Yay Laptop BSOD

So first I get Bad Pool Caller, which makes me nervous as I'm reading things on teh Internets.

Then I try some things, like System Restore, to see if that works.

Nothing.

Last time I get the BSOD, physical memory thing goes to 45 (I'm assuming %) and then it says Physical Memory Dump Complete. Physical Memory FAILED.

So I'm guessing this means my RAM went bad?

dola,

if it -is- my RAM (the physical memory thing happened while it went to load up in Safe Mode), is there any hope of saving the laptop?

If its just your RAM, then yeah, easy save. Its real easy to take memory out of laptops, and $50 or so will get you replacements. Now, that error could mean the memory controller is bad, and thats on the motherboard, and that would be BAD.

Good to know, thanks.

Because I'd lose all the save games for my various dynasties if it went completely out.

Not true. As long as the hard drive is ok you could still recover your data. Just not from the existing laptop if the MB is bad. You could use a 2.5" hard drive adapter to connect to an IDE connector on a desktop 'puter, or through an external USB enclosure for laptop drives.

If the hard drive is bad, your data is gone. If anything else is bad, your data is still there since it's stored on the hard drive. You'll just get to learn how to slave out your hard drive and how to recover files

first thing I always do on a BSOD is a hard drive test.. but yes, it sounds like you have a bad memory dimm.

If your HD tests out fine and you have 2 dimms, try booting with one only, if it bsod's try booting with the other one only.. that should tell you which one is bad.. if you only have one memory dimm, well just replace that one (again assuming your HD tests good)
