FOF 2K4: Memphis Pro Football
Inspired by the talk of new “empty cupboard” careers, I've decided to start one myself. My FOF2k4 database somehow got corrupted, so I had to abandon a few long term careers I was playing on and off. So when I restarted, I chose the St Louis Stags to start a dynasty. Four seasons into this career, we have four trips to the Front Office Bowl, and only one title. So I've been fired, and will now take control of the Miami Bay Sharks, the “winners” of the 2009 #1 pick.
The Groundrules Empty Cupboard start Only can trade picks from this years draft Can accept any computer deal offered to me My roster will be comprised only of players I draft and rookie FA. Franchising will be allowed for one player per season, however the same player cannot be franchised consecutively. I must offer my guys their exact demands in FA. Except that Rookie FA's will be offered a 2 year deal. The CPU will hire my coaches More rules will follow, as needed. My first move as the new Bay Sharks managing partner is to go in and completely clean house. Cutting Ronnie Brown hurts a lot, as he's one of the best backs in the league. The Sharks had the 2008 #1 pick and selected a sweet WR(69/80). Saying good bye to him hurts as well. After the players all leave, my next course of buisiness is to hit the taxpayers up for some renovations to our stadium. We ask for 237 million dollars worth of upgrades, which will “max” out our capacity and luxury boxes. Since I project our payroll to be low the next couple of seasons, I will pay half of the costs of repair. If the taxpayers turn us down, I will look to move the Sharks. 2009 Draft We speed through the first FA period, and proceed to the draft. The previous administration has left us without a 3rd rounder, most likely due to cap shenanigans in the past. And the 2009 draft class looks to be among the most stacked classes I've ever seen. No less than 12 players of 70 or more future potential. Unfortunately there is no QB available. There are 3 big ticket WR in this draft, so I plan to trade down far enough to get one of them. Our first move is to #2, springing the Cleveland Maroons into the top slot. They offer us their 1,2,3,4 picks and select one of the 3 top WR. Buffalo gives us a first and third for the #2 pick, and we move to #3 as they select a defensive tackle. We gamble that one of the 2 WR will last at least 3 more slots, and make our final move, to #5 with the Washington Redskins. They won't give up a #2, and dont have a #3, so we take their 4th rounder. We now have 8 picks in the first 4 rounds, which we hope to construct a potent offense with. With the 5th pick in the 2009 draft, the Miami Dolphins select Pat Clinton, a wide receiver from Stanford. He has stacked combine numbers, a 4.29 40, a 6.84 shuttle, and 18 bench reps. Most importantly, right now he's 71/73, 97% developed. In round 2 we grab our qb, a guy from Virginia Tech named Gabe Wojciechowicz, we also land what we hope will be an impact shut down type corner from Bama. In round 3 we nab a studly Kicker and a FB. The rest of the way out, we nab some defensive players, and hope for some booms. After the draft we learn that Miami won't help us with our stadium, and we will look to move next year. Code:

We have a few good players, it will take us some time to put together a good squad. Offensively we plan on running a pass first type of scheme. And on defense we'll be running a 34 man defense type of setting. Of course our goal this year is to not lose every game. For now I'm only signing 46 players, i'll add more as needed(due to injury). Well, let's just say that there was nothing pretty about Miami football in 2009. Oddly enough, week 17 of the season featured a battle for the #1 pick as we lost(but did we win?) to the New Jersey Meteorites and clinched the #1 pick. Throughout the season of pain, we did get the chance to watch WR Clinton boom. A gameplan adjustment after week 14 resulted in him getting 29 catches for 420 yards over the final 3 weeks of the season. Of our 2nd rounders, QB Wojciechowicz performed rather poorly, but we feel that he can be a solid starter with a bit more experience and CB Brant Davidson recorded 7 interceptions and a 2nd team all league selection. Undrafted ILB Corwin Tuman was 2nd in the league in tackles and was named to the 2nd team all league and was defensive rookie of the year. Last edited by stevew : 04-20-2006 at 07:06 PM. |

Since we've decided to move from Miami if it's possible, we choose to attempt to move to Memphis. They want a team pretty badly so we'll see what happens.
2010 Draft We again possess the top pick in the draft. Much like last year we will again look to trade down. We'll decide to limit moving down more than 2 times in any draft as one of our gound rules. Again, this year there are some stud WR. But we will instead look to add a defensive player. We decide to trade down to #2, and then to #5, and in the process pick up 2 #2s, a #3 and 2 #4s. At 5th overall we take an ILB from Wofford named Daryl Wester. Wester has a light negotiating agent, so we feel that we may be able to get him signed to a 6 year rookie deal. In the process we bypass a stud OLB and a SS, but both have volatility issues that we don't like. We select a DE, CB, and Safety with our 3 #2s. Our warroom also likes a lineman left on the board after we make pick #5 in the second, so we package both of our 3rds for this guy. Brendan Bernhardt from Washington State is a mauling type guard with tremendous strength, and we are happy to get him in the 2nd. We grab some more developmental guy the rest of the way out. Sadly most of them will become starters. After the draft we get the news that we'll be moving to Memphis. The Hound Dogs will begin play in 2015. |

Entering the 2010 season, we signed a ton of players, taking 87 guys into camp. We cut down to 53 in camp, and while we still have a bunch of weaknesses. However our secondary and linebacking corps are shaping up. And year 2 of Wojciechowicz to Clinton will hopefully carry us to 5-7 wins. Our running game is awful suspect, we plan to use our 4th round fullback Julio Mang as our feature back.

