia Tech 9/9 Ara Parseghian's assesment of his team following spring workouts: "We're ahead of where we were a year ago at this time defensively." That should send shudders through the Irish's 1974 opponents. After all, the 1973 Irish defense allowed 2012 yards and just 66 points in 10 games heading into their 24-23 Sugar Bowl win over Alabama. Those numbers were good for second and third respectively in the nation. The stars of the defense are on the line: Mike Fanning (6-6, 254) at tackle and sophomore Ross Browner (6-3, 218) at end. Browner was third on the team in tackles as a freshman and has only improved. Quarterback Tom Clements will head up an offense which, despite losing star tight end Dave Casper to the NFL, should be among the nation's most effective. Clements, a senior, holds a 19-3 lifetime record as a starter heading into '74. The rushing chores will be split between halfbacks Art Best and Eric Penick and fullback Wayne Bullock - a trio that piled up 2398 yards last season. Split end Pete Demmerle is an All-America candidate with sure hands. #4 Alabama (11-1 in '73) - BYE week on 9/7 Bear Bryant's Crimson Tide came within a hair of the national championship, missing a 12-0 record with a 24-23 loss at the hands of the Fighting Irish in the Sugar Bowl. Bryant's team is primed and ready for another run at the title in 1974. Bryant's wishbone attack will once again be led by the two-headed QB tandem of Gary Rutledge and Richard Todd. The Bear also has a bevy of talented backs on hand to make sure his rushing attack is always fresh. Alabama piled up 748 yards rushing (an NCAA record) in one game last season, so expect the Tide to keep rolling out the attack. 'Bama tallied 5288 yards for the season and 41.3 points per game in 1974. On defense the Tide is led by All-American linebacker Woodrow Lowe, who garnered that elite honor as a sophomore. #5 Southern Cal (9-2-1 in '73) - BYE week 9/7 Trojan coach John McKay is rarely without a cigar, and he'll likely be lighting many a celebratory stogie this season. A team that tied with Oklahoma and lost to Notre Dame before dropping the Rose Bowl to Ohio State should be improved over a year ago. Seven starters return on each side of the ball, providing continuity to a very solid and well-rounded squad. On offense the Trojans boast not one, but two Heisman candidates in senior tailback Anthony Davis (1112 yds, 12 TDs in '73) and senior signal caller Pat Haden (137-247 for 1832 yds, 13 TDs). Haden has a potential All-America receiver in Johnny McKay (yep, he's the coach's kid) as well as standout tight end Jim O'Bradovich and speedy Shelton Diggs who steps into the shoes of the NFL-bound Lynn Swann. The defense is solid with an All-American in linebacker Richard Wood and frighteningly talented sophomore tackle Gary Jeter leading the way. #6 Michigan (10-0-1 in '73) - BYE week on 9/7 Bo Schembechler is not shy about admitting his number one philosophy: defense wins ball games. And the record proves that the coach knows what he's talking about: the Wolverines has led the nation twice and finished second once in the last three years in scoring defense and been in the top ten in total defense in all five of Schembechler's years at Ann Arbor. As long as the defense continues its superb play, the Wolverines will be a lock for a top ten ranking all season long, because the offense is going to come to play this season. Chuck Heater, Gil Chapman and Gordon Bell will handle the ball carrying, and all are capable, exciting runners. Added to that is speedy quarterback Dennis Franklin a two-time All-Big 10 who's rushed for 2288 yards and 20 TDs in two seasons and quarterbacked the team to 20 wins in his 22 starts. Despite suffering a broken collarbone against Ohio State last season, Franklin appears ready to lead the Wolverines' charge in 1974. #7 Nebraska (9-2-1 in '73) - BYE week 9/7 Coach Tom Osborne will frankly admit that his Cornhuskers lost a lot of talent to graduation: two All-Americans, their fullback and most of the nation's top pass-defending secondary are gone from a team that went 9-2-1 and finished second (again) to Oklahoma. Tony Davis, who played I-Back last year and rushed for 1114 yards, will take over at fullback. John O'Leary moves into the starting I-back slot and wingback will be Ritch Bahe, who was Nebraska's third-leading ground gainer and top pass receiver in '73. The man running the wishbone will be quarterback David Humm who in two varsity campaigns has passed for 3785 yards and 30 TDs. And backing him up is sophomore Earl Everett who showed flashes of brilliance as a frosh in '73. The defense is rebuilding, but Osborne believes all will be well with the Huskers. "We've got a tradition to uphold, and I believe we'll get it done," the no-nonsense coach opines. #8 Penn State (12-0 in '73) - BYE week 9/7 Coach Joe Paterno has the best winning percentage of all head coaches in the major collegiate ranks and despite losing 13 starters, you can expect that Joe Pa will have the Nittany Lions' well-oiled machine up and running in 1974. In eight years as top Lion tamer, the well-coiffed Paterno sports a 75-13-1 record and his team has appeared in six straight bowl contests, winning last season's Orange Bowl over LSU. Replacing Heisman winner Joe Cappelletti at tailback won't be easy but senior Walt Addie (6-2, 207) will give it a shot. Woody Petchel and Rusty Boyle will also get some reps at the position. Fullback will be Tom Donchez and the quarterback is returning starter Tom Shuman. Despite a rebuilt defense, the Nittany Lions should be stingy on that side of the ball, with a solid linebacking corps (as usual) of Steve Jackson, Greg Buttle and Chris Devlin. #9 LSU (9-3 in '73) - BYE week 9/7 Coach Charlie McClendon notes that the Chinese calendar indicates that 1974 is the Year of the Tiger - and he plans on making that a self-fulfilling prophecy. McClendon has changed to the veer offense for 1974, hoping to add even more firepower to a high-octane offense that finished second in the SEC to national powerhouse Alabama. The top back and the man who fuel the veer is senior tailback Brad Davis who is just 404 yards shy of setting the school career rushing record (held by Billy Cannon). Another talent is Terry Robiskie, a dazzling combination of size (203 lbs), speed, football sense and breathtaking moves. The Tigers lost QB Mike Miley, who elected to give pro baseball and it's big money a try, and will replace him with sophomore Carl Trimble and senior Billy Broussard. Defense looks solid as well with a pair of solid tackles in junior Steve Cassidy and sophomore Adam (A.J.) Duhe. Safety Mike Williams anchors the secondary. #10 Texas (8-3 in '73) - BYE week 9/7 Coach Darrell Royal is entering his 18th season at the helm of the University of Texas Longhorns and despite the loss of bruising fullback Roosevelt Leaks (lost to a season-ending knee injury during spring practice), the season's fortunes look bright. David Bartek, a former linebacker, steps into Leaks' fullback position. Marty Akins will step under center and can hand off to Bartek, Don Burrisk and Joe Aboussie or toss it to one of his talented receivers - the swift Raymond Clayborn or tight end Parker Alford. The most exciting piece of the puzzle could be frosh Earl Campbell who was a sensation as the state's most highly sought-after prep star in 1973. Jimmy Walker, who missed his freshman campaign with a knee injury is another tantalizing talent to man the backfield. The defense is led by defensive tackle Doug English and linebacker Wade Johnston, who is a devastating tackler. HEISMAN WATCH Top Candidates for the Heisman, and where they're playing this week: Tom Clements, QB (ND) - facing Georgia Tech is the only top candidate in action this week. GAME OF THE WEEK #11 Houston at #15 Arizona State The Cougars and Sun Devils hook up in an early-season test for both squads. Houston was 11-1 in 1973, and though not eligible for a conference crown in the SWAC until 1976, should field a strong team in a tough league. Chuck Fairbanks, son of the former Oklahoma coach, quarterbacks for Houston and is backed up by Les Saucier, both capable signal callers. Arizona State lost All-America quarterback Danny White to graduation and replaces him with the unproven junior Ray Alexander, but it's on defense that Frank Kush's squad butters its bread, and Big Bad Bob Breunig (a linebacker) leads a rough-and-ready squad.

