2002 POSITION REPORT: Starting Pitchers

27-year-old lefty Samuel Figueroa(8/7/9) is the ace of the returning starters. He went 13-12 with a 3.67 ERA last year. This will be his third major league season. Elliot Feder (7/6/7/), has been a solid inning-eater in his career, and appears to still be such a guy. Willie "The Fireball" Prahl (Good/Avg/Avg) (7/7/5) gave us 179 innings with a 5.01 ERA as a rookie last year. This 25-year-old could now be ready to become a solid piece of the rotation. 24-year-old Hipolito “The Terminator” Dominguez (Good/Good/Good) (7/6/6), the #41 prospect in baseball, looks like he’s ready. He went 15-3 with a 4.13 ERA in AAA last year. 32-year-old William Braziel (6/6/6) has been very good in seven seasons at AAA, but has struggled when he’s been called up to the bigs at times (6.49 ERA in 349.1 innings).

The SP prospect still looks pretty decent. SP/RP Dean Sipe (Good/Good/Brl) (5/6/7) advanced rapidly and suddenly last year. He started the year in A-ball, where we was utterly dominant, going 4-0 with a 1.10 ERA in 5 starts. He started 14 games in AA, going 9-2 with a 1.61 ERA. By the end of the year, he had gotten 5 starts in AA, with a 4.10 ERA. He’s now the #46 prospect in the game, and will start the year in AAA. William Bent (Good/Avg/Good) (3/2/6) continues to progress. In his first year at AA, he went 14-8 with a 3.79 ERA. This 21-year-old is a 4-star prospect. A 3 1/2 –star SP is Jim Decker (Avg/Avg/Good) (1/3/4). Decker had a tough half-year at AA, going 3-6 with a 6.55 ERA.

OVERALL THOUGHTS: The rotation could be decent as is, but could really benefit from having a bona-fide ace. I’d love to put a rotation of ACE-Figueroa-Feder-Prahl-Dominguez out there, with Braziel and Sipe waiting in the wings in case of injury/poor performance.