Disaster
The 2010 season opener provides to be a disaster. An 18 yard catch and run to our star WR Pat Clinton results in a torn ACL, his season is lost. And possibly the saviour of our franchise will never become the elite threat that we need him to be. Immediately my prediction is that we won't win more than 3 games. Code:
And we finish the year with exactly 3 wins. There were some bright spots in this year, and I really think our team is just a few players away from .500. WILB Tuman lead the league in tackles this season, and is proving to be a find. With Clinton gone for the year, we get a tremendous season out of Cornelius Wilkins, a 2nd year UDFA. Our lack of running game is our ultimate downfall, as well as our run defense. QB Gabe Wojciechowicz is proving to be an effective signal caller, and we think he can be "our guy" with a bit more line help and one or two more weapons. 2011 Draft/Offseason
Pat Clinton spent the offseason recovering from his torn ACL, and its sad to say, but our scouts now view him as having about 75% of the skill he had pre injury. While he still has great hands, his routes now look quite mediocre. We hold out some hope that he may recover, however we know he may never be that guy. We have 40 players heading into the offseason, and we decide to keep several of our key free agents. WILB Corwin Tuman cashes in on his DPOY award, and hits us up for 18.8 million over the next 4 years. Dustin Holmes, a 2 year starter at LG is also resigned to a 2 year pact for around 1.3 million a season. WR Cornelius Wilkins cashes in on his 1100 yard season, and only signs for 3.8 million over 3 years. We think he needs a new agent. I look over the rest of our FA, and decide to wait on them. Since they are RFA's, we can make our final decisions after the draft. I expect re-signing season to be a bit harder next year, as we will have considerably more players hitting the market. 2011 NFL DRAFT We hold the #2 pick. And there are a number of players that we can use. There are 2 elite tackles, 2 elite defensive tackles and 2 running backs we can use. We will trade down to #6 and take whomever slips through the cracks. However there are also 2 stud QB prospects this season, and it's hard to pass them up. We pick up a 2nd, 3rd, and 4th for dropping to 6th. At 6th, we take a stud DT prospect named Vincent Huffman that we hope can eat up blockers for years. In the 2nd, stud QB Harris Boudreau is still on the board, he of the 33/83 skills. We decide that we will bypass him in the 2nd, but if he's there for our 2nd 3rd round pick, he's fair game. In the second we grab a strong DE prospect named Vincent Burks and a guard named Derrick Lowe. Lowe does not have the greatest potential(44), but we feel he will be a boom player, having posted over 40 bench reps. In the 3rd we grab a Center, and Boudreau is there when we pick. We'll take him, but we may convert him to WR or RB, as a QB of his magnitude shouldn't have lasted this long. This was an amazing draft for potential "boom" players, so we swing for the fences on nearly every pick, hoping that our collection of "workout warriors" can produce at least one or two late round gems. As of now, it doesn't look like any of our players are going to "boom," and if anything, that we reached on both of our 2nd round selections. 5th round WR Yaussy does seem to have a bunch of potential though. And 4th round runner Whitfield is our likely starter at RB. We really needed to land a tackle, but we did manage to get a couple of solid guards. |

2011 Regular Season
After toiling at the bottom of the league for the last several seasons, I feel that our roster this year is solid, and barring injuries, I project that we will win between 5 and 7 games. Miami's most popular Jew, Gabe Wojciechowicz continues to improve, we think this will be his breakout year. Especially since he has his target Clinton back, although he is diminished. For the first time in 3 years, we actually have a decent running back in our 4th rounder Kenneth Whitfield. He's a lunchpail type, but we expect better than 3.5 yards per carry. Code:

2011 Regular Season, Continued.

The 2011 season was far from a success for us, but we did set an immediate franchise record for wins with 5. Our running game and offensive line were pretty bad again. FB McReynolds spent the year at HB, but he really didnt do anything on the ground, getting a rather weak YPC. Our line allowed 46 sacks, realistically we need to cut that number in half. With our record at 2-8, and with Wojciechowicz slightly injured, Harris Boudreau, our 3rd round rookie QB was given the chance to start. While I'd like to be stating how Boudreau turned Wojciechowicz into "Wally Pipp," it was not to be, as BouDreau got hurt after 5 passes. Wojciechowicz won the game and finished 3-3 the rest of the way out. Wide Receivers Pat Clinton and rookie Darryl Jarvis both went over 1000 yards for the season. It was good to see Clinton back in form, but the Jarvis/Clinton combination also dropped 27 passes, combined. As a team we dropped 38 passes, so we will need to improve on that for the next level. Defensively we have a pretty good Secondary and Linebacking Corps, plus a solid NT. We will look to upgrade our defensive ends in the draft, and possibly look for another WLB. CB Brant Davidson is now 79/79, one of the best corners in the league. Thankfully he will be a restricted free agent after this season, and we'll get one shot for a long term deal for him. |

