It was lame for the cop to ask if he had bomb making materials (is he going to say yes?). Why not ask if he had WMDs in his car? I don't think GE was calling the cop an ass for giving him the speeding ticket, just the bomb question which doesn't do any good but potentially aggrevate the person pulled over.

A friend of mine is a police officer, and the purpose of a question like this is to rattle the driver and observe his reaction. The reaction can often give them an indication of the likelihood of criminal activity.
