You mean, up until 1998, right? I hear ya. I just can't muster hate for Dorrell anymore, so it's funny to me to see you still so passionate. I spewed my vitriol weeks ago, and now I am just settling in, waiting for the axe to fall. I still care, of course, but I no longer have any expectations for this season, so a loss is expected, and a win does nothing to improve the state of the program.

This is what I was getting at. They play 7 home games, if they were serious about the BCS they would have sacrificed one of those home games against a 1AA school to get someone decent. He even managed to get Washington to fly out, thats an opportunity to at least play a BCS school at home and it should have opened up a road game against a good team. If you're in the WAC or another conference with a weak conference schedule and you want to make a serious run at a BCS Bowl then you have no business scheduling 1AA schools, let alone 2. If the Hawaii AD wanted to schedule tough road games and cry about the deck being stacked against them and having to schedule road games to play anyone, then I'd listen. However, he scheduled Northern Colorado and Charleston Southern at home and with the way this year has gone it could make all the difference in being 12th in the BCS or being 13th. It could just be how things have rolled this year (every coach gets fired/resigns eventually anyway), but I think it's also an indication the Pac 10 is growing up a little as a football conference. I think it's due to three things--huge BCS money, the return of USC dominance, the success of nontypical Pac-10 teams in the past decade (OSU, Wazzu, Oregon, Cal). The first is the carrot that wasn't there before. The second is motivation out of fear--they don't want to be embarrassed by USC, so they raise the level of their play. The third is proof that even the schools with relatively more difficult circumstances can field a competitive and strong program. With higher standards for success comes higher expectations--and a lot of coaches are feeling the heat. I think the Pac 10 has done very well as a football conference for the past decade, and you could argue it is only behind the SEC in that stretch for overall top-to-bottom quality of play. The schools and the fans--even the media--expect better now. Basketball has seen a similar renaissance that I think has been keyed by the return of UCLA to prominence.

Hey Jeebs, I was talking to my old high school principal and he told me he was the replay official for the UTEP/Rice game this past weekend. Did he blow any calls that I can make fun of him for?

How many touchdowns did Rice score? I'm sure there were that many plays he blew.

OK, we always hear how crappy the Computer polls are, and I am as big of a Clemson homer as exists. But The A&H poll shows Clemson #1. I have a hard time respecting any poll that has the Tigers #1 at this point in the season. And to think this makes up part of the BCS....shameful |

From the way it looks, that 1 is one point for a ranking of 25. See how OSU has four 25s on there? I think that's 25 points for first...

There are only two things I look forward to seeing on rare occasions on ESPN Classic as much or more than some of my favorite UNC Basketball wins. One is Kerry Wood's 20 strikeout game. The other is this Ga Tech/UVA game, such a classic. |

LOL, yeah... the 1 point means that the poll ranks Clemson 25th! 25 means #1 all the way down to 1, which means #25.

The other interesting thing about that UVA team is that they accepted a bid to the Sugar Bowl when they were ranked #1 and subsequently lost three straight. That was one of the things that lead to the structure today with all of the bowl tie-ins. In the past few bowls had automatic tie-ins, and the bowls could choose the opponents.

Not as absurd as suggesting Hawaii belongs in a BCS bowl game unless they buy tickets.

so I'm wondering about all the people who say they dont belong, if Hawaii gets into a BCS game and wins, will you stand by those statements?

The point for me isn't really that they can't compete. I honestly don't know the answer to that. The question of whether they belong or not comes down to whether or not they've done enough this season to deserve a BCS bid and quite honestly, even with an undefeated season I'd have to say no. What they do in the game really wouldn't be an issue for me. |

That's ok. I did the same thing a couple of weeks ago looking at Kansas, wondering how we were ranked 6th or something like that. When really it was 6 from the bottom (19th) which was more fitting. SI

Rumor on the street has two Big 12 coaches getting the ax today. Word from College Station is that they will be buying out Franchione's contract for $2 million. He will stay until the end of the season. And Callahan will have a similar buyout announced this afternoon as well. Let's see if these are true or not.

One thing that got overlooked in all the wild plays in the LSU-Alabama game. LSU running back Jacob Hester ran down an Alabama cornerback from behind when the Bama CB intercepted a pass and was headed for the endzone. Now that was a great play. He has 4.5 speed, btw, which is not blazing but is faster than a lot of people think he is. And he has a lot of "want to." Yeah, he got a personal foul for a shove after the tackle, and Bama scored on the possession, but I thought the fact he ran a cornerback down from behind was pretty cool. That and his flying leap for the winning touchdown.
