I'm probably having a brain blank here but ... wouldn't out-to-sea be potentially worse (by causing a serious tsunami) than on-dry-land (depending on the area)?

Errumm...it was a seaquake that caused all the devastation last time, wasn't it? At any rate, it may not be as bad because I don't think eastern Indonesia is as populated, though I'm sure the warning centers around the Pacific are keeping an eye out.

JAKARTA, Indonesia - A magnitude-7.7 undersea earthquake rocked eastern Indonesia early Saturday, the U.S. Geological Survey said. There was no danger of a tsunami.

The earthquake occurred in the Banda Sea about 120 miles south of Ambon city, the USGS said. It occurred at a depth of 212 miles.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said no destructive tsunami threat existed.

There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.

Indonesia, the world's largest archipelago, is prone to seismic upheaval because of its location atop a volcanically active region known as the Pacific "Ring of Fire."

A Dec. 26, 2004, earthquake of magnitude 9 off the Indonesian coast generated a tsunami that left at least 216,000 people dead or missing and nearly 2 million homeless in 11 countries.

The true toll will probably never be known — many bodies were lost at sea and in some cases the populations of some places struck were not accurately known.

Jon: If it was out to sea.. then unless it was in the right place to provide and just as important GUIDE the rush of water, then it would be safe.

If it's on dry-land.. it's gonna look like a freakin bomb hit. for tens of miles around

Here's hoping they're right about nothing coming of this one. Got a friend who's working near Jakarta right now. She got hit in the big storms when she was in the Cayman's a few years ago so I'd hoped she'd had her share of bad weather luck already taken care of.