Week of 9/7/74
Major scores from the first week of play:
Code:
TOP HEADLINES: #18 WOLFPACK ROLLS OVER WAKE Lou Holtz's North Carolina State Wolfpack went up 24-0 after three quarters against ACC rival Wake Forest and held on for a 24-8 win. Stan Fritts, the bruising fullback, piled up 106 yards on 28 carries and the change-up, tailback Roland Hooks added 90 more on 12 carries while QB Dan Buckey was 5-of-6 for 99 yards and a score. #12 BRUINS EDGE #16 VOLS In a tight, defensive struggle that didn't see a TD scored until the third quarter, the visiting UCLA Bruins under new head coach Dick Vermeil picked up a 14-7 victory at Tennessee. The Bruins' defense was especially stingy, allowing the Vols to gain just 80 yards on 40 rushes and 40 more yards through the air. Stanley Morgan's 33-yard scamper in the fourth was the only Volunteer scoring play. UCLA got two field goals in the first half and a 48-yard TD run by Eddie Ayers in the third quarter, followed by a successful 2-point conversion. #3 FIGHTING IRISH DODGE A BULLET #3 Notre Dame fell behind a very game Georgia Tech team early and used a successful two point conversion with less than two minutes to avoid a major upset with an 11-10 victory. Tech Coach Pepper Rodgers, returning to his alma mater after a coaching stint with UCLA, nearly pulled out a big victory as the Yellow Jackets scored an early TD and added a 2nd quarter field goal to lead 10-3 at the half. Coach Ara Parseghian's Fighting Irish showed their fight as they used a rare deep pass late in the game with quarterback Tom Clements finding Pete Demmerle for a 55-yard touchdown with just 1:17 left in the game to make it 10-9. Here Parseghian showed remarkable guts, electing to go for the win, and striking paydirt when Clements reached the end zone on a keeper for the two-point conversion and 11-10 win. HEISMAN WATCH Notre Dame's Tom Clements rushed 10 times for 20 yards and completed 5 of 11 passes for 97 yards for a touchdown (and scored the winning two-point conversion) in the Irish's 11-10 win over Georgia Tech. All other top candidates were idle. TOP 20 POLL #1 - Oklahoma (0-0) faces Baylor #2 - Notre Dame (1-0) has a bye #3 - Alabama (0-0) faces #14 Maryland #4 - Ohio State (0-0) faces Minnesota #5 - USC (0-0) faces #20 Arkansas #6 - Michigan (0-0) faces Iowa #7 - Nebraska (0-0) faces Oregon #8 - Penn State (0-0) faces #20 Stanford #9 - LSU (0-0) faces Colorado #10 - Texas (0-0) faces Boston College #11 - Houston (1-0) faces Rice #12 - UCLA (1-0) has a bye #13 - Pittsburgh (0-0) faces Florida State #14 - Maryland (0-0) faces #3 Alabama #15 - Tennessee (0-1) has a bye #16 - North Carolina State (1-0) faces Duke #17 - Arizona (0-0) faces San Diego State #18 - Missouri (0-0) faces Ole Miss #19 - Arkansas (0-0) faces #5 USC #20 - Stanford (0-0) faces #8 Penn State falling out of Top 20 - Arizona State GAME OF THE WEEK #3 Alabama at #14 Maryland Bear Bryant's near-national champions will kick off their season with a tough road game at Maryland's Byrd Stadium. Coach Jerry Claiborne will have his men ready and the Terrapins' ACC-best defense in '73 returns 10 starters who will have their hands full trying to contain the explosive Alabama attack. A matchup to watch will be Maryland defensive tackle Randy White, considered among the favorites for the Outland trophy going up against Alabama center Sylvester Croom, one of the nation's best interior linemen. The handicapping nod has to go to the Crimson Tide, but it should be a close and exciting game.

I'll be posting all the Division I-A scores and I'm sure there'll be some Cougar game recaps as well. BYU takes on Hawaii on 9/14, which is coming up next (probably later today).

Week of 9/14/74
This week's major college scores:
Code:
TOP HEADLINES TODD LEADS TIDE OVER TERPS The #3 Crimson Tide of Alabama started off their 1974 campaign with a tough road win at #14 Maryland. Quarterback Richard Todd led the way for Bear Bryant's charges, rushing for 54 yards and a TD and also passing for a score. The Tide rolled up 358 yards rushing against a very strong Terrapin defense while their own stingy defense held Maryland to 101 yards rushing and 242 total yards. Louis Carter was Maryland's top ground gainer, with 65 yards on 15 carries. True to his word, Coach Bryant spread the carries around, with four runners each gaining more than 50 yards in the game, led by Calvin Culliver (13 rushes for 63 yds). #5 TROJANS "HOG"TIE #19 ARKANSAS Despite not completing a single pass (in 6 attempts), the University of Southern California's Trojans escaped Fayetteville with a 14-10 win over the very tough Arkansas Razorbacks. Led by Heisman-hopeful Anthony Davis' 139 yards on 31 carries, the Men of Troy piled up 319 yards on the ground and held the ball almost 40 minutes. Second-string tailback Allen Carter spelled the workhorse Davis and contributed 93 yards on 16 carries. Sophomore (and converted linebacker) Ricky Bell looked strong on his handful of carries and QB Pat Haden added 20 yards on 12 carries. OKLAHOMA GETS ON TRACK "SOONER" RATHER THAN LATER The Oklahoma Sooners, the nation's top-ranked team, took the field for the first team this season with a trip to Baylor where they upended the Bears by a score of 17-9. Coach Switzer's title-hopefuls churned out 275 yards on the ground. Joe Washington, the flashy tailback of the Sooners tallied 93 yards on 13 carries, while Jim Littrell added 45 on 11 rushes. Baylor's Steve Beaird topped 100 yards against the Sooner defense, picking up 113 yards on 29 carries. Bears QB Neal Jeffrey passed for 135 yards, but tossed an interception. OTHER TOP 10 ACTION * Heisman candidate Archie Griffin rushed for 160 yards on 22 carries, his 12th straight 100+ yard game as #4 Ohio State brushed past Minnesota 21-14. * #6 Michigan opened at home with an easy victory over Iowa, 38-0. Gordon Bell piled up 139 yards on 21 tries. * #7 Nebraska cruised past Oregon, 34-14. The Huskers ran for 346 yards led and four rushing TDs. * #8 Penn State fell in a heartbreaker to #20 Stanford, 14-12. After Stanford's Scott Laidlaw reached paydirt with a 3-yard run in the fourth for a 14-6 Stanford lead, the Nittany Lions ran the ensuing kickoff back 94 yards for a touchdown to pull within two. But the two-point try failed and Joe Pa's team is starting the 1974 season with a loss. * #9 LSU had little trouble with the Colorado Buffaloes, winning 35-7. Brad Davis crept closer to the school rushing record with 105 yards on the day. * Despite being outgained 471 yards to 215, the #10 Texas Longhorns escaped Boston with a 38-34 win over Boston College. Frosh sensation Earl Campbell rushed for 96 yards on 16 carries in his college debut, finding the end zone twice. But the offensive star was BC quarterback Mike Kruczek who was 21-for-34 for 311 yards and a pair of scores. He also tossed a pair of interceptions, which helped lead to the Texas victory. HEISMAN WATCH A good day for Archie Griffin of OSU, Joe Washington of Oklahoma and Anthony Davis of USC among the running backs. Cal quarterback Steve Bartkowski had a big day, completing 20 of 37 throws for 331 yards and a score, but in a vain effort as the Golden Bears were trounced 48-7 at the hands of the Florida Gators. BYU signal caller Gary Scheide was 16-29, 229 yards with a pair of TD passes and an interception against Hawaii. TOP 20 POLL #1 Oklahoma (1-0) has a bye #2 Alabama (1-0) faces Southern Miss #3 Ohio State (1-0) faces Oregon State #4 Notre Dame (1-0) faces Northwestern #5 USC (1-0) has a bye #6 Michigan (1-0) faces Colorado #7 Nebraska (1-0) faces Wisconsin #8 LSU (1-0) faces #16 Texas A&M #9 Houston (2-0) faces Miami-FL #10 UCLA (1-0) has a bye #11 North Carolina State (2-0) faces Clemson #12 Maryland (0-1) faces #19 Florida #13 Arkansas (0-1) faces Oklahoma State #14 Texas A&M (1-0) faces #9 LSU #15 Tennessee (1-0) faces Kansas #16 Florida (1-0) faces #8 Maryland #17 Missouri (1-0) faces Baylor #18 Florida (1-0) face #13 Maryland #19 Penn State (0-1) faces Navy #20 Auburn (1-0) faces Tennessee-Chattanooga Falling out of Top 20: Pittsburgh GAME OF THE WEEK #14 Texas A&M at #8 LSU Newly minted Top 20 team Texas A&M will look to move up in the rankings with a visit to Baton Rouge. The Aggies' wishbone attack will try to crack the solid LSU defense, while the Aggies' top-SWC defense will present an interesting challenge to the Tigers' veer which dismantled Colorado last week. Match up to watch: LSU's speedy Terry Robiskie against the Aggies' Ed Simonini, a ball-hawking linebacker with All-America skills.

