2002 POSITION REPORT: Catchers

Theodore Barrett (6/6/7) is in the last year of his contract at age 34. He’s had a nice 10 years with Atlanta, but the handwriting is on the wall: 24-year-old 5-star prospect Walter McDonald (Good/Brl/Brl) is now rated 4/7/8, had a .956 OPS in AAA last year, has a stronger arm, and is the #12 prospect in all of baseball. 29-year-old Antonio Aguiar (4/5/5) has hit .262 in two seasons in the bigs as backup catcher, and will remain in that role..

OVERALL THOUGHTS: McDonald looks ready to take the next step. I’ll trade Barrett prior to the free agency period.
