Any Prairie Home Companion Listeners?

I don't catch it often enough because of the broadcast times, but I am big fan of Garrison Keillor despite his sometimes flakey politics. Just curious if any other FOFCers tuned in.

I do listen to the show, but find much of it to be boring. I love Keillor's sotries from Lake Wobegon though. I had a bunch of those on MP3's at one time. Some very clever writing there and he's a great storyteller.

My thoughts on Garrison Keillor were best summed up on the episode of The Simpsons (I think it was when Homer got an illegal cable hookup) and a Keillor-type character was on the screen performing. Homer walked over to the TV, started beating on it and yelled, "Be funnier!"

If the current spate of actor/comedians is your taste, then I could see how you might find Kellior a tad dull.

I've caught his show occasionally and find that his reports from Lake Wobegon are very entertaining. He's an excellent writer, has a wonderful voice, and employs a nice narrative style.

There are some aspects to his work that seem to strike a chord with some, and miss wildly with others. Perhaps its his whole nostalgic take on small town life in the midwest? I dunno.

If I happen to be in the car on Saturday, I'll tune in. I rely on NPR to keep me entertained and informed during my morning and afternoon commutes. This mainly entails "Morning Edition", "All Things Considered", and, sometimes, "Fresh Air".

Hampton Roads is lucky in that we have 2 PBS radio stations. One plays classical, and the other plays the "NPR" type of programing. In other places I have been the two formats are mixed together.

I tend to stay away from the news, because public radio tends to have a wildly welfare-state liberal point of view. Of course I will stay tuned if there is a good interview on.

What I do like is the Motley Fool, PHC, National Press Club, and The Thistle and Shamrock (mmmm, I love Fiona Ritche's voice). There was also a cowboy show that escapes me.

Now, that's a good description of Garrison Keillor! He attacked the new Senator here in Minnesota, Norm Coleman, pretty visciously. It was kind of shocking, cause he usually likes to stay so private, unless of course it suits his needs.

It's pretty hit-or-miss. Some of the skits can be just dreadful. Usually the ones with the detective are pretty bad, but he makes up for it with Lake Wobegon.

I've seen a lot of things in my short time on this world, but this is the first instance of a heated debate over the lameness of a mall.

I also agree with Cam, a mall that big isn't a thing to be proud of, I think it's rather depressing actually. No offense intended towards the mall itself intended, I wouldn't dare. More or less towards the people who cause something like that to come about.

Agree. I've tried to get into the Praire Home Companion mainly because they play so much but I'm a bigger fan of their news programs.

Ya know, I hear people claim this so often, that I almost believe it must be true.

I've been listening to "Morning Edition" and "All things Considered" for a few years now, and while I agree it has a liberal slant (in my opinion, all good media coverage should be liberal), I wouldn't say their programming is "wildly welfare-state liberal point of view". What gives you that idea?

There's nothing on the radio in the Austin area quite like NPR. Not only does it keep me apprised of current events, it intellectually analyzes those events by providing perspectives from many angles.