Week of 9/21/74
This Week's Major College Scores:
Code:
TOP HEADLINES BARTKOWSKI WINS BATTLE OF TOP QBs Steve Bartkowski's Cal Golden Bears hooked up with Craig Kimball's San Jose State Spartans in a good old fashioned Wild West showdown. Cal won the high-scoring affair 41-27. Bartkowski was 19-of-35 for 307 yards and two scores, while Kimball was 20-of-38 for 326 yards and three scores, but was also picked off by the Golden Bears on three occasions. AUBURN BLASTS CHATTANOOGA The Auburn Tigers had a laughingly easy time of it against the Chattanooga Moccasins, winning by a lopsided 70-10 margin. The Tigers ran for 535 yards in the game, with three runners - Mitzi Jackson (160), Sedrick McIntyre (138) and Rick Neel (104), exceeding 100 yards for the game and QB Phil Gargis adding another 80 yards on the ground. The Tigers first two games - both against lesser competition - have been stellar and their #20 ranking may go up after this strong performance. TIGHT SCORE BELIES EASY WIN BY FIGHTING IRISH #4 Notre Dame downed Northwestern by a score of 20-17, a score much tighter than the game actually felt. Both Northwestern touchdowns came on returns (one kickoff and one interception) while the Fighting Irish outgained the Wildcats 374 yards to 85 and held the ball for 39:45. AGGIES, TIGERS TIED UP In one of the weekend's best games, the #14 Texas A&M Aggies visited #8 LSU and after sixty minutes, the game was tied at fourteen apiece. LSU's Robert Dow - an electrifying return man - demonstrated his ability by returning the game's opening kickoff 101 yards for a score. The game's other three scores all came via the rush and there was no scoring in the fourth quarter. GRIFFIN STREAK STOPPED, BUT BUCKS ROLL ON Archie Griffin's streak of 12-straight 100+ yard games is over as the back was held to 88 yards on 12 carries before leaving the game with a minor injury. In his absence, quarterback Cornelius Greene hauled the ball 26 times for 70 yards. Ohio State downed the visiting Oregon State Beavers 14-0. Bruising fullback Pete Johnson punched in both Buckeye scores on runs of 3 and 7 yards. TEXAS FROSH CAMPBELL RIDES OVER COWBOYS Freshman back Earl Campbell of the Texas Longhorns led his team to a 30-7 win over Wyoming in Austin. Campbell piled up 120 yards and scored a touchdown, after scoring twice in his college debut at Boston College a week ago. Campbell appears to be on his way to supplanting former top back Rosey Leaks, who missed 1973 with an injury after a solid 1972 campaign. Leaks got 15 carries for just 26 yards against Wyoming. WANDERING SOUTHERN MISS NO MATCH FOR CRIMSON TIDE With "The Rock" being renovated, Southern Miss will play all eleven games on the road. Unfortunately for them, one of those was in Tuscaloosa where the #2 ranked Alabama Crimson Tide resides. The Tide made short work of the Golden Eagles, torching them 28-0. Quarterback Richard Todd continued his strong play with a pair of touchdown runs as the Tide piled up 408 yards of total offense to just 131 for the Eagles. N.C. STATE AND CLEMSON PLAY BASEBALL It's not often that a college football game's score could be mistaken for a baseball score, but 3-2 qualifies and that was the final score of North Carolina State's win over Clemson. Coach Lou Holtz's undefeated Wolfpack hooked up in a defensive gem with Red Parker's Tigers. The game was about as even as it could get - with the 1-point score difference and the 'Pack's 161 to 160 edge in yards gained. The Wolfpack is now 3-0 and will remain highly ranked. WOLVERINES TORCH BUFFALOES The #6 ranked University of Michigan Wolverines completely overwhelmed the Colorado Buffaloes to the tune of 56-0. Gordon Bell ran for 145 yards and three touchdowns, Chuck Heater added 130 yards and a pair of scores and the run-happy Wolverines even tossed for touchdown. Michigan piled up 604 yards of total offense - 512 of it on the ground in a complete demolition job. HEISMAN WATCH Michigan's Dennis Franklin rushed for 63 yards and threw for 92 more (and a TD) in the Wolverines' big win over Colorado. Steve Bartkowski was solid (19-35, 305, 2 TDs) for Cal in victory and BYU's Gary Scheide was 23-of-32 for 189 yards and a pair of scores in the Cougars' 23-0 win over Utah St. Among the backs, Archie Griffin had 88 yards in limited action for OSU, while Pittsburgh's sensational soph, Tony Dorsett, racked up 130 yards and a pair of touchdowns in the Panthers' 21-14 win over Georgia Tech. THE TOP 20 POLL #1 Alabama (2-0) - faces Vanderbilt #2 Oklahoma (1-0) - faces Utah State #3 Ohio State (2-0) - faces SMU #4 Michigan (2-0) - faces Navy #5 Notre Dame (2-0) - faces Purdue #6 USC (1-0) - faces Pittsburgh #7 Nebraska (2-0) - faces Northwestern #8 UCLA (1-0) - faces #14 Michigan State #9 LSU (1-0-1) - faces Rice #10 NC State (3-0) - faces Syracuse #11 Texas (2-0) - faces Texas Tech #12 Texas A&M (1-0-1) - faces Washington #13 Auburn (2-0) - faces Tennessee #14 Michigan State (2-0) - faces #8 UCLA #15 Florida (2-0) - faces Mississippi State #16 Missouri (2-0) - faces Arizona State #17 Penn State (1-1) - faces Iowa #18 Houston (2-1) - faces Virginia Tech #19 Illinois (2-0) - faces Washington State #20 BYU (2-0) - faces Iowa State GAME TO WATCH Two of the nation's best backs will square off when Southern Cal visits Pitt. USC's Anthony Davis and Pitt's Tony Dorsett are both explosive backs capable of putting up big numbers. Though the edge in overall talent has to go to the Trojans, the Panthers' home field advantage could be cause for concern for Coach John McKay's team. NCAA STATISTICAL LEADERS Code:

