Week 1: NORTH LINN LYNX

North Iowa Times
Mar-Mac Opens New Era with a Win
MCGREGOR—The first football game for the newly reopened Mar-Mac High School gave Spartan fans plenty to cheer about. High school football hasn't been played in McGregor in over 50 years, but on Friday night the Spartans took the field in crisp blue jerseys and left the field with a 30-13 victory over visiting North Linn.

Mar-Mac QB Lincoln Ingram played a spectacular game, throwing for 243 yards and 2 touchdowns, including one to star tight end Seth Hackett. The big surprise of the game, however, was the dominant play of the Spartan defense. The Spartans held North Linn from scoring until the fourth quarter by shutting down the run and forcing big plays when the Lynx tried to pass. Spartan defensive captain (safety) Roosevelt Clements forced a pair of fumbles, and DE Kennedy Eisenbraun buried North Linn's quarterback with 2.5 sacks in the second half, nullifying any hopes for a Lynx comeback.

The impressive win was just what Spartan coach Everett Malone was hoping for: "I've been telling the boys in every practice that they have the talent to go to state; they just have to believe in themselves and work as a team. They did the latter tonight, and the win should go a long way toward the former."

While Mar-Mac faithful are crowding the River Queen to have a few drinks and share memories of this auspicious occasion, Coach Malone, however, is already hard at work preparing for next week. This win is an important first step for the Spartans, but next week's matchup versus defending state champion, the North Winn Mustangs, will test Mar-Mac and Malone's mettle.
