Mar-Mac's Mummert Helps Spartans Bury Lansing
McGREGOR, IA—The first two drives of Friday night's game between the Mar-Mac Spartans and the Lansing KeeHawks correctly predicted the direction and outcome of the game. On their first drive, Mar-Mac set up the Lansing defense with powerful running by junior tailback J.B. Chapman. Chapman carried the ball for 3 first downs, drawing Lansing's safeties up, and making them susceptible to quick-strike passing. Mar-Mac mixed up pass and run, while Lansing never seemed to guess right. Lansing looked confused as they gave up 80 yards and a touchdown pass to a wide-open Chapman.

On Lansing's answering drive, QB Martin Mayes was intercepted on his first pass. Mar-Mac LB Rondell Mummert ran the INT back for 7, and the Spartans were up a quick 14-0. Mar-Mac never looked back. Speedy Spartan freshman CB Sean Vetter blocked a punt shortly thereafter, Mummert recovered it, Chapman ran for 13 yards on 3rd and long, and the Spartans were up 21-0. Later in the game, Rondell Mummert would add another interception, his third collected turnover of the night.

By the end of the first half, Lansing was battered and bruised by Mummert and Chapman. Mummert led the Spartans in tackling, and Chapman ran for 97 yards on 12 carries. Hunter Banks added 55 yards on 11 carries.

In the second half, Lansing looked for the Spartans to grind out the lead on the ground. They guessed wrong again. Mar-Mac QB Lincoln Ingram threw 3 second-half touchdown passes to senior wideout Tom Lewis. The Spartans got revenge for Martin Mayes game the last time these two teams met, picking off the Lansing QB 4 times on their way to a 41-3 victory.