This week's major college scores:
Code:
TOP HEADLINES NEBRASKA "HUSKS" THE WILDCATS #7 Nebraska manhandled the Northwestern Wildcats, running away with a 71-0 decision. The Cornhuskers scored eight touchdowns via the run and quarterback David Humm also threw for a score. Nebraksa racked up 599 yards of total offense while the Wildcats committed six turnovers and were held to 94 yards of total offense. Tony Davis (136 yds) found paydirt three times and John O'Leary (64 yds) punched in twice. CRIMSON TIDE HOLDS OFF CHALLENGE FROM VANDY The Vanderbilt Commodores came into Denny Stadium smelling upset, and played the #1 ranked Alabama Crimson Tide well, holding a 10-7 lead after three quarters of play. The Tide put up ten points via a 3-yard run from Calvin Culliver and a 27-yard FG from Bucky Berrey to win 17-10. SOONERS OUTCLASS UTAH STATE The #2 Oklahoma Sooners completely outclassed Utah State in a matchup at Owen Stadium before more than 60,000 spectators. Heisman-hopeful Joe Washington ran for 111 yards and three touchdowns for the Sooners who outgained Utah State 537-111. MUSTANGS TOUGH CHALLENGE FOR BUCKEYES The #3 Ohio State Buckeyes hosted the SMU Mustangs and found a tough challenge from the Texas-based school. Though Archie Griffin racked up 149 yards and a touchdown for the Buckeyes, the Mustang defense held the potent Ohio State offense to 305 yards on the day. Four SMU turnovers doomed the Mustangs, who were held to just two field goals despite 270 yards of total offense. MICHIGAN TORPEDOES NAVY The #4 Michigan Wolverines are playing the stingiest defense in the nation, and that continued against the U.S. Naval Academy. For the third straight game, the Wolverine defense did not allow a single point - making them the only school in the nation that has not been scored upon this season. The offense wasn't bad either, racking up 42 points against the Middies' defense. QB Dennis Franklin (4-4, 82 yards) tossed for a pair of touchdowns and big back Gordon Bell(15 rushes, 81 yards) ran for two more. BIG TEN'S "THIRD WHEEL" SERVES NOTICE In a conference that is dominated, year-in and year-out by the Ohio State Buckeyes and Michigan Wolverines, a third power has emerged. That power is #14 Michigan State, which improved to 3-0 with a road win over #8 UCLA. The Spartans played a balanced game in Los Angeles, scoring through the air, on the ground and on special teams in upending the favored Bruins. DAVIS AND TROJANS TOP DORSETT'S PANTHERS In a battle of two of the game's top tailbacks, USC's Anthony Davis came out ahead of Pitt's Tony Dorsett, and Davis' #5 Trojans also came out on top of the Panthers, 17-0. Davis rushed for 84 yards on 21 carries while Dorsett found tough going against the USC defense, gaining 66 yards on 20 carries. HEISMAN WATCH Archie Griffin and Joe Washington solidified their positions as the two top backs in the nation with strong performances this week. Michigan's Dennis Franklin may have caught the attention of the voters with a very solid game against Navy. Cal's Steve Bartkowski had a good day for the Golden Bears against Army in a losing effort (16-24, 174 yds, 2 TD) while BYU's Gary Sheide was shaky (12-28, 211 yds, 1 TD, 1 INT) in the Cougars' win over Iowa State. TOP 20 POLL AND NEXT GAME #1 Michigan (3-0) at Stanford #2 Oklahoma (2-0) vs Wake Forest #3 Nebraska (3-0) vs Minnesota #4 Alabama (3-0) at Ole Miss #5 USC (2-0) vs Iowa #6 Michigan State (3-0) vs #10 Notre Dame #7 Florida (3-0) vs #12 LSU #8 Missouri (3-0) at Wisconsin #9 Ohio State (3-0) at Washington St #10 Notre Dame (3-0) at #6 Michigan State #11 Texas A&M (2-0-1) at Kansas #12 LSU (2-0-1) at #7 Florida #13 Auburn (2-1) at Miami-FL #14 Penn State (2-1) at Army #15 Texas (2-1) vs Washington #16 Tennessee (2-1) vs Tulsa #17 Oklahoma State (3-0) at Texas Tech #18 UCLA (2-1) at Utah #19 BYU (3-0) at Colorado State #20 Vanderbilt (2-1) BYE GAME OF THE WEEK #6 Michigan State vs #10 Notre Dame A great matchup between two top 10 teams as the Fighting Irish visit East Lansing. The Michigan State Spartans look very tough, having outscored their opponents 125-27 thus far this season, while Notre Dame has, at times, struggled, but is undefeated. Michigan State is averaging 334.5 yards per game on the ground and 132.9 through the air, while allowing 200.7 rushing and 76.8 passing. Notre Dame is also solid on both sides of the ball, averaging 226.6 per game via the rush and 75.6 through the air, while allowing just 98.6 per game on the ground and 55.7 through the air. THIS WEEK'S MAJOR COLLEGE SCORES
Code:
TOP HEADLINES OKLAHOMA SMASHES WAKE FOREST #2 Oklahoma demolished the Demon Deacons of Wake Forest 62-0 at Owen Stadium. Joe Washington rambled for 144 yards and a touchdown, while Jim Littrell added 103 yards - and four TDs - and Steve Davis piled up 106 yards. FIGHTING IRISH STUN SPARTANS The #10 Notre Dame Fighting Irish traveled to East Lansing and stunned the #6 Michigan State Spartans, rolling to a 20-0 victory. QB Tom Clements ran for 42 yards and a touchdown, and though no Irish back topped the 100-yard mark, collectively they tallied 235 rushing yards. The Spartans outgained the Irish, gaining 289 yards on the ground, but an inability to pick up key first downs doomed the home team. TOP-RANKED WOLVERINES SURVIVE STANFORD A 1-yard run by quarterback Dennis Franklin and a pair of Mike Lantry field goals were all the scoring Michigan could achieve against the Stanford Cardinal. The Cardinal defense held the high-scoring Wolverines to just 13 points and 320 yards of total offense. But the Wolverine defense, which entered the game unscored upon, once again held tough - though they finally allowed some points in a 13-9 victory. WORKHORSE DAVIS SPARKS TROJANS TO VICTORY Tailback Anthony Davis carried the ball 30 times for 103 yards as the #5 USC Trojans downed the Iowa Hawkeyes 21-0. Davis scored one of the two Trojan touchdowns (QB Pat Haden ran for the other), and the defense contributed a safety, with the remaining points coming on two field goals for USC, whose defense - tops in the nation - allowed just 49 yards to the Hawkeyes. GRIFFIN SERVES NOTICE It was only a matter of time, after all. Ohio State's Archie Griffin showed why he's the favorite to win the Heisman this year as he ran for 251 yards and 3 touchdowns in the #9 Buckeyes' 55-10 win over the Washington Huskies. Griffin average 8.9 yards per carry for his 29 rushes and broke off touchdown runs of 63 and 36 yards. BARN-BURNER BOX OF THE WEEK Code:
HEISMAN WATCH OSU's Archie Griffin really stepped up with a huge game against the Huskies. Joe Washington also had a big game. Cal's Steve Bartkowski continued to play almost mistake-free football, with a 18-28, 234 yrd game, but his only TD came via a run and the Golden Bears lost - again. BYU's Gary Sheide really hurt his chances with an atrocious game against Colorado State. Sheide completed just 17 of 40 passes for only 73 yards with no touchdowns and three interceptions. TOP 20 POLL AND NEXT GAME #1 Oklahoma at #20 Texas #2 Michigan vs #11 Michigan State #3 Nebraska vs #10 Missouri #4 USC at Washington State #5 Alabama vs Florida State #6 Florida at #12 Vanderbilt #7 Ohio State vs Wisconsin #8 Notre Dame vs Rice #9 Auburn vs Kentucky #10 Missouri at #3 Nebraska #11 Michigan State at #2 Michigan #12 Vanderbilt vs #6 Florida #13 Texas A&M vs #18 Texas Tech #14 LSU vs #15 Tennessee #15 Tennessee at #14 LSU #16 Syracuse vs Navy #17 San Diego State vs Fresno State #18 Texas Tech at #13 Texas A&M #19 Boston College vs William & Mary #20 Texas vs #1 Oklahoma Big week for Poll turmoil. Several teams dropped out of the top 20 and were replaced by the likes of San Diego State, Texas Tech and Syracuse. Michigan's 13-9 win over Stanford wasn't enough to keep them ahead of Oklahoma, who absolutely crushed Wake Forest. GAME OF THE WEEK #2 Michigan at #11 Michigan State A lot of solid matchups between top 20 teams this week. But the "Battle of Michigan" should be the best of the bunch. Although Michigan is obviously the favorite, the Spartans are no longer an easy win for the Wolverines. Both teams feature strong defenses and capable run-oriented offenses. Should be a good one. TOP HEADLINES TEXAS PULLS OFF HUGE UPSET #20 Texas pulled off a big upset, taking down #1 Oklahoma by a score of 21-17. With big freshman Earl Campbell rumbling for 97 yards, the Longhorns surprisingly scored a pair of touchdowns via the pass, enabling them to win despite being outgained 318-284 and having the Sooners dominate in time of possession, 36:35 to 23:25. Joe Washington of the Sooners gained 80 yards on 15 carries. WOLVERINES TOO MUCH FOR SPARTANS The #2 Michigan Wolverines put a stamp on their claim for the top spot in this week's rankings with a 44-0 spanking of the Michigan State Spartans beforre 82,567 fans at Michigan Stadium. Michigan jumped out right away, putting up 14 points in the first quarter and leading 24-0 at the half. The Wolverines ran for 398 yards in the game, led by Gordon Bell's 127 yards. Dennis Franklin continued his strong play of late, running for 50 yards and going 6-of-8 for 128 yards and a touchdown through the air. The game marked the fourth shutout of the season for the stifling Wolverine defense. #3 HUSKERS TOP #10 MISSOURI Trailing 14-9 to the Missouri Tigers at the half, the Nebraska Cornhuskers showed resilience in coming back with a strong second half performance to win 22-14. Tom Osborne's team racked up over 40 minutes in time of possession. #7 BUCKEYES STUNNED BY BADGERS Before a crowd of over 83,000 at Ohio Stadium, the #7 Ohio State Buckeyes were stunned by Big-10 rival Wisconsin, 24-21. Archie Griffin had 119 yards rushing and a touchdown, and quarterback Cornelius Greene had a great game with a 133-yard rushing day, but it wasn't enough as the Badgers took advantage of the lone Ohio State turnover for the go-ahead TD with seven minutes left to play. #5 ALABAMA HAS NO PROBELM WITH FLORIDA STATE Calvin Culliver found paydirt two times and racked up 75 yards on 16 carries to lead the Crimson Tide to an easy 34-0 win over the visiting Florida State Seminoles. TROJANS TOP WASHINGTON STATE #4 USC ran up a 28-0 lead at Rogers Field against Washington State, and held on for 35-21 win over the Cougars. The Trojan ground game was in high gear as Anthony Davis racked up 142 yards and a touchdown and Allen Carter also topped the century mark with 122 yards. Soph Ricky Bell notched 42 yards on 5 carries and QB Pat Haden chipped in with 43 yards and a touchdown rushing and completed both of his two passes for 89 yards. VANDY CONTINUES TO BE DANDY The surprise of the SEC continues to the strong play of the #12 Vanderbilt Commodores. Vandy took down #6 Florida at Dudley Field, by a score of 14-3. The Commodores held the normally efficient Gator offense to just 120 yards while piling up 302 yards of their own. Senior back Jimmy O'Rourke showed his surgically repaired knee is just fine as he piled up 104 yards on 21 carries. RICHMOND SCORES 90 ON BALL STATE The Richmond Spiders spun quite a web on Ball State this weekend. Led by quarterback Harry Knight, who threw six touchdown passes (and four picks), Richmond racked up 558 yards of total offense. Knight completed 28 of 41 throws for 342 yards. The Spiders' ground game was led by sophomore Ed Kreilis' 81 yards and 3 touchdowns. BARN-BURNER BOX OF THE WEEK Code:
HEISMAN WATCH Joe Washington and Archie Griffin continued to be the top two candidates for the prestigious award as both young men showed another consistent effort. Anthony Davis of USC also had a strong Saturday. Steve Bartkowski (see Barn Burner Box of the week) continued to shine while his Golden Bears continued to struggle, losing 20-19 to Oregon. BYU's Gary Sheide continues to put up impressive - and inconsistent - numbers with a 21-of-30, 310 yards and 1 TD game marred by another three interceptions. TOP 20 POLL AND NEXT GAME #1 Michigan (5-0) at Wisconsin #2 Oklahoma (3-1) at colorado #3 Nebraska (5-0) at Kansas #4 USC (4-0) at Oregon #5 Alabama (5-0) at Tennessee #6 Auburn (4-1) vs Georgia Tech #7 Notre Dame (5-0) vs Army #8 Texas A&M (4-0-1) vs TCU #9 Florida (4-1) at Florida State #10 Vanderbilt (3-1) at Georgia #11 LSU (3-1-1) at Kentucky #12 Ohio State (4-1) vs Indiana #13 Texas (4-1) vs Arkansas #14 San Diego State (3-0) vs San Jose State #15 Syracuse (5-1) at Penn State #16 Missouri (3-2) at Oklahoma State #17 Michigan State (3-2) at #20 Illinois #18 Texas Tech (3-1) vs Arizona #19 UCLA (4-1) vs Washington State #20 Illinois (5-0) vs #17 Michigan State Another big week for changes in the poll. Oklahoma's loss and Michigan's big win saw them swap places - again. Ohio State dropped to #12 following their loss to Wisconsin and another Big-10 Team (Illinois) cracked the Top 20. GAME OF THE WEEK It's not a top twenty matchup (there's only one of those next week), but the Florida-Florida State matchup should be a grudge matchup worthy of attention. The #9 ranked Gators average 209.5 yards per game on the ground, but just 60.5 via the pass. The Seminoles are a passing team and if there's a weakness on the Florida team, it is in the secondary. Darrell Mudra's squad (2-3) is already better than they were in '73 when they went 0-11. QB Ron Coppess has been steady, but unspectacular, completing 54 of 88 passes for 718 yards with 5 TDs and 3 picks. NCAA STATISTICAL LEADERS Tampa quarterback Freddie Solomon becomes the season's first 1000-yard rusher as his total stands at 1034 for the season. He also leads the nation in rushing touchdowns, reaching the end zone 9 times already. As a passer, he's thrown for 344 yards. Pro scouts project the tall, thin and speedy Solomon to fit somewhere as a wide receiver. Code:

Hmmm, OU probably should have dropped more after losing to Texas. Haffner's poll logic can cause you to scratch your head at times.

