Lowe made a great move here. I wish it could have been Jason Smith in the deal instead of Brewer, but oh well. Pronger is a name that will definitely help in the effort to attract top tier free agents to Edmonton.
Though really, I wouldn't be all that sad to see the Oilers tie up some money in Niedermayer. It'd give us a 1-6 set of defensemen that would be as good if not better than any in the league and a great pair of guys to help the youngsters (Bergeron and Semenov) develop. Throw in one big time forward and the team would be looking pretty complete at that point, and I'm not 100% but I think financially it wouldn't be unreasonable to add two more guys in that price range (and I think it would make more sense than trying to add a #1 and #2 center).
It won't happen that way but would our powerplay ever get a kick in the right direction adding that pair of defensemen.
