Georgia 14U Long Course Championships – RESULTS – Day 1

Bailey

800 Free : 10.46.84 – Seeded 17/31 – Day 1 – As expected Bailey’s familiarity with this event enabled her to understand the impact of this race, and enabled her to dig a bit deeper and improve her time. She ended up dropping almost 10 seconds to total a personal best 10:36.92. Despite the huge drop in time, she still finished 17…

Her splits were…

1:14.93
1:18.27
1:19.21
1:20.96
1:21.50
1:23.01
1:18.29

Bear

1500 Free : 19.26.00 – Seeded 3/14 – Day 1 – Above I explained that the seed time here was a coach entered time designed to place Bear in a faster heat for better competition. The time was determined by taking Bear’s lap speed in the 800 and calculating those times out for the full 1500 meters. The coach mentioned that this was a pretty ambitious goal, but he felt Bear was swimming well in practice and potentially capable of maintaining splits between 1:17.5 and 1:18.5.

The race started out, and as usual Bear began with a conservative opening 100…Then he settled into a pace for the next 200 that was off of the coach’s suggested pace, but he didn’t signal me to have him speed up…until he reached the 350 meter turn. His pace picked up significantly from that point…and then at the 750 turn, he told me (literally told me, as he was only about 10 feet from me at the time) to speed him up…he swimming on pace, but the coach told me, “He’s got a lot more in him…I’m going to push”…so Bear picked it up again. At about the 1250 turn, the coach told me to shake it (the signal to speed up) the rest of the way…so I did. Bear ended up swimming the following splits…

1:13.55
1:19.46
1:19.17
1:18.43
1:18.52
1:17.84
1:18.20
1:16.77
1:17.47
1:17.22
1:17.61
1:18.70
1:18.55
1:18.54
1:15.95

When it was all said and done, Bear finished with a time of 19:25.98…yes only .02 seconds off of the projected time from the 800. An unbelievable swim for Bear…good enough for the 13 year old cut…as well as a Short Course sectional cut. Unfortunately, Bear ended up finishing fourth. A boy from the heat after Bear’s swim a 19:23.01…so beat him by about 3 seconds…I wish they had been in the same heat to see if Bear’s instinct to race would have propelled him to beat this kid in a head to head scenario…
