Where Has All the Defense Gone?

I know this isn't a tremendously recent occurrence, but what's with all the obnoxious offense in college football? Every bowl game winner is scoring 40-50 points. Whatever happened to a good, old-fashioned 17-14 score?

Do they need to change the rules of the game to give the defense a shot?

Well just look at who played today...

Goofers - They never play any D.
Northwestern - See above.
UCLA - Classic Pac-10 team. Lotta O. No D.

I'm not sure if there were any top 20 D's that played today other than Miami and LSU.

LSU is playing plenty of D - LSU 37 - MIA 3

Though , alot of it has to do with matchups, the quality differential is quite severe outside of the top 15 and I think D's get so use to playing crappy teams that they get caught off guard when they play an equal team.

So - it's an aberration? I doubt it.

Not so much classical as UCLA has always had better NFL players from the defensive side

Well they may have NFL talent on the defensive side, but they are still ranked 111th in total defense.

I think talent is more spread around all of NCAA 1A than it used to be. So if you have limited talent, which side of the ball would you play them on?

I expect there will be some close defensive matchups in the top tier bowl games coming up in the next few days.

Also, teams have 3 weeks to a month to prepare for Bowl Games. With that amount of time, coaches can find all sorts of spots to exploit in defenses. It's easier to prepare a offensive gameplan against a defense, than it is to prepare a defensive gameplan for an offense. Defense for the most part is reactive, so being proactive on offense give it an inherent edge.

edit for clarification
