BCS rankings should be interesting tomorrow. Louisville and Texas are pretty much even in the AP Poll (1,441-1,438) and Texas has a slight lead in the USA Today Poll (1,397-1,382). But since the AP poll isn't a component of the BCS, it won't matter. The Harris Poll hasn't been released yet, but most of the season it has pretty much lined up with the USA Today poll.

Actually the AP poll isn't in the BCS.

true, but when it gets rocking, it's really tough to play there. not much reason to rock lately, however

Stanford is the Pac-10's "get well" card. Hopefully my Huskies don't fuck up and lose next week to the worst Pac-10 team since probably the 1980 Oregon State Beavers.

Wow, I agree with IMTG...

Yeah, it's just that it's a road game in a very hostile environment against a decent team. I'll take the win every time, even if it's just a point.

Fixed.

Here's the guy who gets it:

Quote:
Kirk Bohls of the Austin American-Statesman had Louisville No. 2 and said the Cardinals deserve credit for having one of the nation's best offenses.

"This has got to be one of the most complex voting situations I've seen because people don't know what to make of the Big East," he said. "Style points mean everything this time of year. When I see Michigan struggle at home against Ball State and Louisville smash third-ranked West Virginia, I think you have to give them credit for that."

I'm a huge Rutgers fan and would love to see them in the National Championship. But I figured they would get absolutely destroyed by Ohio State. Then this weekend, Ohio State had trouble with Illinois, a team Rutgers destroyed 33-0 in a game that wasn't even that close. Now I'm not trying to sell the transitive property here, but all it shows is that any one team can beat or remain competitive with anyone for one game. On the biggest stage, after a month of not playing competitively, it's not very uncommon for the "star" players on the big teams to just come out a little flat. And that's all you need to pull off an upset.

That's why I hate statements like Whitlock's. If you really think a team that is 8-0 and just came off a solid win over WVU can't hang with OSU for ONE game, you're insane. And would it matter if Louisville's D didn't show up and they got into a shootout with OSU? I seem to remember an amazing NC game last year that was seriously lacking star defensive players.

I give credit to Illinois' defense... they could've very easily given up after getting down 17-0, but instead they stacked the line knowing Tressel likes to hold leads.

That being said, dime has it right here. OSU did not really do anything dramatic or dynamic in this game, likely on purpose. Why bother rolling out the quick strike, high powered offense in what was mostly an easy game? This wasn't even a game until Illinois made it 17-10 with under 2 minutes left, and by then it was too late for them and all OSU had to do was kill the clock.

But it was a bit more reminiscent of the 2002 title team than I like. That season was brutal on the fans' hearts... numerous late scares and close wins. This 7 point win was by far the closest game of the season so far, which is actually quite impressive considering the way Tressel usually coaches (hold the ball, don't turn it over, win with defense).

If USC wins out, they will have wins over #8 ND, #9 Cal, #11 Arkansas, #20 Oregon, #25 USC and just one loss. The key to these games are that 3 are non-conf, so it's not just a factor of an overrate conference.Their SOS is currently #5 and will get better (ND, Cal and Oregon coming up). If Louisville loses and USC wins out, I can't imagine that they won't finish #2.

In that case, I guess I'll be rooting for USC to beat ND, and Cal to beat USC. That would give ND and USC each 2 losses and take them out of the discussion.

At this point, it looks like the only 1 loss teams that will have a chance if two of the three remaining unbeatens fall will be Texas or Florida. Human polls make up 2/3s of the BCS standings, and human voters usually don't jump teams a couple of spots if the teams ahead of them win. That means even though the winner of the Cal/USC elimination game or the ND/USC elimination game will have a big win, it probably won't move them far enough up in the polls. Auburn might have an outside shot if both Texas and Florida lose their conference championship games.

If USC beats up on Cal and ND they will rocket up the polls, human and computer. Beating two top 10 teams in the final 3 weeks will do wonders, especially if they do with large margins of victory.

Chances of USC doing that are pretty low, however. I think they'll lose to Cal and beat ND.

I agree, but im stating a fact. If they win them both, convicingly would help, they will be there around the top. Especially since texas and florida have championship games to lose, Auburn isnt in theirs as long as arkansas keeps rolling, and rutgers(despite my feelings) will get love from voters if they beat WVU and UL

I think it would be a shame if a 1-loss Florida would get the nod over a 1-loss USC. Florida's nonconference includes Southern Miss, UCF and Western Carolina. As it stands right now, they will only have beaten 2 top 25 teams (LSU and Tenn), while playing 3. USC will have beaten 5 top 25 teams with a non-conf schedule of Arkansas, Nebraska and ND. Even if Florida wins the champ game against Arkansas, they still would have a worse SOS and fewer big wins.

If the BCS rewards Florida for that non-conference schedule, every SEC team should go out and schedule the three worst teams in the NCAA for nonconf each season.

In re #262:

Kirk Bohls "getting it" on Louisville at #2 is a classic example of even a broken clock being right twice a day. Bohls is one of the worst sports columnists I've ever read and his college football "expertise" consists of saying how John Makovic was the best thing to come to Texas since Darrel Royal, then doing the same speech with Chirs Simms for four years.

Anyway, slightly more on-topic, I can't believe anyone would actually vote Louisville 9th.
