OT: A funny scam and an even funnier read
http://static.circa1984.com/the-big-scam.html
This is a long page but it left me in stitches. It has to do with a guy playing a game called EVE online (apparently it is one of the pay-per-month multiplayer games) and how he started with nothing and pulled a great scam. It took me about 30 minutes to read but I laughed out loud many times.

I used to wonder what possessed people like HM (and now Chubby) to get so uptight about their existence on a stupid messageboard. After reading that, though, it puts "reality" into proper perspective. Those people make the most die-hard text-sim grognards look like slack-jawed arcade fanboys.

This kind of stuff is just such great reading for work.
If somebody could post a link like that every day, I'd be, well, quite delighted.

I guess in the end he really understood what a jackass he was. Since I played Everquest for years, I can kind of understand where his original "loaner" friend is coming from. I mean, you have fun with a game, invest so much time in it only to be screwed by a jackass like Nightfreeze.
With online games like Eve, the game is only as strong as it's weakest member (a guy like Nightfreeze and the various "pirates" who killed him for fun). For the IHOF members, wouldn't the experience be ruined if there was continually one owner who threw the games and tried everything in his power to make the game as joyless as possible? Sure, you have the option of throwing that person out of the league. Online MMORGers don't have that luxury. |

True enough. I would have been ticked off by the developers folding to the wishes of the pirates, too, though. Although it's quite obvious that ripping off other people that hated that set of jackasses only made him just as bad and probably worse than the jackasses.

Yeah the only guy I felt bad for was HardHead. I found the funniest thing was the extent that some of these guys went over fake money.. I mean calling the house.. holding a meeting... then the one guy claimed to be a phone hacker and of course the phone he will mess with is a waste of time.
The ending was just sweetness.

This story was originally posted on the somethingawful.com message board. The poster would post one chapter at a time and a lot of users were basically begging for him to finish the story ASAP. In that thread, several other people posted (much shorter) stories of scams they pulled off in other MMORPGs. Good stuff.

Personally I don't condone scamming someone in a MMORPG, because of that fact that the items in the games are worth real money most the time and it's a grey area. I mean if it's something you wouldn't do in real life (scam wise) you really shouldn't be doing it in a game, and it can get you banned.
