Jets defeat Cardinals, set-up season finale with the Pats.

Hempstead, NY - The Jets victory yesterday kept the teams playoff and divisional championship hopes alive. It took the Jets the whole sixty minutes to defeat the stubborn Cardinals, 21-17.

Pennington connected with Wayne Chrebet from 8 yards out, with twenty-nine seconds left to put the Jets ahead for good. The Jets outplayed Arizona in all areas of the game, yet they almost suffered a season ending defeat. Chad Pennington had perhaps his best game of the season, completing 26 of 37 passes, for 251 yards and two touchdowns, playing behind a makeshift line. The Jets also ran the ball effectively, led by Curtis Martin, 23 carries for 83 yards. The Jets ran a ball contolled offense to deal with the rainy conditions. The held the ball for nearly thirty nine minutes and compiled 373 yards, to the Cardinals 270 yards. Despite the rain, neither team commited a turnover.

On defense the Jets were led by Sam Cowart. Cowart finished the game with 13 tackles, and shows why he deserves serious consideration for All-Pro honors this season. Cowart, playing with a broken thumb, has compiled 116 solo tackles this season, tied for second in the league. The rookie quarterback, Ben Roethlisberger made some good throws, including a 42 yard strike to veteran wideout, Keenan McCardell. The Cards other big play was running back, Michael Shipp's 35 yard run. The Cards accumulated 270 yards in total offense, if you take away those two plays they had 198 yards.

John Abraham did play the whole game despite a sprained knee, but was ineffective. He is listed as questionable for this week's game against the Patriots, and will be a game time decision. The Jets O-Line will have to provide protection for the Jets passing and running game one more week, as Fabini and Claridge remain doubtful.

The playoff scenario for the Jets is pretty simple, win in New England and you are the division champs. Lose, then the winner of the Buffalo, Miami game becomes division champs, the Patriots are the wild card, then your only chance to get in is if the Colts lose at home to Jacksonville.
