Grisham: Bleachers

I have just seen a new book by Mr. Grisham called Bleachers. It’s supposed to be about football!! I have enjoyed some of his other books, but am getting at bit tired of the lawyer theme.

Has anyone read this book?

I've noticed it as well and thought about getting it but would like some reviews or feedback before I do.

I read it in 90 minutes on a flight to New York about a month ago.

It is a good book, not great. Very short, but his writing skills are thus that his character develoment is always first rate. I don't think you can go wrong with it.

Same sentiments as Senator. Well written, enjoyable book...just so short.

I heard a radio interview of Grisham on our local sportsradio station a few weeks ago. Apparently he was something of a jock in high school, and his dream was to play right field for the St. Louis Cardinals. He's a huge football fan. He has a son at the University of Virginia (who plays baseball, IIRC), and attends all of their games.

Seemed like a cool guy, based on the interview. Just living a dream life.

I had the opportunity to meet him back in high school, after "The Firm" came out, but before it topped the bestseller list. He struck me then as a guy who recognized that he was a very fortunate fellow. Nice guy, very helpful to a classroom of young writers. And of course I now have an autographed first edition of "The Firm" (not that it would be worth that much. We're not talking about Hemingway here).

So we'll know who and where to trace it back to if the word "asshat" appears in a Grisham novel at some point?

just started reading it last night - very good.

I have read all of his novels, and for thsoe sick of the lawyer theme you have to pick up "Painted House" - a great book IMO very similar in style and subject to "to kill a mockingbird" which has always been a favorite.

Grisham is from the same high school I am from.

Yes, he played QB for Southaven. He was pretty good from what I hear.

Grisham's last novel, A Painted House, was, perhaps, his best. I just received Bleachers as a gift yesterday and am looking forward to this one. Now that he has gotten away from the legal theme, it appears we have seen his real writing talents.

I read Bleachers a week ago, its the best non-lawyer book hes written in my opinion. Characters come across strong and vivid personalities. The story moves well if not predictable. Its about 190 pages in hardcover form. very short indeed when compared to his other novels.
