Can I get a FOFC review of FLYBOYS please?
LOL. Have you been over to rottentomatos for this movie? Most people here brag about this site, but after reading the reviews over there I think I will stay away from Rotten.
Curently the Tomato reading is at 23%. Splat. Splat. Quote:

Basically a lot of bad reviews of how this movie does not go into the real life details about WW1 in general, but just tries to have a fun time with its characters. I am not looking for War and Piece here. Something along the lines of Kelly's Heros or The Dirty Dozen would be awesome. Can't I just have a good time at the movies anymore without a history lesson? I have read that it is Star Wars set in the WW1 era. That would be cool. |

Well, to be fair, Rottentomatoes just collates individual reviewers reviews. They aren't Rottentomatoes own reviewers. I use Rottentomatoes as a basic guideline. If a move scores below 20% I know it's going to be terrible, if it scores below 40% I know it's going to be below average, and if it's over 60% then I know it's going to be a decent watch. That's about all I try and get out of it. It's still much more useful than reading individual reviews, unless you happen to find a particular critic who's tastes match your own.

It's a bit disingenuous to blast rottentomatoes in the first place for reviews that they don't even make themselves, and then especially when there are a whopping 13(!) reviews in for this thing yet. You have to wait till closer till opening, usually friday morning, to get a more accurate picture of the consensus of the reviews.

What is your methodology for defining whether a review that does not include a star rating or other objective grading scale counts as a Fresh or Rotten rating on the tomatometer?
Most critics from the Online Film Critics Society (OFCS) enter their own quotes and ratings. For critics who don't enter in their own quotes and ratings, it's basically up to the judgment of the editors. They take into account word choice, rating (if any), tone, and who's the critic in their determination of whether a review is positive or not. If an editor is not certain about a review, it is sent to another editor for a second opinion. "Wishy-washy" reviews, reviews that are really difficult to determine if the critic recommends the film or not, are usually given a Rotten because if the critic is not confident enough to give the movie even an implied recommendation, then we shouldn't either. On the Blade 2 reviews page, you have a negative review from James Berardinelli (2.5/4 stars), and a positive review from Eric Lurio (2.5/5). Why is Berardinelli's review labeled Rotten and Lurio's review labeled Fresh? You're seeing this discrepancy because star systems are not consistent between critics. For critics like Roger Ebert and James Berardinelli, 2.5 stars or lower out of 4 stars is always negative. For other critics, 2.5 stars can either be positive or negative. Even though Eric Lurio uses a 5 star system, his grading is very relaxed. So, 2 stars can be positive. Also, there's always the possibility of the webmaster or critic putting the wrong rating on a review. |

Imagine 2 people talking....
"You want to go to the movies." "Yeah, this new action flick got a C+ from the reviewer!" Hardly sounds like a ringing endorsement. |

I thought the previews would be enough to show that this movie would indeed be a steaming pile of crap.

Unless you're referring to a porn version, I believe you meant War and Peace.

Actually, I had the same thought as the reviewer did when I saw the previews. The movie wouldn't have to be in black and white to look authentic, but the CGI in the previews just looked too clean and polished. They also seemed to show one plane flying through a zeppelin undamaged. If the movie is about early WWI pilots, the movie should have a WWI feel. |

If a movie is going to attempt to be historical, and it doesn't succeed, it's a failure. See Pearl Harbor for reference.

I don't think the list of women that like WWI dogfighting movies is very long.. so.. probably not. Could always ask though. So, do you like movies about WWI dogfighting?

Near the start of Flyboys, the squadron's grizzled vet hands suicide pistols to the new pilots, to be used if they find themselves in a no-win situation.
Unfortunately, the audience is offered no such option -Bill Muller, Arizona Republic Last edited by stevew : 09-22-2006 at 11:04 AM. |

Flyboys - what a terrible name for a movie unless you like men or like to be manhandled.
