April

The Boston Red Sox jump out to a small 1 game lead in April, in the AL. They hold a 18-10 record. The Senators are just 1 back at 17-11. In the NL, the Cubs are on fire with a 23-5 record in April to open up a 6 game lead over the preseason favored Giants, who stand at 17-11.

May

The Boston Red Sox remain in first place with a 33-23 record, but they are joined by the Washington Senators, who have an identical record. The A’s, last years league champs are hanging around at 3 games back. In the NL, The Cubs continue to hold a 6 game lead over the defending champion Giants. The Pittsburgh Pirates are also 6 games back and tied with the Giants.

June

The Red Sox had a big month, moving out to a 6 game lead with a 48-33 record. The A’s are the closest competitor with a 42-39 record, barely over 500 on the year. The Senators, tied for 1st just a month ago are no 7 games back with the Cleveland Naps. In the NL, the Giants began to make a move, pulling to within 4 at 50-31. Still, the Cubs hold onto first place for another month with a 54-27 record.

The All-Star game saw the AL beat the NL this year and gain a measure of revenge. The final score was 2-1 and Harry Crause, the AL’s starting pitcher was named the MVP. He pitched 3 innings and allowed just 1 hit while striking out 2.

July

Boston kept the pace up and still leads the division, and their lead was cut by just 1 game. The Sox are 62-45 on the year, 5 games better than Detroit and Philadelphia. The NL was wild this month. The big story is the Pirates 15 game winning streak which propelled them into first place with a 66-41 record. The Giants also claim a piece of first with an identical record through steady, consistent play. The Cubs dropped to 62-45 and are now 4 games out of the lead after being in first since April.

August

The Red Sox are on the verge of making a World Series appearance. They finish the month at 85-51, and have a very comfortable 10 game lead over the Cleveland Naps. The Pirates have gone up just 1 game over the Giants in the NL, and this promises to be a great finish.

September 9, 1912

Bobby Keefe of the Cincinnati Reds throws a no-hitter. He shit down the St. Louis Cardinal bats allowing just 3 walks and striking out 6 on the day. It is a good finish to a miserable season for Keefe and the Cardinals. Keefe will finish with at least 23 losses and the Cardinals will once again be drafting first, in all likelihood.

September 16, 1912

The Boston Red Sox clinch the league title! The Giants take over 1st place by 1 game over Chicago and 2 over Pittsburgh on this same day.

October 1, 1912

To begin the day, the Cubs and Pirates are tied for the division lead. The Giants are 1 game out. Chicago and Pittsburgh will square off in Chicago, while the Giants will play the Boston Braves. The Giants win 4-2 to keep themselves alive. The Pirates win 3-1 on the road to take a 1 game lead going into the final day of the season.

October 2, 1912

Pittsburgh will host the Philadelphia Phillies. If they win, they are in. Meanwhile, Chicago losses 1-0 to the Cardinals to eliminate themselves from contention. The Giants blow out the Braves 12-3 and will sit back and watch the Pirates game.

The Pirates take an early 2-0 lead, build it up to 6-0 and then withstand a late rally by the Phillies to win 6-3 and claim a spot in the Series!

World Series

The Red Sox are able to split the first two games of the series in Pittsburgh, so they head to Boston tied at 1. Boston is able to take 2 out of three at home, the Pirates winning the middle game, so we head back to Pittsburgh, with the Red Sox leading the Series 3-2.

In game 6, the Pirates score early and often, and take this one 8-2 to set up a dramatic game 7.

Incredibly, the game remains scoreless heading into the 9th inning. Tris Speaker leads off the top of the 9th for the Red Sox with a solo shot and the Sox are on the verge of winning. The middle of the Pirates lineup is up in the bottom of the ninth, but they cannot even manage a hit, and the Boston Red Sox are your 1912 Champions!

Champion Review

The Red Sox pitching staff was led by two horses this season. Slim “Scatter” Sallee posted a 25-14 record with a 2.67 ERA. Ray Collins posted a 25-11 record with a 2.96 ERA. Smokey Joe Wood also had a sub 3.00 ERA and won 19 games.

Cleanup hitter, Duffy Lewis had a team high 16 homeruns and a team high 108 RBI. Tris Speaker led the team with a .335 BA and had the Series winning homerun!

RF Harry Hooper had a solid year, batting .305 and hitting 11 homeruns. SS Steve Yerkes contributed to the offense with a .280 BA ad 81 RBI on the season.

League Outlook

The New York Giants lost over 3 million dollars this year and their coffers are running low. Their payroll is also at a league high $88 million as the off season begins. MLB is seriously concerned about the Giants. They share a large New York market with the Highlanders and the Dodgers, and maybe 3 teams in the general area is not a good idea at this point. The Giants will probably need to make the playoffs to keep themselves afloat, unless they are able to dump some salary in the off season.

Competitively, both St. Louis franchises again finished last in their leagues, and is starting to become a serious issue. A change of scenery for one or maybe both teams might do them good.

The league has also decided to honor 500+ game winner Cy Young by naming the Best Pitcher Award in each league after him.

Free Agency, of Note

The first big signing is by the Cleveland Naps. Wilbur “Lefty” Good inked a 3 year contract with the Naps, and will provide a very good bat in the lineup.

Day 15 saw what will turn out to be the two biggest signings of the off season. First, World Series hero Tris Speaker signed a 5 year deal to return to the Boston Red Sox. The Sox let him test the market, but were able to retain his services.

Leaving the Pirates and heading to the Cleveland Naps is the best pitcher on the market, Babe Adams. Babe was a 21 game winner last year. The Naps made 2 of the three biggest signings this off season, it will be interesting to see how it pays off after their 3rd place finish last year.

The Cardinals draft first again and selected 5 star pitcher, Reb Russell.
