They actually did give a pretty good indicator of the timeline through a couple music related clues. Yeah when I first saw that I thought that we may be in store for a date in the early 90's or something like that... but after watching last season's episodes it has to be more recent since Hurley is driving a H2, and Sayid's backstory deals with the current war in Iraq...
