Dexter Question - Which came first, the chicken or the egg?

So in these flashbacks they take the time to show that the father trained Dexter to be able to "blend in" and not get caught, to use his killer instincts to "kill for good", lets say? But which came first, would Dexter really have become the killer he is had his dad not put him on a distinct path through training, environment, and teachings? Im torn on that.

I think Dexter still would have become a killer assuming that some horrendous trauma occured (that they alude to) that set him on the path of becoming a person with "anti-social personality disorder." He was already torturing animals and killing for sport, among other things. I think if his dad didn't channel his energies for "good" that Dexter would likely have been a serial killer, but almost certainly would have been caught much earlier.

Dola -

However, with intensive therapy at a younger age I think Dexter stood a good chance of probably never killing. If dad realized the path Dexter was heading down when he was younger instead of a teenager it likely could have been avoided.

I don't really think this guy was ever going to "blend in".

I realize this is about the show, but the trama he suffered as a child (revealed at the end of the first book and probably down the line of the show) shows that, yeah, he would have been a serial killer.

Thank God. I thought I was the only one thinking of *that* Dexter, Jon.

Hell, I'm still confused.

Well, at least now I've figured out that this is something on Showtime.

I was going to start in on the books to find out if this was delved into more deeply, but found out the series is based off of the first novel and really don't want to start reading now until the series is over. I'll be watching last weeks Dexter and Mastors of Horror tonight before Heroes.

I'll probably rent the dvd's at some point, I just have no disire to pay for showtime. The whole concept of the series sounds great, something like the movie Suspect Zero. Well at least the original concept of that movie before they rewrote the script 10000 times and changed it.
