OT - What do you call your friends

It's been pointed out to me by my wife that I refer to my male friends almost exclusively by last name. The theory is that it's some sort of frathouse idiocy combined with a reaction to a lifetime spent watching sports coverage.

I'm just curious as to whether I'm the only one.

Oh, so you think you're so cool because you have friends, huh? Well, that might be true, but you don't need to rub it in the faces of the rest of us!

First names only. I find the last-names approach irritating, and I think that's precisely because of its frathouse-ness. No offense, Leafs.

The strange thing is that around my friends, we'll often use first names. But when I'm talking about someone else -- such as telling my wife who was at the party, that sort of thing -- it's all last names.

Judging by the poll so far, apparently I am indeed alone on this. Screw you all.

I went with last name though because two of my closest friends are Ryan so no one calls them that.

Really?

Damn.

Forget the Pistons. You getting married is the upset of the year.

I only use last names on occasion... for instance, when I have two friends in the same crowd with the first name...

As to the topic. If two or more of my friends are together we often refer to those not present by their last names. Only rarely do we use someone's last name to address them directly.

*claps* Nicely done.

There are more than a couple of people who call me radii IRL. In my own (limited) defense though, outside of this subset of geeks it's almost entirely first names... I don't have any friends who I refer to by last name I don't think. Well, except the one whose last name is is login ID on angband... I went over a year before I knew what his first name was.

I'm from the school of using last names whenever there is two or more people who have the same first names, but if they don't its either first names or nicknames.

I kinda do all of them. I have nicknames for some, first names for a few, and last names for quite a few. It actually differs based on the circle of friends. But, in my cell phone, most are listed by a nickname if I have one for them.

It depends on the person I'm talking about and the person I'm talking to. I guess generally first name though.

Should I take that as an insult to radii and myself?

Either way, that is hands down the funniest thing I have ever read in my whole life!!!!

It is usually a mix for me too. I would say, though, that most of my friends have some sort of a nickname that they are referred to as at some point, so that is the answer I chose.

I go with mostly nicknames, and a lot of those are combinations of my friends first and last names, and in a lot of cases I pronounce the name different than is correct, or use the spanish equivalent to some names.

Exactly. It varies for each friend really. I have a few close friends that I call by their first name, and a few close friends that I call by their last name. I had one pretty close friend (until we lost touch) that I would call by his nickname, but none since.

I voted last name, but upon further reflection, realize that i do all 3. You should add that to the poll.

First name or nickname in person. Last name when referring to them in a conversation with another friend. Never in a frat, but most of my good friends became good friends when we played ball together.

I have one friend who we call excluisvely by last name. Everyone else gets the first name treatment.

This sentence is beautiful. Really, just perfect. Like poetry.

Yes, I'm quite serious.