OTHER MAJOR COLLEGE SCORES Code:
TOP HEADLINES MICHIGAN CONTINUES TO ROLL The #1 Michigan Wolverines continue to play stifling defense, pitching their fifth shutout in six games this season, as they whitewashed Wisconsin 16-0 at Camp Randall Stadium. Gordon Bell ran up 157 yards on just 17 rushes including a touchdown run of 73 yards. The Badgers, who upset Ohio State last week, turned the ball over three times, which turned out to be the difference. TENNESEE UPSETS 'BAMA The large crowd of over 54,000 at Neyland Stadium got a treat as the Tennesse Volunteers dominated the #5 Alabama Crimson Tide by a score of 37-10. The usually potent Crimson Tide offense was held to just 228 total yards. Meanwhile Tennessee's offense, capably handled by scrambling quarterback Condredge Holloway, churned out 373 yards. Stanley Morgan ran for 20 times for an even 100 yards and Holloway rushed for a touchdown and threw for another. NOTRE DAME DOMINATES ARMY The nation's best defense, that of #7 Notre Dame, dominated the Army Cadets, allowing them just 139 yards of offense in a 34-0 blowout. Wayne Bullock had a 100-yard game on the ground for the Irish. WASHINGTON SHINES AS SOONER DOWN COLORADO Joe Washington continues to make a strong case for Heisman consideration, racking up 128 yards and a pair of scores on 14 carries in #2 Oklahoma's 28-10 win over the Buffaloes at Colorado's Folsom Field. Jim Littrell pitched in with 53 yards and two TDs of his own for the Sooners. NEBRASKA TOPS KANSAS The #3 Nebraska Cornhuskers continued their season of quiet excellence, winning on the road at Kansas, 21-14. Tony Davis led the way with 90 yards rushing for Tom Osborne's crew. LaVurne Smith was a bright spot for the Jayhawks as the tailback racked up 98 yards on the ground. HOOSIERS NOT GAME ENOUGH TO TOP BUCKEYES Coach Lee Corso's Indiana Hoosiers were game for their big matchup with #12 Ohio State. Corso's top back, Courtney Snyder ripped the OSU defense for 168 yards on 19 carries, a good comparison for top OSU back (and leading Heisman-candidate) Archie Griffin (25 rush, 152 yards). But the Buckeyes just had too much offense for the Hoosiers. Buckeye QB Cornelius Greene ran for 126 yards and a touchdown and was perfect on his four passes for 61 more. The final was 38-10, but for an Indiana team which finished last in the Big-10 in 1973, it was a step up to be competitive against one of the conference's top teams. TROJANS FALL TO DUCKS Despite getting another solid game from tailback Anthony Davis (23 rush, 136 yds, 1 TD), the fourth-ranked USC Trojans took a tough road loss, 31-28 at the hand of the Oregon Ducks at Autzen Stadium. Oregon tallied 24 points in the second half after trailing 14-7 at the midway point. Ducks' quarterback Norv Turner was perfect on eight passes, racking up an incredible 252 yards for an average of 31.5 yards per pass including an 83-yard pass for a TD in the first quarter and a second TD with just 1:37 remaining to give the Ducks the win. BARN-BURNER BOX OF THE WEEK Code:
HEISMAN WATCH Archie Griffin continues to be the odds-on favorite for the award as he added 152 yards to his total for the season. Joe Washington of Oklahoma also had a big game, as did Anthony Davis of USC. Steve Bartkowski had a down week (11-25 143 yds 1 TD) but did not throw an interception. BYU's Gary Sheide had a good week against Texas-El Paso (21-35, 261 yds, 2 TD) and was mistake free in the Cougars' 30-7 win. TOP 20 POLL AND NEXT GAME #1 Michigan (6-0) vs Minnesota #2 Oklahoma (4-1) vs Kansas State #3 Nebraska (6-0) vs #17 Oklahoma State #4 Notre Dame (6-0) vs Miami-FL #5 Auburn (5-1) vs Florida State #6 Texas A&M (5-0-1) at Baylor #7 LSU (3-1-2) BYE #8 Florida (5-1) vs Duke #9 Alabama (5-1) vs TCU #10 Tennessee (4-2) vs Clemson #11 Texas (5-1) at Rice #12 Ohio State (5-1) at Northwestern #13 Texas Tech (4-1-1) at SMU #14 USC (4-1) vs Oregon State #15 Syracuse (5-2) BYE #16 Michigan State (4-2) vs Purdue #17 Oklahoma State (4-1) at #3 Nebraska #18 Oregon (5-1) at Washington #19 UCLA (5-1) at California #20 BYU (5-1) at Arizona GAME OF THE WEEK #17 Oklahoma State at #3 Nebraska A Big-Eight rivlary game between two of the nation's top teams. Tom Osborne's Cornhuskers sit atop the conference standings with a perfect 6-0 record and have outscored their opposition 235-72. Coach Jim Stanley's Cowboys are 4-1 despite outscoring their opponents by only 65-40. Though not as heralded as other Big-Eight QBs such as Kansas State's Steve Grogan or David Humm of Nebraska, Oklahoma State's sophomore signal caller Charlie Weatherbee has looked solid thus far. The homefield - and talent - favor the Huskers, but the Cowboys could make things interesting. NCAA STATISTICAL LEADERS Code:

TOP HEADLINES TOP-RANKED WOLVERINES SHUTOUT YET ANOTHER OPPONENT The Michigan Wolverines have allowed just nine points this season - and they were all scored by Stanford in a 13-9 loss. In their other six games, Michigan's stingy defense has not allowed a single point. This week's victim was Big Ten rival Minnesota, which fell 49-0 to the Wolverines. The Wolverines allowed just 169 yards to the Golden Gophers, and 91 of those were by Rick Upchurch. On the offensive side of the ball, Gordon Bell had another solid game, rushing for 161 yards and a touchdown to put himself in the mix for the Heisman. Even better was fullback Chuck Heater, who barrelled through the Gopher defense for 188 yards and a pair of touchdowns. SOONERS SHUTOUT KANSAS STATE #2 Oklahoma make be taking a page from the top-ranked Wolverines as they also shutout their opponent this week, Big Eight rival Kansas State 13-0 before a large crowd at Owen Stadium. Joe Washington rushed for 113 yards, but the game's lone touchdown was scored by Steve Davis who rushed for 64 yards on the day. Kansas State QB Steve Grogan, probably the best pro QB prospect in the conference, struggled against the Sooner defense, completing 11 of 22 tosses for 107 yards and being intercepted twice. CORNHUSKERS ALSO PITCH SHUTOUT The third-ranked Nebraska Cornhuskers also showcased defense this weekend, shutting out #17 ranked Oklahoma State, 16-0. Tony Davis and John O'Leary combined for 183 yards rushing. Linebackers Ron Pruitt and Mike Fultz each got to the quarterback for a sack and the Cowboys were held to 123 yards rushing and were unable to complete any of their eight pass attempts. NOTRE DAME BLOWS AWAY HURRICANES #4 Notre Dame had an easy time of it this week against the University of Miami-Florida Hurricanes, winning by a lopsided 35-7 margin. As usual, Ara Parseghian's crew had the ground attack in full force, rushing 57 times for 331 yards and only going to the air seven times (with 5 completions for 40 yards). Big fullback Wayne Bullock led the attack with 122 yards on 22 carries. QB Tom Clements was solid with 48 yards rushing and a touchdown and completing 4 of 6 passes for 26 yards. BARN BURNER BOX OF THE WEEK Code:
HEISMAN WATCH Ohio State's Archie Griffin ran 18 times for 124 yards and a pair of touchdowns in OSU's 37-7 win over Northwestern. Oklahoma's Joe Washington notched 113 yards on 16 carries. USC's Anthony Davis ran for 108 yards on 23 carries and 1 touchdown. Gordon Bell of Michigan has jumped into the mix lately and chimed in this week with 161 yards on 22 carries and a touchdown. Cal's Steve Bartkowski continued his impressive play with a 17-for-24 day for 260 yards, 3 touchdowns and an interception in the Golden Bears' 28-17 upset of UCLA. The clock has run out on BYU's Gary Sheide - another poor game (17-27, 92 yds, 0 TD, 1 Int) has essentially doomed his chances of winning the award. TOP 20 POLL AND NEXT GAME #1 Michigan (7-0) at Indiana #2 Nebraska (7-0) at Colorado #3 Oklahoma (5-1) at Iowa State #4 Auburn (6-1) at #6 Florida #5 Alabama (6-1) vs Mississippi State #6 Florida (6-1) vs #4 Auburn #7 Ohio State (6-1) vs #19 Illinois #8 Notre Dame (7-0) at Navy #9 Texas (6-1) vs SMU #10 Texas A&M (6-0) vs Arkansas #11 USC (5-1) vs California #12 Texas Tech (5-1-1) at Rice #13 LSU (3-1-2) vs Ole Miss #14 Tennessee (5-2) BYE #15 Vanderbilt (4-2) at Army #16 Michigan State (5-2) at Wisconsin #17 Syracuse (5-2) vs Pittsburgh #18 Oklahoma State (4-2) vs Kansas #19 Illinois (6-1) at #7 Ohio State #20 Penn State (6-1) vs Maryland GAME OF THE WEEK #4 Auburn at #6 Florida. This one will have a huge impact on the SEC championship as well as the top ten race. The loser will essentially be out of the running for the conference title, while the winner will have an edge as the season comes down the stretch. Both teams are very strong and this should be a tight one. NCAA STATISTICAL LEADERS Code:

