Texas Justice...?

What the hell?

Texas Crowd Kills Man After Car Hit Girl
Jun 20 02:04 PM US/Eastern
By LIZ AUSTIN PETERSON
Associated Press Writer

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) - An angry crowd beat a man to death after a vehicle he was riding in struck and injured a young girl, police said Wednesday.

Police believe 2,000 to 3,000 people were in the area for a Juneteenth celebration when the attack occurred Tuesday night.

The driver had stopped to check on the little girl at the entrance to an apartment complex when a group of men attacked him, authorities said. The passenger, David Rivas Morales, 40, got out to try to help the driver, but the crowd turned on him, said police Commander Harold Piatt.

Morales was beaten to death by as many as 20 men and left lying in a parking lot, Piatt said. A preliminary autopsy listed blunt force trauma as the cause of death.

The little girl, 3 or 4 years old, was taken to a hospital with non- life threatening injuries.

The driver, who got away from the crowd, is cooperating with investigators, police said. Piatt did not know how many witnesses had been identified, but thousands of people had been in the area for the daylong festival. He said no guns or knives appeared to have used in the fatal attack.

Juneteenth marks the day Gen. Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston in 1865 to share news of the Emancipation Proclamation, which freed slaves two years earlier on Jan. 1, 1863.

The crazy thing is that it wasn't even the driver. Not that they would have been justified in killing the driver, but geez...the dude was just a passenger.

It took two years for a city in Texas to learn of the Emancipation Proclamation? Seriously?

They knew about it when it happened, but because Texas was part of the Confederacy, it wasn't enforced until the war was over, and Union troops re-took control.

This kind of thing has happened in Chicago a few times since I've moved here (though I'm pretty sure it's been the driver in all those cases).

Your focus on this incident as 'Texas' justice is misdirected. There were several other articles that have been posted today citing examples of Juneteenth riots, including one in Syracuse.

I don't want to start a race argument, but these Juneteenth problems have nothing to do with 'Texas' justice.

I think the headline was fitting....as it happened in Texas...and JUSTICE WAS SERVED!

Do they still hang people in Texas? I think some of these fools would be good candidates.

What's amazed me about this story is the amount of people who I've heard talk about it act as though the driver got what he deserved. How the hell do we know he was wreckless? All we know is that he clipped a kid and then stopped to try to help the kid.

Then the passenger gets out and dies because of this. It's too bad there wasn't videotape of this incident. Everyone involved should face 10 year prison terms. What a bunch of wack jobs.

Not that the issue isn't likely to surface as the undertone to this whole awful story anyway, but a statement like that isn't exactly the way to steer clear of a race argument, wouldn't you agree?

No, I wouldn't agree. My point was that the reaction of the crowd was not a reflection of "Texas" justice. I supported my position by pointing out that Juneteenth riotous activities had occurred in various parts of the country (articles today reflect Texas, Milwaukee, and Syracuse as examples).

The facts speak for themselves. People can make of them what they will.

According to the local news last night, it was a little boy that got hit, not a little girl. And the police have changed the number of people in the area this happened from several thousand to 10-15.

Oh, and not a single person in the apartment complex that this happened at saw anything at all related to the incident...

If your "point" was to defend the characterization of Texas, then all you needed to do was say that these celebrations happen in other places than Texas, and have been prone to violence in the past. You instead chose to use the little finesse step of raising race by saying you didn't want to raise race. And then your "facts" followup quoted above is another layer of the same.

Didn't see any mention of the race of the perps in the article, but I did notice the passenger seems to be latino. Because of their relative places on the socio-economic ladder, and with the anti-immigration wave sweeping parts of the country, I'm interested to know whether the perps were black. If they were, I suspect this wasn't by far the first instance of black on latino or latino on black violence in the United States in recent months, nor do I suspect it to be the last.

I see a lot of paralels between hispancis vs. blacks today and the irish and italians and the chinese in the 19th century.

We're just a national powderkeg waiting to go off.

And that's not even counting the white middle class who are putting the immigrant issues on a state and national stage in legislatures.

As an Alan Rickman-esque Marvin says, "This can only end in tears."

Cheers.
