is it too late to take Texas out of my bracket, because they're somewhat important to it. And am I the only one who can't look at Reggie Theus, because every time I do, I see Anthony Anderson and the other people from Hangtime.

hahahaha Hangtime I forgot about that. I was just IMing with a friend of mine that I hadn't seen Reggie Theus since that night when he was an analyst for TNT and uttered a line that we quoted a lot over the next several years (not a great line or anything so I won't share it, it was just the situation at the time made it pretty hilarious).
But I had forgotten about Hangtime. |

I still have a Reggie Theus with the Nets basketball card from the 80's. A tall ugly man in those old hideous Nets uniforms scared the hell out of me. That card was kept at the bottom of the shoe box.

Reggie Theus=Genius. I mean, he turned Anthony Anderson into an All State basketball player, and he won with a girl, why should we have doubted New Mexico State?

I had to work late tonight, so I wasn't able to start watching the game until 10 minutes left. The 'Horns have a bad habit of playing up to or down to the level of their opponent. When they could have put NMSU away in the 2nd half, they let them get back into it, and didn't ice the game until about a minute and a half left to play.

Kentucky and Villanova coming up. I truly believe that Tubby Smith is coaching for his job in this game.

OK, so Kentucky accidently started the wrong player, so to start the game on the tip, they had him foul the first guy who grabbed the ball. Am I the only one who thinks that is completely classless by the coaches? The kid had played in three games all year. Unless he hasn't practiced in the past month, could it really be that harmful to let him play until the first dead ball? Just an FYI, that first dead ball came after 30 seconds.

The latest rumor is that HWSNBN will be the next coach of UK. Of course, if he turned down IU last year I don't know why he would leave for Kentucky. But then again, he's never lasted more than three years at any school he's been at.

I tend to agree...to be honest if he's going to intentionally foul they should have had him be ultraaggro on the ball handler and play for a steal....at least maybe they get a benefit then. |

BTW, the player who was subbed in was subbed out at the three minute mark. I am now actively campaigning for Fatty to be fired for being such a classless loser.

I have no problem with it. There is a reason he has only played in three games all season. It is not like it is Senior Night and you are giving the senior who sits the bench all year a chance to start.

but why tell him to foul? What good does that do your team, especially since you subbed the other guy out 3 minutes later. It did absolutely no good for your team.

But wouldn't the scrub know that he wasn't actually supposed to be in there?
Edit: Or was it a mistake by the scorers table?

The flip side is if the kid is abused during his time on the court, you are blamed for not doing everything in your power to get him out of the game as quickly as possible.

Though I still don't see how the coaching staff could make that kind of gaffe.

Nardi always reminds me of Ollie in Hoosiers. I wonder if Jay Wright measured the hoop height.

It was obviously a mistake on the coaching staff's part to start that guy, so they had to do whatever was necessary to get the "real" starter onto the floor. It's not like Tubby was trying to taunt the guy by starting him. It was a mistake (albeit a very stupid one). Commit the foul immediately, and it doesn't cost UK anything but a team foul. Why not?
It's the NCAA tournament. You absolutely do not compromise your team's chance to win by playing a kid who played 3 games all year just to avoid hurting his feelings. That guy did not belong in the game, and Tubby made sure to get his real starting lineup on the floor ASAP. I don't see a problem with that at all.

My one issue is that he didn't try to gain an advantage given that he's gonna commit a foul. He could have had the kid set hack for a steal or set a hard moving screen. Maybe they wouldn't have called it. Most likely they would but you risk nothing really. |

Now, if it's a kid who's played in 10 or 15 games, or if it's your team's 8th or 9th man, maybe you give him more freedom to make a play, but it's someone who's pretty much never played. Without any significant game experience, the safest move is to just commit a quick, obvious foul and get off the floor.

This Nova game is very weird. Seems to me like Kentucky should be up 15 because they have played so well this half, but Nova has done a good job staying in shouting distance.
If they come back and win that Nardi play will probably be the key. |

Blah. Nova needs to recruit more offense. I fear for next year with Sumpter gone. What a sad ending to a promising college career. Had Sumpter been healthy last year, its not a stretch to think that they could've beaten Florida and at least made it to the Final Four.

Every single 1-5 seed won their first round game. I wonder if that has every happened before.

Quite a few interesting stats at this site, including records by seed
http://mcubed.net/ncaab/seeds.shtml But of all the stuff there, I didn't see an easy answer to the question of how long since the top 5 all won their 1st game. But I did find this: http://www.sportsline.com/collegebas...story/shockers No top 4's lost in 2004, but #12's Pacific & Manhattan beat #5's Providence & Florida But in 2000, all of the 1-5 teams won their opener but it was close: http://espn.go.com/ncb/ncaatourney00/s/bracket.html Florida beat Butler 69-68 in OT and Kentucky beat St. Bonaventure 85-80 in 2 OT. (biggest 1st round upset was #11 Pepperdine over #6 Indiana 77-57) Only other time since 1985 that no top 4's lost in the first round was 1994, but a pair of 5's won: Tulsa over UCLA 112-102 and Wisc-GB beat Cal 61-57. So it looks like this has only happened one other time since the field went to 64 teams.

Jon,
Thanks for the research. Interestingly in 2000, we then had 2 #1s and 3 #2s lose in the second round and the final four was 1,5,8,8.
