State Semi-Final: Guttenberg Pirates

Des Moines Register
1A: #8 Mar-Mac Topples #3 Guttenberg
CEDAR FALLS, IA—The Mar-Mac Spartans got an early lead against the Guttenberg Pirates, forcing Guttenberg out of their usual ball-control game. The advantage eventually gave Mar-Mac the victory, a 34-24 upset that sends the Spartans to the state championship game in their inaugural season.

The shocker came early in the first quarter, when Guttenberg fumbled a punt return on their own 7 yard line. Mar-Mac recovered, and Spartan tailback J.B. Chapman gave Mar-Mac a 7-0 lead on the next play. On the Spartans' next possession, Chapman busted a 23-yard gain, setting up QB Lincoln Ingram to throw a 2-yard TD pass, putting Mar-Mac up early, 14-0.

The scoring defecit forced Guttenberg to begin passing. This played into Mar-Mac's strengths. Defensive end Kennedy Eisenbraun pinned his ears back, recording 2 sacks and a blocked pass. Mar-Mac QB Lincoln Ingram matched Guttenberg's passing game, driving up the score—a factor in Mar-Mac's favor. Ultimately, Guttenberg couldn't play Mar-Mac's game and outscore the Spartans.

The victory sets up a 1A championship game between #8 Mar-Mac and #1 West Central.
