Butch Davis reportedly hired to coach North Carolina

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/200...unc/index.html

NEW YORK (SI.com) -- Butch Davis has agreed to become the next head coach at North Carolina, two sources told the Winston-Salem Journal on Wednesday afternoon.

One source told the paper that a contract has already been signed.

According to the Journal's sources, the school has yet to decide when to make an official announcement.

North Carolina sports information directior Steve Kirschner told the Journal that the university had nothing to report about its coaching search.

Davis would replace John Bunting, whom the school fired on Oct. 22, effective after the season. With an 0-5 conference mark (1-8 overall), the Tar Heels are tied for last place in the ACC Coastal Division with Duke.

Davis has not coached since 2004, when he was fired by the Cleveland Browns after amassing a 24-36 record. Prior to joining the Browns in 2000, Davis coached for six seasons at Miami, where he was 51-20.

Argh. I really wanted him to come back to Miami. Fuckers taking too long to fire Coker.

I believe he said previously he was not interested in Miami at all. And I don't blame him.

Miami was in a much, much worse situation when he was hired last time.

I remember when Butch Davis coached Miami. I sort of rooted for him for a year or two, as I liked him and thought he was doing a good job. Then I remembered how much I disliked "The U", and had to root against him when they actually became good again.

I will be able to root for UNC without any such reservations this time around.

The only thing I remember about Butch Davis at Miami was the 47-0 pasting FSU put on Miami in 1997. Probably the highlight of my time in Tallahassee, even better than the 2 championships.

I'm sure he will leave for greener pastures as soon as he builds the team back up.

But UNC wasn't in a position to hire a name guy who was going to stick around forever.

Better for them to get Davis and have a few good years under him than to hire a no-name and have more 3 win seasons.

I was hoping that Butch would be taking over for Billick in Baltimore, but I guess I can't get that lucky again.

As a Hokie fan, I approve of Butch Davis and his 0-6 record against VPI becoming the coach of another ACC team.

1-5. He beat the Hokies in 2000.

I just saw this quote on Football Outsiders today, just about sums up his NFL tenure.

Quote:
AT LEAST HE WASN’T THE CAVEMAN WHO DISSED THE WHEEL

“Well, one thing we’ll take care of in the draft. We are going to get a back. This guy from TCU. I’ve watched him a lot and so have our scouts. This guy is the real deal.”

– former Browns coach Chris Palmer, speaking about Tomlinson in 2000.

“This guy may be the next Emmitt Smith. But he’s an option back who doesn’t fit what we want to do and we need to help our defense.”

– next head coach Butch Davis, before selecting Gerard Warren with the third pick in the 2001 draft.

Yeah, 5 years later how is the Brown's Defense holding up.

Reiterating my earlier point, when Butch came to Miami in 1995, it was a much worse situation. We still had the same behavioral problems as we do now, but had added NCAA violations on top of that. Butch was without a full load of scholarships the first few years. Still, he was able to slowly rebuild the team, both in talent and discipline. When he went for the NFL we had finished the year as the #2 team in the nation.

To act like Butch was a bad coach or youre happy to see him because he lost thi sgame or has a bad record against this team is silly. He was playing with pretty severe house rules.