2012 Offseason/Draft
Despite winning 5 games last year, we still received the #3 overall pick in the draft. With a stud Tackle and running back among the top 3 picks in this draft, we hope one slides to #3. But first things first, as we have some restricted free agents to deal with. Code:
We start first with our quarter back, and despite balking at his asking price of $67,750,000 for 6 years, we decide to resign Gabe Wojciechowicz. His deal will be very bad in the future if he doesn't produce. But out of that 67, he only wants 12 million in bonus money, so we can waive him in the future relatively easily. Brant Davidson is also a bit greedy and wants $75,820,000 for 5 yrs. Since the cap is going up by around 5 million a season, we decide reluctantly to give it to him. He is probably the best corner in the league, but we'll hate his deal by year 5, when he counts for about 23 million. We are still 50 million under the cap, and have 40 players under contract after those 2 signings. I also resign our kicker, one of the best in the league, for about 4 million a season and one of our DE rushers for around 1.5 a year. We'll decide on the rest of the players after our draft. The draft breaks well for us, and Louis Gillespie, a RB from Arizona State is there for us at #3. In the second we ignore some other very good players and take Lionel Aspell, a LT, which is a big need for us. We alternate offense/defense the rest of the way out. Eugene Hopper, our 7th rounder, is a player to possibly watch. This CB out of Toledo might become a great corner. Code:
As we sign our rookies, it already appears that Hopper has gotten better. 6th round tackle Eriksen is also showing a slight boom. He looks to be the starter at RT, and hopefully him and Aspell can solve our OL problems. We decide to retain some of our free agents, and sign a multitude of camp bodies. We take 74 into camp, before the cut down and immediately I notice that my first and second round picks have slipped a bit. Our 6th round tackle now looks better than our first round guy. 2012 Season
Going into our season, i feel confident about our team. We have what I think will be a pretty good passing game. This is also the first year that we have a good running back, as well. Our line is suspect, so we do think we'll still give up a ton of sacks. On defense, we've started to put all the pieces together. We still lack a dominating DE, but we think that our collection of part-time rush specialists will fill in nicely. I think that our secondary is pretty solid, although we'll be looking for more corners in this years draft. I project a .500 season, and I wouldn't be suprised if we make the playoffs. Code:

2012 Season/Results
The Bay Sharks suffer a big loss in pre-season as our 3rd wide out Cornelius Wilkins tears his ACL. His hands and route running will be missed. We start the season on fire, winning our first 3 games. We slow down considerably, and lose the next 3 games. Gabe Wojciechowicz gets hurt in the 8th game, with our record now at 4-4. Once again 2nd year QB Harris Boudreau from Penn State is given the chance to start, and to "Pipp-ize" Gabe. And much like the previous year, he once again fails. Gabe recovers and we score 37, 34, 42, and 41 points in the next 4 games, winning 3 of them. Most importantly, our 20-17 win over New England in week 15 gives us 8 victories. Our week 17 game is lost and we finish 8-8. Next year we will be in the playoffs. Code:
Looking over the end of season stats, I am pleasantly suprised by several things. Our YPA in the passing game is stellar. Wojciechowicz finishes the season with a rating of 96.7 and over 4000 passing yards. He's still sacked 43 times, however. 2nd year WR Darryl Jarvis, a 4th round draft pick, has an absolutely amazing season. He lead the league in catches and yards, and was named to the first team all-league. Unfortunately, he still dropped 12 passes. Rookie RB Louis Gillespie made the most of his opportunity, and nabbed over 1000 yards rushing despite having limited chances in the run game. He needs to improve his consistency though, as he had 4 starts where he averaged less than 3.5 yards per carry. On defense Corwin Tuman captured his second defensive player of the year award, leading the league in tackles. As a team, we did a very poor job of forcing turnovers, only getting 11 interceptions. 21 sacks is also not the type of pressure I would like our team to be putting on the QB either. 2013 Offseason

McReynolds Shepard and Simmons are all unrestricted. I make an offer to each of them. Buddy Shepard gives us a bit of a scare, at one point in time deciding over 8 offers to sign. Thankfully for us he decides to take a few hundred thousand less and stay at home. We'd have probably had to burn a first or second rounder for his replacement, so now we have some flexibility. I decided to slightly modify the original house rules for this challenge, and I will not be using the Franchise Tag any longer. Instead I reserve the right to make the last year voidable to any restricted FA deal longer than 3 years. As far as the restricteds go, I decide to retain all of them, except for a couple mediocre ones. RG Bernhardt signs for pretty big money on a 5 year deal. And along with the new stipulations, he'll get a voidable option for year 5. Most of the other restricteds settle for 2 year deals in the 1.5 million per range. We draft 19th across the board, so I will look to take the BPA whenever possible. At some point in the draft I'd like to get a linebacker, defensive lineman, and offensive linemen. I could also use more depth in the secondary. When our pick comes up, I see that the draft has a bit of depth, but no overwhelmingly great players, so instead of pulling the strings on an average Tackle, I gamble that one of the players I like will fall into the second round. We pick up the #1 pick in the 2nd and 3rd for #19. Kent Langford, a corner from Oregon state who we like, drops into the second round. He looks to be a great complement for Davidson, our other corner. With our other second rounder we nab a promising OLB from West Virginia named Juan Wheeler. We may opt to move him inside for depth reasons. In the 3rd come a couple of linemen. Nobody spectacular, but hopefully they add some depth. In the 4th we nab a promising wideout from UNLV named Broderick Humphries. He may not amount to anything, but his combine scores make him seem to be a breakout potential. The rest of the way we take mainly camp fodder. After the draft, the Ravens make us a promising offer. A first round pick for our backup "stud in waiting" QB Boudreau. The Ravens went 7-9 the previous season, and lost their franchise QB to FA. We decide that the upside to this deal is too good to pass up. Plus it is a pretty fair deal, Boudreau is the 5th highest rated QB in future potential, he's a possible big time star. We will, however, be thin at the position, and absolutely screwed in case of injury to Gabe Wojciechowicz. Code:

2013 Training Camp
Since we currently don't have a backup QB worth a darn, I am quite active in the rookie FA market. Anyone with a pulse and a bit of potential ability is brought in. Our scouts uncover a great receiving talent from Baylor named CJ West, who went undrafted. He could possibly be our #3 WR this year. We take 73 players into training camp, so once again the cut down is quite hard. We weed through the graveyard of QB's. As I get to the TE position, I notice that 4th year starter Robbie Malone has gotten considerably better over the past season. He now is approximately 20 points higher rated(60) than he was before last season. Our line is starting to come together nicely, and I really have a hard time letting go of some of my guys. I opt to place 4 of them on the inactive list, as I've found you can never have too many decent linemen. Since we primarily pass the ball, I've invested mainly in pass blocking specialists. RB Gillespie will have to make his own holes. In the secondary, I really like the looks of rookie corner Kent Langford. He'll be a great nickleback this offseason, and next year will be a solid starter. We cut 5th round pick Gus Cole as he seems to have regressed. At this point I still have a hard time with cutting guys we draft, as we can always use more depth. I feel like with a 5th rounder we should be able to nab a potential starter, at best. And at worst, at least a backup. I plan to do draft retrospectives for each class after 5 years. So next season it will be interesting to see what became of our initial draft class. I finally trim the roster down to 55(with one on IR), I'll have to cut 2 more guys at some point, although I'm secretly hoping to be able to IR stash a couple young promising guys. Code:

2013 Season
At the midpoint of the 2013 season, we sit at 4-4. Once again our defense is less than expected, and I am mildly annoyed. I make some slight adjustments, which i hope will work.. Our offensive line is playing better than expected, though, as Woji has only been sacked 15 times. Both of our WR are playing out of their heads, on pace for at least 1300 yards for both. Clinton is an UFA after this season, and we will attempt to keep him if possible. Jarvis is a safe bet to return since he is a restricted FA. However, we do think that retaining both will be nearly impossible. We start the 2nd half on fire, and run our mark to 9-4. Unfortunately we lose the next 3 games, including a 30-28 game to Buffalo that decides the division title. A 9-7 we stay home this year, and I am very dissapointed by that. Looking at the overall numbers, though, our defense improves quite a bit. Down the stretch we lost by 1, 1, and 2 points respectively. A win in any of those games would have put us in the playoffs. Our Receiving Corps had a great season, getting open and making plays. Jarvis needs to get some stickum, as he once again posts double digits in drops. QB "Woji" again posts a rating in the 90s. Our O-Line is much improved, LT Simmons was almost cut 2 seasons prior, and this year he allows only 4 sacks in 16 starts. CB Davidson and OLB Lester both make the first team all league in their respective positions. The Bad Our Defense simply isn't getting enough pressure on the QB. Sacks were up a bit this year, but pressures were down. So in the end, we only come up slightly ahead. The Ugly CB Maurice Howe once again posted miserable numbers as our #2 CB. He'll be gone after this season, I only regret I didnt accept a preseason offer of a #4 pick for his worthless ass. RB Gillespie had close to 1000 yards, but we did a poor job of getting him the ball enough, and he did a pretty poor job by running for less than 4 YPC. A 97 yard gallop in the final game of the season enabled him to break 100 yards for the first time all season. Even worse was that we had to use FB McReynolds as his primary backup, and he got less than 3 ypc, and nearly 100 carries. That's a lot of missed opportunity. Trade Update For those following at home, we sent former 3rd rounder Harris Boudreau to the Baltimore Ravens for their #1 in this years draft. Boudreau posted the following line this season. Code:
He is currently rated 70/81 however, so if the Ravens act smart and retain him for a number of years, it's a great pickup for them. For us, it will also prove to be beneficial, as the Ravens surrender to us the #8 pick in the draft. The Ravens resign him for 28 million over 4 years, following the season. 2009 Draft Retrospective.
Amateur Draft Report: Rnd 1 - Pat Clinton, WR, Stanford Taken 1(5), Clinton has posted 299 catches and over 4700 yards in 5 seasons. Keep in mind that he missed his 2nd season nearly completely, so he's been a solid pick, despite having sketchy hands. He'll always be a big "what if" because the injury took away quite a bit of his ability. Rnd 2 - Gabe Wojciechowicz, QB, Virginia Tech Taken 2(2), he's the franchise QB for us. In 5 years and 75 starts he has thrown for 97tds vs 55 interceptions, almost 1800 yards, and has a career rating of 83.6. He may never be the best QB in the league, but he's a "Git R Done" lunchpail type. If our line can continue to keep the defense off of him, he should have a long, solid career. Rnd 2 - Brant Davidson, CB, Alabama Taken 2(1) Davidson is one of the best Corners in the entire league. Over 78 starts he has 21 interceptions, 82 defenses, and a pd % of 20.1. He's also a solid run supporter, with 342 career tackles. Has been named to the first team all league once, and the 2nd team also. Is signed through 2016, giving him at least 8 years with us. Rnd 3 - Leon McReynolds, FB, VMI Drafted 3(3)McReynolds has been a solid player at FB for us, often filling in at RB, although poorly. He was given a pretty big contract after his 4th season, and I'm already regretting it. Was named to the 2011 all league team at FB, however. Rnd 3 - Phillip Oda, K, Texas Taken 3(2), Oda is one of the leagues better rated kickers. Is a bit expensive now, so I will likely let him go after this season. His 75% conversion rate on FG's is nothing to write home about. Rnd 4 - Joseph Battle, DT, Penn State Taken 4(5). He started 2 seasons for us, and lasted 3 years on the roster until he was cut. He's out of the league now. Rnd 4 - Buddy Shepard, ILB, Southern Utah Taken 4(2), Shepard has been a solid player for us, starting all 5 of his seasons. He's nothing spectacular, and we will look to find his replacement in the upcoming draft. Rnd 4 - Brett Hillery, OLB, Pittsburgh Drafted 4(1), started his first season at SLB. Flamed out when a much better player took his job, and has now retired. Rnd 5 - Reggie Humphries, DE, Iowa State Taken 5(1) and has been a solid 3rd down rusher for us. We'll probably keep him around for a few more years. Rnd 6 - Norbert Van Pelt, DE, Northern Iowa Taken 6(1), he lasted 2 seasons as a starter for us. We didnt resign him after his first 3 year contract was up, he's bounced around the league a bit, and will likely retire soon. Rnd 7 - Justin Chadwick, WR, Rutgers 7(1) pick lasted 1 season, played in 16 games and got 14 catches. Currently takes advantage of his Rutgers degree by working as a banker on Wall Street. And thus concludes the review of the initial draft of the Miami Bay Sharks. This will be a regularly updated offseason retrospective, hopefully looking back at a class at its 5, 10 and 15 year mark. On the RFA front, our biggest target is SE Darryl Jarvis. He, however, wants 100 million over 6 years and 20 million plus to sign. Which is way too rich for my blood. LG Lowe is also a big target, but he comes back for 4 years and around 23 million. I keep several players, but I'm faced with the dilemma of what to do with SS Banks and Jarvis. In an NFL situation, i could make them one year tenders and if nobody offers them a contract, and retain them. I decide that I will attempt to simulate this in 2nd FA, and I'll budget each one a "first round tender" of 3 million dollars for one year. We'll see what happens when i get there, after the draft. Clinton accepts our offer, and really did not get a lot of other offers. We definately overpaid for him. Thankfully the New York Gladiators take CB Maurice Howe off of our hands. We were tired of turning down the fan's requests to make a #28 jersey(his number) with the nameplate "Toast" on the back. Our other 2 free agents come back, and we enter the draft with 44 players under contract, the #8 pick in the first, and #22 picks in rounds 1-7. 2014 Draft
At #8 I see at least 3 players I like, so I contemplate trading down, but finally opt to select Clay Boyer, a gamebreaking WR from Tennessee. There was another Tackle I really liked and when he's still on the board at #12, I offer #22 in the first and 2nd for the pick, and its accepted. Marty Knobbs, a LT from Fresno state will hopefully be a great player for us. In the 3rd we nab Jackie Hernandez, a developmental LT with good upside. The rest of the way we take some developmental defensive players, a great punter, and CB Jermaine O'Neal, Jr., son of the basketball star in round 7. Code:
After the draft, 3rd rounder Hernandez looks like he should have gone in the first, posting a future potential of 68. Unfortunately Knobbs, sucks Knobs. He's only 16/43, which is suprising since he had awesome combine numbers of 42 bench reps and good agility ones. We won't be offering him a contract. WR Boyer looks like a great starter. 2014 Training Camp
I attempted several times to work out a 1 year deal with WR Jarvis, to emulate the 4th year "RFA" contract, and he wouldn't even sign a 1 year 9 million dollar deal. So we decide to let him walk to FA. Where he promptly signs for 680K on a one year deal. Stupid FOF. Our WR corps are in trouble this season. The final training camp of Miami Bay Sharks Football has us taking 60 players into camp. A big cut early on is Lionel Aspell, a 3rd year LT we took in the 2nd round. I had expected him to be an anchor at that position, but after a very shaky rookie year, he spent the entire 2013 season inactive. 7th rounder Jermaine O'Neal, Jr also does not make it out of camp. After inexplicably not signing his rookie deal until after the camp stage was over, he was generally not professional enough for us. Next year the Hound Dogs will have cap troubles when they move to Memphis. Code:

2014 Season
I had anticipated great success in 2014, and I was highly wrong. We finished with a record of 8-8. 48 million dollar WR Pat Clinton only was able to start 9 games, and had one TD. Woji had a lack of WR talent, and seemingly regressed this season. His rating of 71 was almost as bad as his rookie mark. Rookie SE Clint Boyer dropped 14 passes, although he did get 900+ yards receiving. With a number of free agents this offseason, and a potentially bad pick(there are 8 8-8 teams, which will pick from 12-20), the Bay Sharks are in trouble. Our new fans in Memphis may see yet another rebuilding phase. As far as bright spots go, ILB Corwin Tuman recorded 133 tackles this season and made the defensive 2nd team. He's been a stalwart for our defense thus far, and has recorded almost 800 tackles over 6 years. Unfortunately he will be a free agent this offseason, and we may not be able to keep him. CB Brant Davidson also earned his massive check this season. He was named to the first team all league after recording 7 interceptions and 24 deflections. His PD% of 21.8 was tops in the league among qualifiers. Kicker Phillip Oda set himself up nicely for a big paycheck this offseason by making 44 of 49 field goal attempts. We'll likely draft his replacement this offseason. Our weak offense this year seemed too confident to settle for the FG cause of our kicker, and if we don't give them that cushion, perhaps they will try a bit more on 4th down next year. Code:

Moving to Memphis(2015)
As the moving trucks depart Miami, we eagerly await our arrival to Memphis. The city built us a state of the art retractable roof stadium which holds 99K people. It has a full allotment of luxury boxes(399) and box seats(19900). After losing a total of 133 million from the past 5 years, it will be nice to finally get some real revenue. 2015 Free Agency Preparations
Finally the effects of the Cap have set in. We only have 16 million in space, and only have 31 players under contract. For the first time in 6 seasons, I actually look through and trim some players based on them not being paid in line with their performance. Longterm FB Leon McReynolds is let go, as he is due 2.3 million, and isn't really integral to what we do anymore. Another cut is FS Marc Robbins, a long term player for us. Suprisingly we also get word that LT Timothy Simmons has decided to retire. He started 71 games at left tackle for us, although he barely played last year. With 29 players under contract, and slightly over 20 million available, we decide to proceed with free agency. I have informed the agent of RG Brenden Bernhardt that he may be cut if we need more space. Bernhardt only made 7 of 42 key run blocks last year and allowed 11 sacks. He's due a base salary of 4.2 million this year. Code:

2015 Free Agency
I've decided to contact the agents for several of our key free agents and try to work out deals. Much as I expected, Kicker Phillip Oda expects to be well compensated, seeking 4 years and 20 million. I decide to pass. Both of our inside linebackers are free this year, and I think that I'll probably lose one, if not both. Multiple DPOY winner Corwin Tuman wants $73,460,000 over 5 years, which is much more than I'm prepared to pay. As an UDFA, I'm glad that he will finally get a huge payday. We shake hands, and I wish him the best of luck. He's truly been a class act here. If for some reason he doesn't get a contract before the draft, we'll resume negotiations. His partner in crime on the inside, Buddy Shepard, has more realistic demands, wanting about 6 million a season for 5 years. I go ahead and make him an offer. FB Julio Mang wants 11 million for 4 years, and that's very fair. I now regret cutting McReynolds, as I did not realize that Mang was a free agent. Hopefully Mang comes back. I also make offers to both of our safeties, as well as our TE. And I also resign 9 restricteds which mostly look to be solid backups. On day one of free agency, ILB Corwin Tuman signs a 107 million dollar deal to play for the New York Gladiators for the next 6 seasons. With 45 million of that over the first 3 seasons, he's done well for himself. DE Marco Sherman, a player who's started for us for 5 seasons is getting a ton of interest from Seattle and signs a 5 year deal for 38 million. We didnt even think he was worth a small offer, fwiw. K Oda signs with New Jersey for around 4 million a season. As free agency concludes, we are able to sign the 6 players we had targeted to keep. We enter the draft with 43 players under contract. I'll probably attempt to trade down multiple times in the upcoming draft, and look almost exclusively for defense. Almost all of our major defensive players hit free agency within 2 years. 2010 Draft Retrospective
OLB Daryl Lester 1(5) Lester is one of the best players in the league at his position. He's made one all league first team. As a rookie he signed a 6 year contract, but we don't think he will be in our price range for a resigning. LDE Marco Sherman, 2(1) Ho-hum type of player for us. He did start 67 games in 5 years for us, but he only recorded 18 sacks and a PR% of 4.5. Probably has been a part of our defensive struggles the more that I look at it. Somehow he got 38 million over 5 years from Seattle, I think he's worth less than a 3rd of that. CB Maurice Howe 2(2) Howe re-defined the term "toast" for us. Totally a wasted pick. After 4 years he got a grand total of 2 interceptions with us, and had a career PD% of less than 19. We were glad to see him sign with the New York Gladiators where he still plays. FS Marc Robbins 2(5) Another wasted pick. Robbins suffered a major injury after his 3rd season, and missed the next year. He was recently cut for cap space issues, and I doubt that he will play in the league again. G Brenden Bernhardt 2(6) Bernhardt has been on the bubble for being cut this offseason. He makes a healthy contract, but his performance was very weak in 2014. He's very weak on both blocking techniques, but he is very strong which helps him compensate. A poor 2015 will have him on the unemployment line. SS Rusty Bradford 4(1) Bradford is a 5 year starter for us. But he's always been a guy that I've looked to upgrade. He's around a 60 tackles a year type of guy, and 1-2 interceptions. Passable, and I guess the fact that he was a 4th rounder is a bonus. FB Julio Mang 4(2) On and off starter at FB and RB for us, he's been a solid player his time. We were able to keep him for 4 more seasons, and he's the only FB on our roster right now. T Walt McGee 4(5) McGee was a developmental type of player, he appeared in 19 career games, starting 4. He was passed by better players and is out of the league. G Percy Fuller5(1) Fuller lasted one season and was cut for better players. Out of the league. C Jimmy Baltuskonis 6(1) Started 4 seasons for us, and stayed with the team through 5. As a backup I couldn't justify his salary demands, and he was let go. Currently on the St. Louis Rams as their backup Center. CB Shane Armstrong 7(1) Armstrong played 3 years for us, and started 10 games. Got extensive use as a nickle back, but he never got a 2nd contract. Retired. 2015 Draft
The Hound Dogs have some serious needs, so I decide to trade down from #16 to #1 in the 2nd round. I also pick up an additonal #3, upgrade my forth rounder from 16th to first in that round, and turn my 6th rounder into a high 5th. Not a major move for us, but it should give us a slightly better chance of landing more depth. In the 2nd I grab a pair of linebackers, OLB Leslie Ponce from Nicholls State will likely be Lester's eventual replacement at SLB. ILB Mo Shea from Kentucky will probably be a day one starter, and hopeful replacement for Tuman. In the third I grab a WR named A.J. Sousa from Middle Tennesee State, and another OLB. At 4(1) I grab a kicker. In the 5th I grab QB Stan "MS Paint" Kamilewicz. We hear he likes to make funny drawings. As a 5th rounder this kid is a major steal, and if he lives up to his potential he could be a future starting QB for us. Later on in the 5th, we also grab another QB named J.T. Barker. We project him more as an ATH, and will try to change him into a WR, RB or FS. In the 7th, it's a project type DE. Code:
A quick evaluation of our draft shows that most of the players are about as skilled as we thought they would be. No major drops or boosts for our rookies. Both of our 5th round QB's look to be steals, I would have graded them as late first round prospects. I bring 65 gents into training camp this season, as usual it's a collection of QB's and other players. The cut down to 53 is fairly easy. This years team may be good, but after 3 .500ish seasons in a row, I'm not holding my breath. After an initial excitement ticket push, we only sell 20k season tickets. People will have to see a winner before they show up, apparently. With only approximately 5 million in cap space next season, and multiple key players to retain, its entirely likely that CB Davidson, QB Wojciechowicz and WR Clinton might be in their final year with the organization. Combined, cutting or trading all 3 would save around 30 million dollars alone. Code:

2016 Regular Season
The season starts out very slowly for us, and after 6 weeks the team is 2-3-1. I'm contemplating moving on to another franchise as this one appears to be cursed. But we rebound and win 9 of the last 10. By week 16 we have clinched the division and a first round bye. For week 17 we elect to let the rookie Kamilewicz start as the game is essentially meaningless. This year has seen a lot of injuries. WR Clinton played well, but missed 5 starts. We'll probably cut him following the season. Injuries dog us into the playoffs as Clinton and our starting QB are both injured. AC Divisional Round Code:

Unfortunately the luck runs out for us in Pittsburgh. WR Darryl Jarvis ran back a kick for 100 yards in the 3rd quarter after we tied the score at 10. 2015 Reflections

In 2015 our shift back towards the run seemed to work great. We didn't do as well as I would have hoped in the YPC category, however. Converted QB Barker does not look to be a starter at RB in the future, so we may draft Gillespie's replacement this offseason. Our defense this year was absolutely hawkish when it came to turnovers. I doubt we can be +18 every season, but its a good sign. Individually WR Boyer had a great second season. He only dropped 4 passes, and caught 73 for over 1100 yards. Pat Clinton lost a step, but still performed solidly. QB Wojciechowicz performed pretty well this year, with a rating over 94. He has 2 seasons remaining on his contract, if he decides to leave for greener pastures we are confident in his backup. Rookie Kicker Leo Lynch hit on 81% of his field goals, but his kickoffs were pretty weak. We'll have to sign a kickoff specialist at some point. He made the all league 2nd team. CB Davidson counts for over 23 million dollars in 2016, but with his 2015 performance, I see no way I can let him go. He grabbed 6 interceptions and defensed 29 passes, all the while playing almost exclusively in single coverage. His partner in crime in the secondary, Kent Langford, rebounded nicely from his year 2 injury with 6 interceptions. |

We knew that "Cap Hell" was just a matter of time, and know we will feel its effects. We only have 34 players signed and have only 4 million available to us. Reluctantly we let go of WR Pat Clinton and G Brenden Bernhardt. Both are great players, but they are expensive. In a "normal" career I'd probably try to negotiate them down, but that isn't an option here. Daryl Lester, our SLB, wants 70 million over 5 years. That is way out of our price range now. Starting NT Vincent Huffman wants 54 million over 5 years. Losing him will be big, and I really don't have a replacement. But he's not worth that kind of money. Reluctantly, I decide that I'll have to play ball. I resign most of our restricted FAs, except for CB Langford. He wants $73,180,000 over 5 years, after having one good year out of 3. We'll opt to see if he will take a large one year deal at some point, for now, we won't deal with him. Our starting Center wants a lot of money also, so we decide to let him walk. So that means that starters at WR, DE, OLB, CB, G, and C will not be coming back, and NT is possibly gone as well. While I have some solid backups, there is no way that I can possibly expect to replace all those players, and we will be weakened. FA breaks badly for us on day one, as Vincent Huffman signs in Cinncinatti for 67 million over 6 years. OLB Lester takes 106 million over 6 years from Atlanta. I manage to keep 4 of the 5 auxiliary players I tried to sign. |

We select 28th in a very deep draft. Since I've had such a bad time with third rounders, I may package my 2nd and 3rd to move up in the draft if possible. In the first round, I grab a center from Penn State. I want to trade down, but there are no realistic opportunities to. He'll start the first season, though. By the second, when I grab a NT, my draft board is fuct. Players that I had anticipated lasting into the 3rd and 4th were gobbled up quickly. In the third I find a true FS, who also looks like an immediate starter, but he's not really a "need" player. The 4th brings a RB, the 5th a cover corner. I quickly grab an OLB and tackle in the 6th and 7th. This draft will set us back a long time. Code:

In the final exhibition game, we lose our starting LG for the entire season. And also our starting TE will miss about half the season as well. So things are not starting out well for us. Our team performs pretty well, after a slow start, and qualifies for the playoffs at 9-6-1. And we are quickly bounced in the wild card round. Code:
Now, some 7 seasons after starting in Miami/Memphis, I believe the team is farther away from the title as ever. My draft record is pretty bad once you get out of the first round, so I'm not sure that we will ever become elite. So its back to the drawing board for my system. |

