Not really. In real life over the last few seasons, lots of good players are avaliable on a free right up until the season is starting. Four or five years ago it wouldn't have been the case, but now lower league clibs are much more financially stringent so quality is easy(er) to find on a free. Conversely, your chairman won't necessarily like you piling huge sums of cash on free transfers, but if it gets results.....
