Those two you posted (particularly the second one) scare the fuck out of me for some reason.

Geez! I have driven to Medicine Hat a number of times in my life, and I had no idea that face was there!

I haven't messed around with Google Earth too much, but the technology looks awesome. The resolution of those pics from that distance is astounding.

I just noticed something. When I looked at the map of my old workplace in New Orleans a while back, I actually saw my car in the satellite photo. That was pretty cool. Now, I just looked again, and it's a new picture, because my car is no longer there. In fact, there aren't any cars there, which is unusual for that place.
I wonder how often Google updates images for major cities in the US.

Not as often as I thought. Looking at houses in Denver, there has been a couple times that I've used a Google's aerial view to look at houses built in 2002 and all I saw was an empty lot. Mapquest had them though.

It's not that strange, unless you drive by it every day and have actually looked for it and simply can't find it. I just want to know what this thing is:
http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=e...&t=k&z=15&om=1 I literally drive by this on the way to work every day, but I have never seen it with my own eyes, nor do I know what it is. One day I was out early and had some extra time so I turned off to look for it but gave up after a few minutes. I didn't look that hard, but I certainly didn't see anything like that here. What is that thing? |

That should be a sewage treatment plant. The three large lagoons would be used to aerify the influent, allowing bacteria to eat up the nasties and to allow the sludge to settle out. The two circular objects toward the bottom appear to be skimmers/clarifiers that remove anything still floating on the surface. One of the adjacent buildings would have further filtration devices and/or an ultraviolet system to finish the process before releasing water back to the environment.

Actually I dont think I was far enough east when I turned. Thanks for the detailed answer, though. It looks really weird from the air. |

on Google you can't get a good look at my house- but on another site someone once sent me. I can clearly see my house, and backyard- and I can see the shed I built back there 2 years ago, and my backyard had plenty of grass- so it was pre last summer. You could also see the back of my truck under the garage. I'm going to have to find it again, it was very cool
edit: It was MSN... http://maps.live.com/default.aspx?v=...null&encType=1 Pretty cool, that is my house in the center. Last edited by Doug5984 : 07-12-2007 at 04:18 PM. |

That MSN tool is downright creepy - not only the level of detail, but also being able to zoom 360 degrees. I can see my kids' swingset in my backyard. Based on the stuff in my yard, I think that photo is taken sometime between 2005 or 2006. We put a shed out there in '05, and added a playhouse for Christmas '06. The shed is the photo, but the playhouse is not.

Yet another compliment on a brilliantly played turn of the phrase. SI