TOP HEADLINES SOONERS STUMBLE IN AMES, ESCAPE WITH TIE The #3 Oklahoma Sooners were shocked in the first half by the lightly-regarded Iowa State Cyclones, falling behind 19-0 at the half before an ecstatic crowd at Clyde Williams Field in Ames, Iowa. Oklahoma coach Barry Switzer must have torn into his team at halftime, because the Sooners came out fast and furious in the second half, scoring 19 third quarter points - two of them on a safety, to tie the game at 19 entering the final frame. Both teams managed a field goal (Iowa State had FIVE in the game) in the final quarter, as the game ended in a 22-22 tie. For more on this game, check out the "Barn Burner Box of the Week" after the news. TOP-RANKED MICHIGAN NEARLY UPSET IN INDIANA The #1 ranked Michigan Wolverines had their hands full this week with the Indiana Hoosiers, a team that went 0-11 last season, but is rejuvenated this year under Coach Lee Corso. Michigan led 14-0 at the half, but the Hoosiers ran off three scores in the second half, to lead 21-14 with 12 minutes left in the game. The Wolverines made a late drive, culminating in a touchdown with 51 seconds left to play, then Coach Bo Schembechler boldly went for the win, successfully completing the two point conversion to keep Michigan undefeated and atop the poll. AUBURN SQUEEZES PAST FLORIDA In the flip-side of the Michigan-Indiana game, the sixth-ranked Florida Gators went for two with 1:19 to go, down by a point, and failed to convert, resulting in a 14-13 loss to the fourth-ranked Auburn Tigers. Don Gaffney threw two touchdowns for the Gators and was 9-13 for 113 yards for the day. Sedrick McIntyre starred for the Tigers, rushing for 91 yards. GRIFFIN HAS BIG DAY AS BUCKEYES DODGE ILLINI Archie Griffin had a big day carrying the mail for the #7 Ohio State Buckeyes, gaining 152 yards on 29 carries to lead the Buckeyes to a 27-24 win over the #19 Fighting Illini of Illinois. Despite Griffin's workmanlike performance, the Bucks needed a 47-yard run by Pete Johnson and a kickoff return TD to edge the Illini. SOPH DORSETT GOES FOR 187 AS PITT UP-ENDS ORANGEMEN Pittsburgh's sensational sophomore tailback, Tony Dorsett, rank for 187 yards on 21 carries, including a 23-yard touchdown scamper, as the Panthers upset the #17 Syracuse Orangemen 31-12 before 27,000 stunned fans at Archbold Stadium in Syracuse. TOP HEADLINES LONGHORNS CRUSHED BY BAYLOR The #9-ranked Texas Longhorns ran into a buzzsaw against the Baylor Bears, falling 41-20. The Bears' defense held freshman sensation Earl Campbell to just 52 yards on 18 carries and limited the Texas offense to 238 total yards while the offense rolled up 442 yards. Senior QB Neal Jeffrey threw for 285 yards and a pair of scores. Baylor's Philip Kent ran a kick back 88 yards for a TD as well. WOLVERINES REMAIN UNDEFEATED Speedy sophomore Rob Lytle ripped off 109 yards on just 11 carries and scored one of two Michigan ground touchdowns as the top-ranked Wolverines remained unbeaten with a 24-17 road win over the Illini at Memorial Stadium in Champaign-Urbana. Dennis Franklin also tossed touchdown, hooking up for a 31-yarder with split-end Jim Smith. The Michigan defense was sturdy as usual, allowing just 104 yards on 45 rushes to the Illini. The Illini fared little better with the pass as QB Jeff Hollenbach threw for 154 yards, but completed just 7 of 18 passes. HUSKERS HAVE NO PROBLEMS WITH CYCLONES The #2 Nebraska Cornhuskers had an easy win this week against the Iowa State Cyclones, winning 37-3. QB David Humm completed 10 of 14 throws for 168 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Two Husker backs topped 100 yards as Don Westbrook piled up 153 yards on 12 carries and John O'Leary garnered 111 on 16 tries. Top back Monte Anthony nearly joined the club, rushing for 99 yards on 17 carries. Westbrook scored twice - once on an electric 73-yard run late in the third quarter and earlier on a 13-yard hookup with Humm. ALABAMA CRUSHES LSU Calvin Culliver ran for 207 of Alabama's 450 yards of rushing as the #6 Crimson Tide swamped the Bayou Bengals of LSU at Denny Stadium, 49-3. Culliver punched in for four touchdowns, Willie Shelby (10 carries, 75 yards) found paydirt twice and James Taylor scored the other touchdown for Alabama. BUCKEYES TOP SPARTANS The tenth-ranked Ohio State Buckeyes escaped East Lansing with a 21-13 win over the #13 Michigan State Spartans in a top Big Ten matchup. Though the Spartans held leading Heisman candidate Archie Griffin to 76 yards, Buckeye quarterback Cornelius Greene ran all over them, piling up 134 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Greene also tossed a 46-yard touchdown pass to tight end Bubba France. Michigan State managed to run for 313 yards, but an ineffective passing game that committed three turnovers doomed the Spartans. WILDCATS SINK COMMODORES In a wild one at Commonwealth Stadium, the Kentucky Wildcats topped #14 Vanderbilt, 32-25. Sonny Collins had a great day on the ground, rushing for 165 yards - a large chunk of which came on an electrifying 84-yard touchdown scamper in the second quarter. Mike Fanuzzi and Cliff Hite each tossed touchdown passes for the Wildcats, who improved to 6-2-1 on the season. The Commodores dropped to 5-3 with the loss. TOP HEADLINES TOP-RANKED TRIO CONTINUES TO ROLL The success for the three top-ranked programs in the country continued this week as #1 Michigan, #2 Nebraska and #3 Alabama all had solid wins. The top-ranked Wolverines handled Purdue 24-16 with Gary Heater scoring all three touchdowns. The #2 Cornhuskers rode roughshod over Kansas State, 43-17 as they piled up 349 yards of rushing and QB David Humm was 8 of 10 for 66 yards and a score passing. The third-ranked Crimson Tide easily dispatched the Miami (Fl) Hurricanes 27-0. Richard Todd connected with Ozzie Newsome for a 26-yard score to open things for the Tide; Calvin Culliver ran for 107 yards and a score for Alabama. SOONERS STUMBLE AGAIN - THIS TIME ITS THE JAYHAWKS The Oklahoma Sooners, pre-season favorites for the top spot in the rankings, fell for the second time this season, this time losing to the lightly-regarded Kansas Jayhawks, by a score of 12-9 in Lawrence, Kansas. Joe Washington ran for 60 yards to lead the Sooners, who were outgained 375 yards to 228. A whopping 237 of those yards came via the legs of Laverne Smith who carried 31 times, averaging 7.6 per rush. Billy campfield scored the lone TD for the Jayhawks. KENTUCKY MUZZLES THE GATORS The #23-ranked Kentucky Wildcats showed the depth of the Southeastern Conference as they defeated SEC rival and #6-ranked Florida Gators 24-7 at Commonwealth Stadium. QB Mike Fanuzzi ran for 104 yards and a pair of scores for the Wildcats, who held the usually potent Gator offense to 212 yards of total offense. PANTHERS HAND IRISH FIRST LOSS OF SEASON An undefeated season for Ara Parseghian's Notre Dame Fighting Irish fell by the wayside as the #9 Irish were held without an offensive point in a 6-2 game against the Pittsburgh Panthers. In a tight defensive struggle with neither team scoring a touchdown, the Irish scored first on a safety with 38 seconds left in the first quarter. A 42-yard field goal at the end of the half gave the Panthers a 3-2 lead and they added another field goal in the fourth. Overall the Panthers garnered just 95 yards of total offense while the Irish managed 160. The stingy Notre Dame defense held Pittsburgh's electric sophomore Tony Dorsett to no yards on 23 attempts, but were unable to get their own offense going in suffering their first loss against eight victories on the year. PACIFIC LOSES FINAL GAME OF THE SEASON After starting 10-0 to garner the first Top 25 ranking for the team in history, the University of the Pacific fell to the Wyoming Cowboys, 17-14 to end the season 10-1. The Tigers' breathtaking back, Willard Harrell, had a solid game, rushing for 145 yards on 21 carries and a touchdown, but it wasn't enough to top the Cowboys. Coach Fritz Shurmur got 223 yards through the air from the Wyoming QBs, Jim Trusso and Rick Costello and a varied ground attack added 184 more, proving too much for the Pacific Tigers to handle. BC TRAMPLES SYRACUSE The #24 ranked Boston College Eagles trounced the Syracuse Orangemen 56-24 before an ecstatic crowd at Alumni Stadium. Keith Barnette rumbled for 148 yards and three touchdowns on 23 carries while one of the nation's best quarterbacks, Mike Kruczek went 15-of-22 for 204 yards and a score. In all the Eagles garnered 489 yards of offense to 219 for the Orangemen. BARN BURNER BOX OF THE WEEK Wisconsin's Gregg Bolig tossed a touchdown pass to Ken Starch with :14 seconds remaining, which proved the difference in a wild 33-31 Big Ten shootout with Northwestern at Dyche Stadium. Code:
HEISMAN WATCH It's back after a short hiatus! Archie Griffin continues to be the odds-on favorite for the award as he is second in the nation among major program's rushers with 1496 yards rushing, and leads the nation in scoring with 15 touchdowns. The top big-school ground gainer, Indiana's Courtney Snyder is receiving some buzz for his numbers - 1499 yards on 300 carries with 13 TDs. USC's Anthony Davis has strong stats: 254 rushes for 1154 yards and 10 scores, while the Sooners' Joe Washington has fallen off in recent weeks and has not yet topped 1000 yards. Among QBs, California's Steve Bartkowski is the top candidate. His numbers: 155-272, 2280 yards, 15 TDs and 5 Ints. Boston College's Mike Kruczek is 145-220 for 1804 yards, 9 TDs but 13 Ints. This is a great thread, but I now really want to get hold of a copy of the game.
I've been onto the website where you can buy it but it seems ridiculously complex to order it, especially as I don't live in the U.S. As a British based College Football fan it would be impractical to phone the company or send off for the game by postal mail. I was wondering whether they had any system in place that would allowed me to pay for the product safely via the internet such as Paypal, and whether the game could instead be delivered electronically. It seems to me that the creator is risking losing out on a lot of potential revenue by not having a decent web designer or proper secure ordering system on his site. Anyway, keep up the dynasty report, it's a good read. Last edited by BlackCats101 : 01-07-2008 at 06:12 AM. |

I've had the game for probably 15 years and in all that time, he's only upgraded it a couple, maybe three times. It's good for doing this type of replay (although you do have to jump through some hoops to get it done, once you figure out the workflow it's not too bad), but I think it only comes with the most recent season - for the older ones you can pay (which ends up being a LOT of money eventually) or try to trade. I have almost all of his games (even tennis and track and field), but like I said, I bought them a looooong time ago. People have been almost begging LH to go to a Windows version or even update the sim (it still has a few strange gameplay-related bugs), update his site, etc, but it hasn't happened yet, so I'm skeptical as to whether it ever will. Glad you're enjoying the read!