The main difference between this season and the last is that we didn't force nearly as many turnovers. Our defense is a lot better than I had thought, an edge rusher and a nose tackle are a couple of things I will go looking for in the draft. Brant Davidson once again is first team all league at CB, despite perfoming below his normal standards. RB Gillespie perfomed well, but it was his walk year. Unlike last year, we are in pretty decent cap shape. I sign most of our RFA's. Notably, former 6th Round steal LT Jackie Hernandez wants 87 million over 5 years. With no other decent tackles on our roster, I decide to bite my lips and give it to him. Thanks to cap flexibility I am able to make offers to all of our free agents that I wish to retain. Signing news in FA is great, initially. RB Gillespie takes our 5 year deal(5th year voidable) for 75 million. With nobody in the pipeline to replace him, I feel thankful that he stays. Brant Davidsion also take a huge deal for 5 years as well. We absolutely have to get it done within the next 2 years, or we will be in major trouble. All of the players I wanted to keep resign easily, I consider this FA period to be a major success for us. We take 48 players and 5 million of cap space into the draft, where we will pick 20th. Seems as if I missed the 2011 retrospective before last years draft. I'll have to do this one and 2012 to get caught up.
2011 Draft Retrospective Amateur Draft Report: Rnd 1(6) - Vincent Huffman, DT, Buffalo Pretty good NT for our defense for all 5 years he was here. Although he was never a major pash rush force. We attempted to keep him when he hit FA, but couldn't. Currently a starter in Cincinnati. Rnd 2 - Derrick Lowe, G, Wake Forest Lowe started 78 of his first 80 games with the Hound Dogs. However a high ankle sprain cost him the entire 2016 season and the chance to void his contract and become a free agent. Was the 2014 league's strongest man. Rnd 2 - Vincent Burks, DE, North Carolina State Burks has mainly been a defensive rotational player with us over his 6 seasons. In 2016 he got the chance to start and responded with 10 sacks. However he is very poor against the run and is better suited for spot duty. Rnd 3 - Harris Boudreau, QB, Penn State Boudreau is one of the better rated QB's in the league, however he currently plays in Baltimore. Trading him brought back the pick that we used to select current star WR Clay Boyer. He has never really had a great season, however, and has a career rating of 80.4 and a w/l mark of 21-39. Rnd 3 - Trent Sherman, C, North Carolina State Sherman lasted 2 seasons, but was only active for one. I probably destroyed his career by attempting to move him to LT. Out of the league. Rnd 4 - Kenneth Whitfield, RB, Arizona State Stuck around for 3 years, but was pretty pisspoor. In 2011 he managed to run the ball more than 100 times for an average of 2.99 ypc. Retired. Rnd 4 - Darryl Jarvis, WR, California A star WR, although he has questionable hands. Too bad he now plays for Pittsburgh. Looking back I should have caved to his outrageous demands and re-signed him. Rnd 5 - Brett Yaussy, WR, Colgate Stuck around for 3 years. I remember being pretty high on him after the draft, but he just petered out over time. Never got much of a chance, and he retired. Rnd 6 - David Banks, S, Louisville Banks has played in every game in his 6 seasons, starting in 65. While he's no stud, he's had some pretty good seasons. Obviously he's the type of value that you want to be getting out of the 6th round. Rnd 7 - Bill Thornton, DE, Texas A&M Got cut in training camp, lasted one season in the league. Considering some of the lines he has had, a career average of 4.3 yards per carry is pretty good. Rnd 2 - Lionel Aspell, T, Colorado Aspell lasted one season as the starter and then got beat out by a better player, never to play in the league again. At 2(3) certainly he was a wasted pick. Rnd 3 - Spencer Shehee, DE, West Virginia Lasted 5 seasons on the roster, but never made much of an impact. He did start in 2016, but that's simply due to a numbers crunch at DE. Isn't likely to be back in 2017. Rnd 4 - Grady Sklenicka, G, Jacksonville State Has stuck around for 5 seasons as a spot starter, and moved into the starting lineup last year. He posted all pro type numbers(43.8 KRB%, .3 S%) in his first season as a starter, dispite not having very great looking ratings. Only wanted a one year deal in 2017, so he's likely to depart for more money in a year. Rnd 5 - Lawrence Lindsay, DT, Valdosta State I find no records of this guy ever playing, so it's likely he did not survive training camp his rookie year. Rnd 6 - Michael Eriksen, T, Virginia Tech Ericksen has been a pretty solid starter at RT for all of his 5 seasons. Despite having pretty average ratings(56 RB, 36 PB), he's managed to keep defenders off of the QB pretty well. Around 1.0 S% the last year. Rnd 7 - Eugene Hopper, CB, Toledo He's stayed on the roster for 5 years running, and is an average dimeback. Nothing special, but passable for a 7th round guy. 2017 Draft
We have the 20th pick across the board. This draft seems to be stocked with some pretty good defensive players, so I will attempt to move up into top 11 picks this year. After all the DE's get drafted early, I look to trade back into the 2nd round. I move into the 6th picks in the 2nd and 3rd, and upgrade my 5(20) pick into 4(6) for trading down. With my first 2nd rounder, I grab a mauling guard who is among the strongest players in the draft(41 reps). I also take another OLB who may be moved to DE. In the 3rd I grab a possible starter at NT, and a stud ATH QB. The rest of the way out I draft for promise. Code:
Initial impressions show that 7th round RB Wright might turn into a steal. He already looks about 10 points higher than when he was drafted. 3rd round NT Carpenter looks a little worse than I remember. Although he's probably a starter still. 2nd round LB Manning converts into a great looking DE. The rest of my picks are about as expected. 3rd round ATH QB McIver doesnt boom like I had hoped. |

2017 Training Camp
ILB Mo Shea announced that he would be holding out for a new contract before training camp. Since I do not renegotiate contracts, I decided to let him reconsider. When he does not report after camp is finished, I traded him to St. Louis for a 5th round pick this year. I enter camp with 72 bodies, and the cutdown to 53 is pretty hard this year. Rookie QB prospect McIver was the talk of camp, and may be the starter in a year if Wojciecowicz leaves via free agency. We're switching to a 43 defense this year, and with a lot of scrubs on our roster, I'm probably going to get creative with players playing out of position. Code:
