If he can handle it academically, then I think from an athletic point this is probably the age I'd want him to get this challenge, as opposed to earlier, when it might have put it off, or at college, where the dream dying might hit harder.
He's probably going to find out if he can make it, with some grind, or if taking it past the high school level is too far a jump. Probably better to go through that inflection point before it becomes a major factor in college choice.