TOP HEADLINES BUCKEYES KNOCK OFF TOP-RANKED WOLVERINES Before a huge crowd at Ohio Stadium, the #6 Ohio State Buckeyes defeated the #1-ranked Michigan Wolverines 14-7 in one of the season's biggest contests. Archie Griffin solidified his status as the top candidate for the Heisman as he rumbled through the stingy Michigan defense for 139 yards on 19 carries and scored both OSU touchdowns. Gordon Bell scored Michigan's only touchdown on a 1-yard run early in the fourth and finished with 67 yards on 14 carries. Neither team turned the ball over in a closely fought game that puts the Buckeyes in position to win the Big Ten and claim a spot in the Rose Bowl. The game also has huge implications on the national championship picture. SOONERS TOP CORNHUSKERS In another game with huge national title implications, the #5 Oklahoma Sooners topped the #2 Nebraska Cornhuskers, winning 31-14 and stunning a sellout crowd at Nebraska's Memorial Stadium. Oklahoma raced out to a 17-0 lead, only to see the Huskers roar back to pull within 17-14. But two touchdowns late in the second quarter put the game out of reach as neither team managed to put a point on the board in the second half. OU's Joe Washington ran for 86 yards and a touchdown and Steve Davis added a pair of short TD runs for the Sooners. With both #1 Michigan and #2 Nebraska losing, it should be an interesting poll this week. UCLA TOPS USC In their annual rivalry game, the UCLA Bruins topped #8 USC, 17-12 at the LA Coliseum. The Bruins earned the victory by limiting the effectiveness of USC's ground game, especially tailback Anthony Davis, who was held to 82 yards on 32 carries, an average of just 2.4 per carry. Russel Charles led the Bruins' ground attack with 63 yards and a TD on 12 carries and QB Jeff Dankworth tossed a 27-yard TD pass to tight end Gene Blaymaier. Ecstatic Bruin coach Dick Vermeil, in his first season with UCLA, was carried off the field by his players. WILDCATS CONTINUE TO IMPRESS The #23 Kentucky Wildcats continued their impressive play, again knocking off a ranked opponent. This week's victim was #11 Tennessee, which fell to UK by a score of 17-3. QB Mike Fanuzzi had another solid day running the ball for Kentucky, chalking up a team-best 73 yards on 18 carries. Sonny Collins carried for 70 yards and a score, and the other TD was scored by Steve Campassi, who tallied 66 yards for the 'Cats. Back-to-back wins over then-#6 Florida and Tennessee should be enough to impress the pollsters, but that remains to be seen. BARN-BURNER BOX OF THE WEEK A 35-yard field goal by Rafael Septien with 1:28 remaining to play was the difference in this week's wild shootout between San Jose State and Southwest Louisiana. QB Craig Kimball was impressive for San Jose State in a losing effort. Code:
HEISMAN WATCH Archie Griffin continues to be the odds-on favorite for the award as his impressive statistics continue to pile up. He's rushed for 1635 yards (tops among major college runners) on 248 carries (6.6 avg) and 17 TDs - including 139 yards and a pair of scores in this week's upset of #1 Michigan. Other top backs: Laverne Smith, Kansas: 255 rush, 1575 yds, 6.2 avg, 10 TD Courtney Snyder, Indiana: 323 rush, 1560 yds, 4.8 avg, 13 TD Anthony Davis, USC: 288 rush, 1235 yds, 4.3 avg, 10 TD Among wideouts, California's Steve Rivera stands above the competition. The first receiver to tally 1000 yards this season, Rivera's stats are impressive: 55 rec, 1000 yds, 18.2 avg, 6 TD. Another darkhorse candidate is Tulsa's Steve Largent. He's pulled in 49 receptions for 827 yards and 3 TDs. Playing for a smaller school hurts his candidacy. The QB crop is thin, but the man throwing to Rivera leads the list: Steve Bartkowski leads the nation in passer efficiency rating at 137.6. He's completed 171 of 300 passes for 2493 yards and 16 TDs with just 6 interceptions. Other top QBs: Dennis Franklin, Michigan: 34-of-63, 594 yds, 5 TD, 3 Int, 146.2 rating, 312 yards rushing, 3 TD Gary Scheide, BYU: 203-of-341, 2216 yds, 12 TD, 17 Int, 111.6 rating Freddie Solomon, Tampa: 293 rush, 1952 yds, 6.7 avg, 18 TD; 51-of-130, 617 yds, 1 TD, 5 Int, 67.5 rating Like Largent, Solomon is hurt by playing at a smaller program. His lackluster passing also makes him a longshot for the award. TOP 25 POLL AND NEXT GAME This week's poll report includes the team's ratings and strength of schedule. The strong schedules of Michigan and Nebraska keep both teams in their previous spots despite losses this week. Code:
GAME OF THE WEEK Take your pick: #3 Alabama vs #4 Auburn is the probably the week's biggest - a huge game with big, big SEC and national championship implications. Plus they hate each other. #5 Oklahoma vs #21 Oklahoma State. The Sooners are riding high after knocking off the #2 Cornhuskers and would like nothing better than to cap the season with a win over their in-state rivals. Still looking? How about #11 USC vs # 8 Notre Dame? Two ranked teams with grand traditions locking horns in their annual grudge match. Oh yeah - there's also #14 Texas A&M vs #15 Texas, and #12 Vanderbilt vs #13 Tennessee - both big in-state rivalries to help the '74 regular season end with a bang. NCAA STATISTICAL LEADERS Code:

Army's Willie Thigpen opened the scoring with a 2-yard run in the second quarter. Phil Poirier answered for the Middies with a TD pass just before the half and Navy forged ahead with the game's final score, a 2-yard run by Ed Goodwin. Because Nebraska wasn't the Big 8 champion - Oklahoma was. Oklahoma was 5-1-1 in conference play and Nebraska was 5-2 (plus OU beat the Huskers head to head). Just because the Sooners are on probation and ineligible for a bowl game doesn't make Nebraska the conference champions. A Sugar Bowl bid against #5 Auburn is still pretty nice for the Huskers.

1974 Liberty Bowl
I'm going to post the Bowl Games one-by-one. First up: the Liberty Bowl
LIBERTY BOWL RECAP December 16, 1974 - Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium, Memphis, Tennessee #25 Houston Cougars, Independent (7-4) - Coach: Bill Yeoman, 13th season with team vs #14 Tennessee Volunteers, SEC (7-4) - Coach: Bill Battle, 5th season with team In a stadium packed with partisans of the Tennessee Volunteers, the Houston Cougars overcame six turnovers and won a sloppily played Liberty Bowl 14-13. Houston opened the scoring on a first quarter 19-yard run by Marshall Johnson, the only touchdown the Cougars would score. The extra point attempt failed. The Volunteers answered with a 27-yard pass by Condredge Holloway to Stanley Morgan, but also failed to convert the extra point, tying the game at six. A safety on a stuffed run in the end zone near the end of the half gave Houston an 8-6 lead at the break. On the first punt of the second half, the speedy Morgan put Tennessee up with an 88-yard touchdown return - and this time the kick was good, making it 13-8. A pair of fourth quarter field goals proved the difference however, as the Cougars won the game by just a point, despite outgaining the Vols, 386 to 169. GAME MVP: RB Reggie Cherry, Houston BOXSCORE Code:

TANGERINE BOWL RECAP
December 21, 1974 - Tangerine Bowl Stadium, Orlando, Florida Miami (OH) Redskins, MAC Champions (5-3-2) - Coach: Dick Crum, 1st season with team vs #17 Kentucky Wildcats, SEC 3rd (8-2-1) - Coach: Fran Curci, 2nd season with team The Miami of Ohio Redskins, champions of the Mid-American Conference, stunned the highly-regarded #17 Kentucky Wildcats of the powerful Southeastern Conference by a score of 14-6 in the 19 Tangerine Bowl. The only scoring thru the fourth came on a pair of field goals by Ron Pierce of Kentucky, making it 7-6 entering the final quarter. With 11:18 left to play, Carpenter broke through the line and rumbled 33 yards to paydirt, for the final margin. His 80 total yards and two TDs garnered him Most Valuable Player honors GAME MVP: RB Rob Carpenter, Miami (OH) BOXSCORE Code:

December 23, 1974 - Astrodome, Houston, Texas #22 Texas Tech Red Raiders, SWC 3rd (8-2-1) - Coach: Jim Carlen, 5th season with team vs Arizona State Sun Devils, WAC-2nd (8-4) - Coach: Frank Kush, 17th season with team With the coach's son providing most of the scoring, the Arizona State Sun Devils defeated the Texas Tech Red Raiders, 13-8 in the 19 edition of the Bluebonnet Bowl. Kicker Frank Kush, Jr. booted a pair of field goals and tacked an extra point onto his team's only touchdown giving him seven of the Sun Devils' thirteen points. Sun Devil signal-caller Dennis Sproul earned MVP honors for tossing the game's only TD - a 24-yarder to wingback Morris Owens. Sproul finished 9-of-19 for 165 yards and the touchdown. Texas Tech was kept out of the end zone by the Sun Devils defense, managing a pair of field goals and a safety for their eight points. GAME MVP: QB Dennis Sproul, Arizona State BOXSCORE Code:

SUN BOWL RECAP
December 28, 1974 - Sun Bowl Stadium, El Paso, Texas #19 Texas A&M Aggies, SWC 2nd (8-2-1) - Coach: Emory Bellard, 3rd season with team vs #13 Vanderbilt Commodores, SEC-4th (8-3) - Coach: Steve Sloan, 2nd season with team The Texas A&M Aggies used 319 yards of rushing to overpower the Vanderbilt Commodores and win the 1974 Sun Bowl before a large crowd in El Paso, Texas. Only the Rose Bowl has a longer history than the Sun Bowl, and the Texas A&M faithful turned out in droves to support the Aggies. Both Bubba Beans and Steve Sams ran for well over 100 yards, with Sams scoring two touchdowns for Old Army. The third TD also came on the ground, scored by third back Skip Walker. For the Aggie fans who had made the trip from College Station, this was a grand old time. For Vandy, it was a disappointment after a surprisingly strong season. Only a 50-yard scamper by Adolph Groves prevented a shutout at the hands of the stingy Aggie defense. GAME MVP: RB Steve Sams, Texas A&M BOXSCORE Code:

FIESTA BOWL RECAP
December 28, 1974 - Sun Devil Stadium, Tempe, Arizona #24 Washington Huskies, PAC-8 3rd (6-4-1) - Coach: Jim Owens, 18th season with team vs Colorado State Buffaloes, WAC Champs (7-3) - Coach: Sark Arslanian, 2nd season with team The 24th ranked Washington Huskies, playing their final game under longtime coach Jim Owens, were unable to defeat the champions of the Western Athletic Conference Colorado State Buffaloes in the 1974 Fiesta Bowl. The final score was 33-21 and though the Huskies created four turnovers while committing just one of their own, the high-octane Buffs offense was too much for them to handle. Junior QB Mark Driscoll was on fire for Colorado State, tossing two TD passes en route to a stellar 443-yard day on 22-of-37 passing. WR Willie Miller caught 8 balls for an incredible 289 yards and a touchdown, earning MVP kudos. Tailback Ron Harris ran for 128 yards and a TD, and the Buffs also scored on a 64-yard punt return by Carl Bunch. At the end of the day, the Buffs offense had racked up 588 yards of total offense. GAME MVP: WR Willie Miller, Colorado State BOXSCORE Code:

Maryland QB Bob Avellini tossed 201 yards, but saw Craig Penrose of the Aztecs throw for 233 - 71 on a 3rd quarter touchdown strike to wideout Tim Thorn. Louis Carter had a great day on the ground for the Terps, scoring a TD and piling up 115 yards on 24 carries to earn MVP honors. GAME MVP: RB Louis Carter, Maryland BOXSCORE Code:

GATOR BOWL RECAP
December 30, 1974 - Gator Bowl Stadium, Jacksonville, Florida #7 Missouri Tigers, Big 8-3rd (7-4) - Coach: Al Onofrio, 4th season with team vs #9 Florida Gators, SEC-3rd (8-3) - Coach: Doug Dickey, 5th season with team The "big" bowl games kicked off with the 1974 Gator Bowl, pitting two top-ten teams in the #9 Florida Gators (the hometown favorites) and the #7 Missouri Tigers. The Gators won easily, 28-0, despite the Missouri offense being able to match the Florida offense drive for drive. The difference? The Tigers turned the ball over six times - including an interception in the third quarter that was run back for a touchdown by linebacker Glenn Cameron, salting the game away. Missouri's Tony Galbreath was the game's most impressive player, as he ran for 117 yards on 16 carries, but Florida's Tony Green took MVP kudos with a pair of touchdown runs for the Gators. SUGAR BOWL RECAP
December 31, 1974 - Tulane Stadium, New Orleans, Louisiana #2 Nebraska Cornhuskers, Big 8 Champs (9-2) - Coach: Tom Osborne, 2nd season with team vs #5 Auburn Tigers, SEC-2nd (9-2) - Coach: Ralph "Shug" Jordan, 25th season with team The last pre-New Year's Day Bowl, the 1974 Sugar Bowl, featured a matchup of top five teams as the second-ranked Nebraska Cornhuskers battled the #5-ranked Auburn Tigers. With the game moving to the still-under-construction Superdome for 1975, this was the final Sugar Bowl played at Tulane Stadium. Nebraska's Tony Davis had a big game, rushing for 186 yards on 18 tries, as leading ground-gainer Monte Anthony got only seven carries for 23 yards. The Huskers racked up 343 of their 415 total yards on the ground, and led 21-3 after three quarters of play. But an exciting ending was in store as Auburn took advantage of three fourth-quarter turnovers by the Huskers and roared back to score 28 in the fourth, including a pair of TDs in the final 1:03, to win 31-21. Auburn quarterback Phil Gargis completed a 67-yard bomb to Thomas Gossom with 1:03 left to play to give the Tigers a 24-21 lead. Just seconds later, defensive back Bruce Evans picked off Nebraska's David Humm and returned it 42 yards to put the game away. Gargis won MVP honors for the long TD pass and his 107 yards of rushing. ORANGE BOWL RECAP
January 1, 1975 - Orange Bowl, Miami, Florida #3 Alabama Crimson Tide, SEC Champs (10-1) - Coach: Paul "Bear" Bryant, 17th season with team vs #8 Notre Dame Fighting Irish, Independent (9-2) - Coach: Ara Parseghian, 11th season with team The Orange Bowl looked like it would live up to its traditional blockbuster billing as the #3-ranked Alabama Crimson Tide, champions of the Southeastern Conference matched up with the eighth-ranked perennial Independent powerhouse Notre Dame Fighting Irish. A pair of coaching legends would be matching wits as 'Bama's Bear Bryant would square off with the Irish's Ara Parseghian. Alas, the game itself was a one-sided rout by the Crimson Tide. A snarling Tide defense forced five turnovers - four of them on interceptions of Irish passer Tom Clements, while the usually efficient Alabama offense worked on the tough Irish defenders for 249 ground yards and 68 more through the air. 44 of those 68 yards came on a beautiful touchdown pass from QB Richard Todd to outstanding receiver/end Ozzie Newsome. Though Bryant is reluctant to air the ball out, occasionally he unleashes Newsome and the big receiver never fails to impress. In the end it was 38-0, 'Bama, with four different backs getting into the end zone, all on short runs. MVP honors went to Newsome who was not only responsible for all the Tide's receiving yards, but also provided expert blocking for the running game. GAME MVP: TE Ozzie Newsome, Alabama BOXSCORE Code:

1975 Cotton Bowl
COTTON BOWL RECAP
January 1, 1975 - Cotton Bowl, Dallas, Texas #1 Michigan Wolverines, Big-10 2nd (10-1) - Coach: Bo Schembechler, 6th season with team vs #12 Texas Longhorns, SWC Champs (9-2) - Coach: Darrell Royal, 18th season with team The Cotton Bowl got the plum of the crop when the Michigan Wolverines failed to defeat the Ohio State Buckeyes in conference play, sending OSU to the Rose Bowl and leaving the nationally #1-ranked Wolverines available for a Texas showdown with the University of Texas Longhorns. Though the fans on hand were slanted heavily in favor of the underdog Longhorns, the Wolverines brought some faithful of their own and treated them to a traditional Michigan victory: good defense and lots of rushing in a 20-5 win which essentially cemented their claim on the National Championship. The Longhorns battled - their defense was nearly as stifling as Michigan's and each team snapped up three turnovers. Frosh sensation Earl Campbell never got untracked against the Wolverines, finishing with just 32 yards on 9 carries - which led Texas in rushing. Overall, the Longhorns managed 119 yards of total offense, Michigan 190. Gordon Bell earned game MVP honors as he rushed for 77 yards on 23 carries and scored both Michigan touchdowns. GAME MVP: RB Gordon Bell, Michigan BOXSCORE Code:

1974 Rose Bowl
ROSE BOWL RECAP
January 1, 1975 - Rose Bowl, Pasadena, California #6 Ohio State Buckeyes, Big-10 Champs (10-1) - Coach: Bo Schembechler, 6th season with team vs #11 USC Trojans, Pac-8 Champs (9-2) - Coach: Darrell Royal, 18th season with team The Granddaddy of the all capped the 1974 Bowl Season with its traditional pairing of the Big-10 and Pac-8 Champions. The Ohio State Buckeyes, the only team to defeat top-ranked Michigan, earned the Big-10 slot by virtue of that huge win over the Wolverines. The Trojans finished atop the Pac-8 in what was considered a weak season from the usually strong conference. Both teams featured top running backs, with OSU's Heisman-winning junior tailback Archie Griffin and top Trojan-gainer Anthony Davis. The Buckeyes proved to be too much for the Trojans, winning a lopsided affair by the final of 23-0. The Trojans played strong defense, forcing the Bucks to settle for field goals on three long drives, but their offense was unable to get untracked against the Buckeyes, with just yards on 34 rushes and 61 yards passing. The Buckeyes defense picked off Trojan QB Pat Haden three times and also forced three fumbles, recovering two. On the offensive side, the Trojans saw Griffin - a lot. The Heisman winner churned out 31 carries and went for 111 yards, but was kept out of the end zone. The game's only rushing touchdown came on a seven-yard burst by fullback Pete Johnson while the other TD was on a Cornelius Greene pass - one of just six he threw in the game. Griffin's performance garnered him Rose Bowl MVP honors. GAME MVP: RB Archie Griffin, Ohio State BOXSCORE Code:

1974 Season Wrapup
MICHIGAN WINS NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP
The Michigan Wolverines held onto their top spot when the final poll was announced following the close of the bowl season. After winning the Cotton Bowl over Texas, Michigan (11-1-0) was easily number one, followed by the Alabama Crimson Tide (11-1-0), winners of the SEC conference title and the Orange Bowl. The only other team to go 11-1-0 (no one was undefeated) was the Ohio State Buckeyes. Ironically, the Bucks - the only team to defeat Michigan - won the Big Ten conference title and the Rose Bowl, but finished with a #4 ranking, behind Oklahoma (locked out of bowl games because of probation). Their low ranking probably results from losing to Wisconsin, at home, in their fifth game of the season, a three-point loss that marred an otherwise stellar season. The Wolverines' championship season looks like this: Code:
