April

The Philadelphia A’s had a hot start to the season and rode it to a 3 game lead in the AL with a 19-9 record. A host of teams, including the defending champion Red Sox, the Cleveland Naps and the New York Highlanders are very close behind. In the NL, the Brooklyn Dodgers lead the way with a 18-10 record, but the Cubs, Giants and Phillies are right in the mix.

May

The AL has become a free for all between four teams. Currently in first place are the Highlanders and the Naps at 32-24, but just 1 game back are both the Red Sox and the Athletics. In the NL, the Phillies have taken a 3 game lead over the Dodgers. Of note, are the 89 million dollar Giants, 7 games back and fading.

June

Three teams have kept pace in each league through this month. In the AL, the Naps and the Athletics are tied for first with 47-34 records. The Highlanders are just 1 back. The Red Sox have slipped a bit, but are still in this thing with a 43-38 record. In the NL, The Phillies hold just a 1 game lead over the Cubs, and just 2 back are the Brooklyn Dodgers.

In the All Star game, the AL retained bragging rights, winning 4-2. Frank Baker had a couple of RBI for the AL and earned MVP honors.

July

The off season moves by the Cleveland Naps have paid off so far as they move out to a 2 game lead.
The Red Sox and A’s are trailing them, while the Highlanders have now dropped to 7 back and are almost out of the picture. In the NL, 4 teams are fighting for the prize. Currently, the Cubs are at 57-50, and lead by just 1 game over three other teams, the Dodgers, Phillies, and the back from the dead Giants.

On July 19, Harry Gaspar pitched a no-hitter for the Cincinnati Reds. He struck out 7 and only walked 2 batters.

August

The off season moves of the Cleveland Naps are about to pay off in the form of a pennant. They have a 83-53 record, and are 9 games in front of their closest competitor, the Philadelphia A’s. In the NL, the last month is going to incredible. The Cubs, Reds and Giants are all tied for first place with 74-62 records.

On August 10th, Vaughn Gregg of Cleveland threw a no-hitter, walking 3 batters and striking out 5.

September 14, 1913

The A’s, winners of 9 out of 10 have amazingly cut the Naps lead to just 4 games. The Naps should still hold on, but the A’s are going to make a run at it. In the NL, the cash strapped Giants have opened up a 3 game lead over the Cubs and Reds. They need to hold on to get that extra post season revenue, as their payroll has inflated to 89 million and they have less than 1 million in the bank.

September 21, 1913

The Naps got things back together and opened up a 6 game lead, lowering their magic number to 3. The Giants maintain their 3 game lead, and have a magic number of 6. There are 8 games left in the season/

September 26, 1913

The Cleveland Naps are your AL Champions today. Meanwhile, the Cubs have cut the Giants lead down to 1 game with 4 to play.

September 27 - October 2, 1913

The Cubs and Giants are now tied for first with 3 games left.

On the 29th, the Giants win, while the Cubs lose, so the Giants have a 1 game lead with 2 to play.

On October 1st, the results are the same and the New York Giants win the NL pennant for 1913!

World Series

The Series opens in Cleveland, and the Naps take both games with ease to take a 2-0 Series lead.

The Giants take games 3 and 4 at home by identical scores of 2-1 to tie the Series up at 2 games each.

Game 5, in New York is another Giants victory, this time 5-4, and they head back to Cleveland, with the Giants having a 3-2 Series lead, but they need to win on the road now.

A 9-0 whitewashing of the Naps gives the Giants a 4-2 Series victory and the 1913 Championship, and their second title in 3 years!

Champion Review

A mid season, season ending injury to Ed Walsh weakened the Giants pitching staff, but Rube Marquard, the 4th starter had an outstanding year to pick up the slack. He went 22-12 with a 2.55 ERA. He was the only 20 game winner on the Giants staff. Nap Rucker won 18 games and had a 2.84 ERA while Byron “Duke” Houck went 17-9 with a 3.61 ERA.

Turkey Mike Donlin was the offensive star for the Giants. He led the team with a .320 batting average, was third in homeruns with 15 and drove in 73 runs. Laughing Larry Doyle led the team with 27 homeruns on the year and also led with 118 RBI. Josh Devore had a .301 BA and Fred Merkle had 17 homeruns.

League Outlook

The Champion New York Giants were able to turn a small profit last season, but their payroll has inflated to $93,000,000 due to arbitration. It would mar the league to have the champs leave their town, but MLB is keeping a close eye on things, and may suggest dumping salary in the near future to ensure financial security.

The Boston Braves showed a loss this season, but they have plenty of cash in reserves, so we are not concerned at this point.

The St. Louis Browns have again finished in last place and with the league’s smallest payroll of only 29,000,000 dollars, they are not fielding a competitive team in MLB’s eyes. It is the recommendation of MLB that this should be their final season in St. Louis. A buyer will be sought after who will be move the team and be willing to inject money into the team and make them competitive. Only an unprecedented turnaround will change this mandate.

Free Agency, of Note

The Free Agent market is devoid of any real solid hitters, but four of the best pitchers are available this off season.

The Cincinnati Reds have signed 2 time 20 game winner George Suggs to a 3 year deal.

The second star pitcher to be signed is Sleepy Bill Burns. It appears the St. Louis Browns will make a last ditch effort to save their franchise, as they signed the 34 year old star to a 5 year deal.

The Detroit Tigers have signed young 26 year old Walter Johnson to a 4 year deal. Johnson has already won 20 games three times in his still promising career. A major signing.

Even bigger though, the Cleveland Naps, falling just short of a World Championship have signed 2 time Cy Young Award winner Christy Mathewson to a 5 year, 50 million dollar deal. Can this be the signing that puts them over the top next year?

Amateur Draft

The St. Louis Browns hold the #1 pick, and with that they select a young 19 year old man who decided to enter the draft as a left fielder, Babe Ruth.

Here is how the entire first round played out:

St. Louis (A) pick: LF Babe Ruth
Chicago (A) pick: P Dan Sherman
Pittsburgh pick: P Katsy Keifer
Boston (N) pick: P Dan Marion
Washington pick: P Guy Morton

Chicago (N) pick: P Max Fiske
New York (N) pick: P John Mcgraw
